The slacking u hns checked the advance In price * , hut most dealer * think It Is only for a short time. Attention Is directed to thn fact that prices hero arc below those prevailing In the west nnd nl.on abroad , nnd this serves to make the maintenance of prices general and the pre. sure to nell slight. London auctions have doped somewhat quieter and with an easier disposition apparent on some grades , tut yet with a general advance and a con siderable one over opening prices. MOVBMH.VTS OI * STOCKS AMI I1ONDS. llrooklju Transit Prrelpllnlo * n llenr Ileaotton In ( ho Mnt , NEW YORK , Oct. 13. The temper of speculation was determinedly bearish today | and favorable Incidents were persistently Ignored. The reactionary spirit found Its chief vent by selling Brooklyn Transit. That stock was easily the leader of the market In point of activity nnd although the dealings did not approach the high water mark of n few weeks ngo the unsup ported condition of the stock and the largo mocks offered suggested a resumption of 1ntft conditions. Metropolitan Street Rail way seemed to show acute sympathy. Man hattan wns little affected and thu New York Gns stocks were firm. There were some wide movements In stocks not usually prominent. New Ycrk Air Brake fell 9 points nnd the Flower grout ) ns a whole , except Rock Island , was weak in sympathy with Brooklyn Transit. Offerings of Sugar and Tobacco were greater than could be ab sorbed and both stocks declined sharp.y. The American Mulling storks also were de pressed , the common los'.ng 2V4 and pre ferred 7 , The Industrials were more affected thnn the railways. Lacledo Gas rose con spicuously 4 points and Great Northern preferred over a point. The market sfemea rather ilrm for a time , during the morning , but a persistent weakness of Brooklyn Transit broke through the resistance. Call loans were easier agnln , the maxi mum rate not exceeding 3Vi per cent. And the majority of the day's ' loans being made at fi per cent or below. Preliminary cstl- mntfij ? of the week's movements of money Klvc prospect of a slightly Improved condi tion In tomorrow's hnnU statement. The disbursements of cash by the suhtreasury on account of government payments have almost offset its receipts on account of revenues. But the banks have deposited nt the subtrcasiiry for telegraphic transfer lethe the interior $1,052,000. The heavy outward movement early In the week has been partly offset by largo receipts later In the week. This would Indicate a loss on the In terior movement of about $2EOO.OuO. Against this there have been receipts of $2SOO.ono of foreign gold and about $750,000 by cashing of drafts of the San Francisco mint on the snbtrp-nsury. malkng a. total of about $3taO- 000. This would Indicate a net gain to the cash reserves of Ihe bank of over $ lflOJC < M. The banks further reduced their loans , FO that there Is a fair prospect of a moderate Incrense In the surplus reserves. 1 ho llrst payment of anticipated Interest on govern ment bomls will bcv mndo on Monday , but the prospects do not Indlcnte that nppllcn- tlon will bomade on a large svale , although this payment 1s without rebate. The bond market was moderately active. Tint price change. ? were mixed. Total sales , par value , $1,765,000. They opened Irregular , but soon Improved quietly up to the close. African mines were buoyant. Portuguese 3s were again hard. Spanish 4a were GO' ! , . Rio Tlntos 4S and Anacondas a shade under 10. American se curities began dull and remained listless to the. close , which wns slack. The Cape took 303,000 gold and South America 120,000. Meanwhile the bank bought gold to the amount of 183,000 , as follows : Ninety thousand pounds In bars. 75,000 in German coin and 18.000 in French coin. The loss to the Cape was less than had been expected. Ihe. market having counted on an engage ment of 600.000. It Is expected that the Capo will take -half - a million sterling a week during the war. A considerable proportion of the receipts consisted of common feed ers or stock cattle , not many killing cattle being included amonff thu receipts. Cornfed steers were in good demand and the market was without material change , values being Just about steady. There was nothing : very choice among the offer ings to put a top on the market , HO that the sales given below do not look very high. There were no grass beef cattle in the yards , at least none of any Importance , to make a test of the market. The feelinc. however , was steady on all kinds. Cows and heifers were in moderate sup ply and the quality common. The market was slow but without material change since yesterday. The same was true of bul s and all kinds of butchers' stock. Choice heavy or fancy feeders would sell all rleht , but aside from that the market was very slow and weak for the very good reason that It la near the close of the week and speculators already have quite a good many cattle on hand. No one seemed to want the common feeding and stock cattle , and It wns slow work getting rid of them even by taking off SfJlOc from yesterday's prices. Representative sales : BEEP STOSEltS. No. Av.
