NEW YORK, March 29,-Tho Stock ex
ehnngo ntmo.ihere was rather oppressive
during todiy s res.lon and the. offerings to
take profits were absorbed with less fa
cility thnn on previous days .luring this
week. No better explanation of the reac
tionary tendency of the market can be
found than the. falling off In demand for
Mocks. 1 here waft some manipulation lor
the decline, which was effective inions the
ndustrlals and specialties, and which
brought out n, volume, of offerings tint
looked like the uncovering of stop-loss or
(icrp. Rut In the railroad list there was 110
Indication of forced celling. The profit
taking proceeded apparently In an orderly
manner, and any considerable recession In
prices led to 11 decline in tho volume of
offerings and n dull market. Stocks which
have gono up tho most during trie wek
were naturally most affected, notably the
transcontinental railroads and the south
ern trunk lines,
Thero wan omo Indication of porltlve
weakness In some of the granger nnd tho
coalern, the tendency In tho latter group
being due to tho rather disappointing Feb
ruary statement of net earnings for tho
Reading company. There were not lack
ing also points of strength In the railroad
lift. Tho most notable upward movement
of tho day was In stocks of railroads In
t entral Traffic territory and whnt might bo
called subsidiary Vanderbllt Hues. Cleve
land, Cincinnati, Chicago ,fe St. Louis led
the movement, nnd It was R.iared lu by
Chesapeako & Ohio, Pittsburg. Cincinnati,
Chicago & St. Ixiuls. Canada. Southern nnd
the New York, Chicago St. Loulx stocks.
The professed ground of this advanco wan
a conference of railroad officials In this
city looking to t'10 enforcement of agree
ments to maintain rates. The Atchison
stocks, lotilsvillo & Nashville, and some
other lesw consplcuoua stocks continued
strong. Aside from the desire to take
profits tho hnlt In the buying demand was
duo to apprehension over the effect of tflu
gloomy official outgivings regarding the
prospect for future dividends on the stock
of the Sugar company. A sharp break In
that stock at the opening seemed to hnvo
llttlo effect on the market, but when Its
weaknena was seen to persist sympathetic
heaviness developed elsewhere In the In
dustrial list und among the local traction
stocks.
Thero was no Indication of stiffness In
tho money market, but probably the re
laxed demand for peculatlve purposes had
something to do with this. The end of tho
moilth and the quarter Involve some prep
aration to meet dividend and Interest oh
llgallona, and this factor begot some spirit
of caution about using too freely the fa
cilities of the money market In speculation.
The subtreasury for the llrst time this
week gained 11 small amount from the
bankn und tho government Institution's
debit balance, at tho clearing house fell
to $340,G9S. as against a dally average ot
nearly ll.O00.00O heretofore this week.
This symptom attracted attention notwith
standing that the gain by the banks from
tho subtreasury for the week still nmounts
to considerably ovr J1.O00.000, Iondon con
tinued to trado actively In this market, but
with much lefs influence on sentiment than
heretofore, owing to the knowledge that tho
purchases for that account are carried to a
large extent by money borrowed In New
York.
Tho bond market continues netlvo and
for the most part strong, though there were
points of weakness In tho list. Total sales,
par value, 13.SJ6.000. United States bonds
wr unchnnged In bid quotations,
Commerclal-Advrtlr?r' lindon finan
cial cablegram says: Business wns again
smaller In tho markets hero today, there
being 11 biggish account to nrrunge and
profit-taking In many directions. The tone
of the market was fairly good, though not
strong. It was ll.htly affected by rumor
ot trouble between Russia and Japan over
Corea. Americans were decidedly less ac
tive. They started very sanguine, i, point
nbovo parities. I.oulsvllle & Nashville was
utronglv bought. "Much profit-taking, how
ever, catmed fagging. New York came as
a buyer of Chesapeake & Ohio, but a seller
ot others and the close was dull. In the
street dealings were quieter than for a
week. Ixindon profesnlonals who nre rather
loaded are disappointed at New York's
prollt-taklng, which nffonls them 10
chance, but they arc not expecting more
than a. tempornry reaction. Paris Is still
buying tlntos. New York Anacondas. A
fresh campaign has opened In L'tnhs, Hos
tons nnd Avlno, which have been asleep
for month!'. The bank bought JJ3O.O00 gold
In bars nnd lost 10.000 for Arsentlna.
Thero wan a very strung demand for money
for t'd" big settlement nnd requirements to
end tho quarter. All loans due at tlio
bank were renewed and there was a very
largo fresh borrowing for tho week. Bills

market was a-tlve at the advance nnd the
Pens were soon cleared. The genernl run of
hogs sold very largely at J5.1Mitj.l7'4 as

Tho hogs today sold 2M?30? higher thnn

CATTLE Receipts today numbered about 1
wi cars, wnicn was not bad for the middle
of the week, considering the bad condi
tion of U10 country roads. The demand,
however, was very good and at the same
tlmo reports from other market points
were most favorable, so that the market at
this point scored a sharp advance.
Delrnblo kinds of cornfod cattle were
generally strong to 10c higher, with com
mon and cos n) kinds at least strong.
For tho week It Is safe to say that handy
weight cattle, such as packers seem to
want, are 20c hlffher. Coarse, heavy cattlo
are probably about 10c higher for the week.
The market wu active at the advance nnd
the offerings were all taken In a very
short time, so that everything wns sold
and weighed up at a very early hour.
Cows and heifers' were especially In good
demand nnd the desirable kinds met with
ready sale nt prices that showed Just about
tho .same advance as beef steers, or 20o
