NEW YORK , Oct. IS. The stock market showed a firm undertone all day nnd ended with a vigorous upward movement In progress In A number of prominent stoftka , which arrested n reactionary lendency and mada Ihe closing firm. Net gains exceed a point In only a few coses. The principal activity wnn In thn prominent specialties. Brooklyn Transit continued to ultrnct a large share ot attention. There -were renewed - newed efforts to depress the stock , but the support was too strong. Supflr and To bacco , the latter Felling ox-dlvldend , rose at one tlmr > 3 points each , but did not save all their gain. Great Northern preferred nnd Pullman continued their recent show of slrongth. the former rising SU nnd 5 4 net. Pullmans extreme rise was o'i nnd Its net gain 2. Metropolitan Gns nnd Third Ave nue were strong , but the latter lost all of Its gain. Southern Paclllc was the lender of the late rally , after falling to 36 , and was marked up vigorously to 37 % . St. Paul at tained a net advance of a point. The Baltl- moru & Ohio stocks were slrong. London's active dealings here werft very small , but the liminesfi of stocks there and the lower rate for money In London had a sentimental Influence here. So had the good showing made by the Bank of Ger many. The rise in the private discount rate In Berlin suggested , however , that the bank's recuperation was made fit the expense of the open market. The decline In discounts In Ijondon wan reflected In nn carter tone for sterling exchange rates. But higher money rates are expected n London and Ihnt expectation Is a factor In the speculative outlook here. Money rates here continued rather easier , call loans rul ing nt 6 per cent or below. There was less demand for call loans. The amount of money disbursed by thc stibtreasury on Interest account today , ac cording to preliminary estimates , did not exceed $200,000. This Included not only the anticipated Interest ot November 1 nnd for the fiscal year , .but nl o a considerable mini ot overdue Interest. This factor was there fore not a large one In the easier tone of the local money market. The subtreasury , howe-vcr , had a debit balance of over $1,000- 000 at the clearing house on account of payment of government obligations. r > .o drain Is apparent llius far from Iho banks Into Ihe suhtreasury on account of routine operations this woe' * . Deposits at the. sub- Ircaniry for telegraphic transfers to other points show tli.it the Interior demand for money Is not yet satisfied. The bond market continued moderately active and some of the southwestern issues moved upward. Total sales , par value. $1,775,000. As It was the situation was dtf- cldedly against Ihe seller. In that Chicago was reported as 510c lower , very dull nnd some hogs left over. With that condition of affnlis prevailing In the Chicago market it was not surprising that buyers nt this point wanted to take oft something nnd that they had their way about it.
