The Board of County Supervisors at Its morning session yesterday took up again the matter of an appropriation toward the expenses attendant on the reception to the Fifty-first Iowa. The motion to approprl- ate $1,000 was once put to a vote , but was defeated , Supervisor John Matthews ilone voting for It. Matthews explained his vote by Baying that ho voted for the appro- prlatlon In the Interest of patriotism and public policy. It transpired during the discussion of the question that some of the members of the board were under the Impression when they voted for the appropriation Tuesday that the I city council would appropriate a like sum. i AVhen they learned that the city had no I funds In the treasury from which It could possibly draw such an amount , they decided to rescind their action. Chairman Brandca elated he waa willing to contribute out of I his own pocket $25 and was euro that ho could oecurc at least $200 from the people In his part of the county. Some of tbo members referred to the fact that at the democratic county convention a resolution had been adopted criticising tbo action of the board In making an ap propriation for the Pottawattamle Wigwam at the TraiiemlsslEclppI Exposition and sup posed that If they made an appropriation for the reception to the Fifty-first they would bo condemned , One or two of the members entrenched themselves behind the question of the legality of such an appropriation. Ernest Hart , chairman of the reception finance committee , was regretting yesterday that he did not draw the warrant Immedi ately after the appropriation was made Tuesday nnd before the board had tlmo to . rescind Its action. Clark seeks to recover $40,000 from her half brother , A. A. Clark , as damages for alleged assault and battery was commenced In the federal court yesterday afternoon before a Jury and Judge AA'oolson. The Jury which had been empaneled last Saturday had , ow ing to the death of J. H. Higgles , one of the members , to bo rclrapaneled. Miss Clark alleges that her brother choaked her one day during a family dispute. The trial of the personal Injury damage suit of Henry Geescn against James Saguln occupied nil of yesterday In the. dls- tiff's evidence the defense moved that the case bo taken from the- jury and a verdict returned for the defendant. The motion was overruled by the court , but at the conclusion of the testimony for the defendant the motion was renewed.
