THE OMAHA DAILY BEE: SUNDAY, MATiCIl 25, 11)00. 21 CONDITION OF OMAHA'S TRADE Good, Strong, Actfvo Market in Practically All Lines. GOODS MOVE FREELY RETAIL WAY Prospects for Future Slum Flnltcrliig .In All Deportment of .Mcroliiiu Ulxlnu llveryoiie l.nyliiK In I'mistinlly I, urge Stocks. Local Jobbers In nil lines report nnothcr nveck of good, -active trade. The warmer weather had n. tendency to cause sprint; goods to tnovo more freely and In some cases orders came In bo rapidly that Jobbers found it dimcult to till them all promptly. Hoteliers who enmo In last week looking for stocks spoke encouragingly of the pros pects for sprint; and summer trade and many of them tiro counting on doing more business this year than ever before. As a result orders on the average are more liberal than they havo been In a good many years. One reason. doubtless, for the honvy buying is tho confidence that Is felt every where that present prices are to bo main tained for some tlmo to enmo and may oven go higher. It Is a well known fact that local Jobbers arc offering many lines on tho market at lower figures than they can he implicated for and that when pres ent stocks are exhausted prices will have to too advanced. Tho tendency, for that reason, Is for retailers to buy early and to figure well Into tho future. Tho 'wholesalo markets as n wholo are rot much different from what they were a week ago, no very radical changes having taken place. The feeling, however, Is Just as Irm as over and the general situation may be sized up ty saying that there Is a good, strong, active market on practically nil linen, Iocal tradn In a retail way was also very satisfactory last week, as tho leading stores were well tilled with customers looking for fprlng goods. Uvcry one seems to be figur ing on doing nn unusually heavy business this spring and so far their expectations havo been fully realized. Little ClimiKc In Orneerle. Trade with wholesale grocers was again very heavy last week for this time of year. Tho demand seems lo bo coming from all sources tributary to this market und all Indications seem to be favorable for a con tinuance of present conditions. Tho mar ket Is In nbotit the same position It was In r week ago, though a few fluctuations should bo mentioned. The sugar market Is quoted tho same as It was a week ago. though raws nre in a very strong position, End Indications are also favorable for higher prices on the refined grades. Tliero is little, K any. change In canned goods, though several lines of fruits and vegetables aro f.'V? Hl ivct7 . ".rm Price. In dried fruits California dried apricots are said to be scarce and fpr that .reason the market Is quoted Ufilc higher than It was a week ago. paster dried blackberries, on account of light supply, havo been advanced during the last week. Evaporated apples, on the con trary, owing to light consumption during the winter, have cased off a trifle and are now quoted Vi4c lower than they wero at last report. Corn syrups have been ad vanced again because of tho high price of corn and nlso owing to tho Increased cost of cooperage. The bean market is firm nnd sorno holders aro said to be asking 35c inoro than they would havo been willing to accept a wok ago. Tho coffee market Is unchanged. tetlvc llnrtltvnrp .Market. llardwnro Jobhers found trade conditions somewhat better last week than tho pre ceding, week, owing partly to the Improve ment In weather. Spring goods are now moving quito freely, and as soon as form ers start In with their Held work In earn est ti still greater demand will bo experi enced. Retailers nro anticipating this In crease in trade, and nre buying freely bo us to bo well stocked up before the rush sets In. Tho market Is in practically the same position as It was a week ago, with prospects favorable for its remaining un changed for tho present. It Is reported that pome heavy Jobbers In some of tho larger cities tested tho strength of tho mnrket on wire and nails last week and found that It was too strong for them to break, which B001 Indication that present prices will bo fully maintained on these lines for nomo time to come. There Is still consid erable shortngo In supplies, but at the namo time It begins to look as though manufacturers wero getting into .better Hhapo. In speaking of market conditions a local Jobber said that a representative of an eastern manufacturer called on him last week nnd announced that nn order placed about a year and a half ago would Hhprtly bo tilled. For that reason thnt par tlculor Jobber lias strong hopes of being 1 iiuiu iu kci picmy oi goons in tho near i future. ShnrtiiKe In Dry Clouds. Dry goods Jobbers ore also doing n rush ing business, nnd In fact nro shipping out Roods about as fast ns they can get them in. It Is still nlmost Impossible to get cortnln lines at any price, nnd wero It Jiot for tho fnct that local dealers stocked tip heavily early In tho season they would uui ue nuio 10 nn ineir orders. Local jobbers do not venture to express an opinion re garding tho now prlco list, ns they have Vry little to baso an opinion on. In re irnrtl to the outlook for business, about nil that can be bald is that with nroner weather conditions there is nnnarentlv no reason why rubber goods should not move freely. A traveling man who has Just returned from nn extended trip said that ho found rotnllers In excollent ahaoo and they .all seemed to be llgurlng on doing nn unusually large business this spring, In the. west he found tho prospects for fall business very (Uttering, and tho tulk about po much winter goods being carried over largol exaggerated. In most cases whore largq stocks .are being held over he' found that the dealers n year ago had doubled up on thslr orders of the preceding year In anticipation of n big demand for rubber goods. If last winter had been like the preceding one they would have come nut nil right, but ns It was they found they had too much stock on hand, Retailers, however, who bought conservatively, nre not doing any complnlnlng. NEW YORK, March 21,-Evldently Wall street attaches Importance at this tlmo to tho uttltude of Iondon toward tho local securities market, for when It wns seen from morning cublo dispatches that Lon don had reversed Its attltudo of yesterday and had begun to buy American securities tho disposition manifest here yesterday to sell out and take profits wns completely altered, Tho buying for London account was supplemented by a rush to buy by ull classes. London s Influence was shown In the Icad- nnd Denver & Rio Grande stocks were most conspicuous. Baltimore & Ohio rose In the Into dealings an extreme 3?s and retained Its conspicuous placo In the market through out. Pennsylvania. Transactions of a thou sand shares and upwnrd were frequent all through the railroad list und blocks of 5,000 shares changod hands In Atchison common and Southern Pacific. The Pnclllcs, espe cially Atchison and some of tho southern and southwestern group, were very heavily denlt In all day. Tho grangers were less active, but tho group wns strong. Thero was some ten dency to reaction In the local tractions and tho Iron nnd steel stocks were quiet. Othot wlse there was no Important exception to tho gcnerul nctlvity and strength of the list. The demand during the latter half of tho woek was of liberal proportions on the part j l lui tu inknci o H4iu Liu iiciiuh 1Ji iiii. market was quite good, with the movement fairly active, Good kinds of cornfed cows nnd heifers showed Just nbout the same Improvement as fat steers that is, 1015o for the week. At the same time the medium kinds of cows were safely 15326c higher. Common kinds of ennners wero fully 25c lower for tho week, but thero are not many coming Just at present, so that tho decline docs not cut so much figure. The senson Is getting n little late for heavy bulls and they were rather slow all the week and the market did not show any Improvement. In fact It could not be quoted more than stendy. Light weight fat bulls wore In s. little better demand and for that reason they sold to better advantage. Stock bulls. If cnolce, seem to be In pretty fair demand, but ns n matter of course the num ber coming forward at this time Is small. Stockers and feeders have not shown much change this week. The market has been Just about steady from day to day. The scarcity of corn in somo sections has been tho cause of the canceling of a good many orders for half-fat cattle to be finished In the country.
