Deiiioriillrnllon In liiihiKlrlnlx In Cnn- triiHt o Hnllronil Sdirkn , NEW YORK. Dee. G.-Tho tone of the market for Industrial securities showed a" decided contrast today to that of railroad securities. The break In prices of the Industrials approached de moralization by the middle period of the afternoon. Meantime the rnlltoail slocks almost without exception held tenncloinly to their prices. Late In the day the bears begun to cover and wrought some very marked recoveries In the Industrial II1. 1. At the Rime time- the railroads , which had been almost stagnant , displayed some signs of animation nnd rose generally above yo- terdny's level. Net gains In a few railroads reached n polnl. The late recovery In stocks was coinci dent with an easing In the call money rate to 3 per cent , after ruling from 7 to S per cent earlier In the day. The banks were calling loans and the movement of the In dustrials suggested thnt they were In dis favor , not only with -pectilatlvc public , but with the money lenders. Industrial col lateral apparently being displaced to a greater extent than other classes. The bpiirs were very active and made bold onslaught on the Industrial list. , uncover ing Ftonloss orders on a large scale. The casing of the money rate aroused the supposition that the banks had strength ened their position to a satisfactory extent , promising some relief from the calling of loans. As It was evident that the short In terest had been largely extended the room traders turned to the bull side on the gen eral theory that the three days' decline In prices had reached far enough. They had some siiccoHIn forcing the shorts to cover nnd the demand from that source became rather urgent. Quite a number of the industrials showed declines of 3 % to 7 points and the subse quent rally brought them up from 1 % to 3 points. Sugar was decidedly erratic , ow ing to the sitting of the directors to net on the dividend. After an early advance there was decided weakliest- and only a momentary check to the fall , when the regular dividends were announced. It fell nff afterward to 1496i and after rallying over 3 points eased off again , closing with it not gain of a small fraction. Tne in crease In the dividend rate on Atchlson pre ferred , though not entirely unexpected , had i strngthenlng Influence on the ra Iroad list. Some strencth was Imparted to the International - i national stocks by the support accorded In I the. American department of the London i market. Continued large shipments of currency - j rency to the south and a loss ot over $1,000- , > 00 by the banks to the subtreasury on ye.s- tcrday's subtreasury operations are re ported. Sterling exchange continued firm today. There was little doing In railroad bond : and prices held about steady. Total sale * par value , $1,130,000. United States new 4s nnd old 4s advanced , fc In the bid price. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says : The murketf here were rather busier today , mainly In mines , and the. tone was more cheerful , assiitcd by an unconfirmed rumor of a de cisive engagement at the Tugela. It was said that the Boers had retreated on Lady , smith. Americans opened well abovn parity , London regarding hopefully President Me- KInley's mention of the currency at all In nls message nnd reading the trust para graph as merely taking the wind out of the democrats' falls. They remained firm and closed at the best. Spanish 4s were 67.75 ; tlntos , 46'4 : Anacondas , 9. Money was easier. Few bills were offered. The Bank brought In 14,000 gold in French coin. The week's influx was 44,000. It Is rumored that Russia may supply gold. COTTON A pharp break in the Liverpool cotton market sut'- , ftced to bring Uie Investment Into the real- I Izatlon of largo amounts of January , May and July cotton , which In turn led to a similar movement on the part of the local longs. As for the situation In general. there were practically no cnanges to war rant any radical alteration in the policy of either side. The market opened weak at u decline of 45iS points nnd continued to fall ; rapidly during the first half hour under . very heavy general liquidation , felling for foreign account and something like organ ized effort on the part of the bear crowd to dislodge long stuff. Iirger receipts than predicted were used by opponents of the market as ammunition , as were the cables ; later , however , the market slowly steadied on profit-taking by room Phorts and pur chases for several staunch houses. The out side public displayed great timidity and re fused to confidently take hold again , pend ing the receipt of tomorrow's cables. The public ndvlccp failed to corroborate early private reports to the effect that spot cot ton in the south was weak and offered at lower prices. Private cables attributed Liv- 1 crpool's sudden fall to a loss of confidence In that market on the part of the outside public , which had been Influenced by report ? from this side that the south was weaken ing. Selling orders from New Yor-- aided In depressing the English market. The ( close was steady at a net lotw of liiS points. LIVERPOOL. Dec. G. There were not enough fat cattle on sale to make a test of the market , only four or live frePh loads of any consequence being reported on sale. With such moderate offer ings there was not much enthusiasm among Ibuyers. It Is safe , however , to say that good , well fattened beeves would have brought Bteady price ? . On the other band , the feeling on anything else but the right srood kinds was weak. Shippers must bear in mind that ths ! Is the season of the year when packers want a few good cattle for Christmas beef , but do not care for many common cattle and hence ure- ° very apt to discriminate against them. The prize cattle here yesterday were not sold In time for the evening paper and are reported below under the head of "J ate Yesterday. " Some pretty good cows nnd heifers , which Just happened to please some buyer , sold early thlp morning nt good , steady to strong prices , but the general market on cow stuff was slow and a little easier. Good feeders were in demand nnd as they were scarce the market was strong. Home very cnolce yearlings. DiacK polled , brought $5.00. Everything that was at all good sold readily.
