J27d6tM IntrrrMlltiK I'l'iiornn llrtelly and In * ntriictlvcl ) ' DpNorllicil , The manufacture of wall paper Is singu larly Interesting , reports the Pulladrlphli Times. First , ft web of blank paper Is set In a reel behind a blotching machine ; two cylinders bring the free end ut the paper Into the machine , where a roller workluc In a color pan puts a large quantity of color upon the paper In blotches. Then a sot of flat brushes , called Jiggers , brush quickly back and forth , thug Bpreadlng the coloring mat ter evenly over the surface of the paper. As the paper comes from the blotching machine \\orkmrm lakes ono end of It , wr.ips It around n stick and places the slick across two parallel endless chains , and tin paper Is thus carried tia an Incline. Whcu eighteen feet of It lias run out the chains take UP another stick that lies across thorn and carry It up as they did the first stick ; a third etlck soon follows the second , nnd thus the work continues until the entire web of paper has been run out of the blotching machine. The chains , in their working , hang th paper In loops over a system of steam pipes , and It Is thus thoroughly dried before U reaches the end of the chalnwork. where It Is again wound Into web form. Wall nnrior designs are first sketched on paper and then transferred to rollers of thn size required. It Is necessary to prepare as many rollers as there arc colors In the design - sign ; thus , If the design requires printing In eight colors , eight rollers must be pre pared. When all of the rollers are ready ttie artist directs his workmen and each one Is given a color. A workman to whom that color has been given takes a roller to his bench , sots It firmly In the grasp of a vise , and , with hammers , files , brass , ribbons nnd brass rods , EOCS to work. Every hit of tha design that Is to bo In sieoa Is traced out for him and ho carefully reproduces It In relief on the roller. When his work Is finished , the roller bean on Its face , In raised brass , green stems , leaves , etc. , and at the proper time nnd place > vlll put the green coloring and Rh.idlng Just where the designer Intended It should be. In 111(0 manner the other rollers nro made ready for use , and they arc then taken to n press that has a large cylinder of the width of ordinary wall paper. There are grooves around the sides and the botom of this cylin der. Into which are fitted the rods on the ends of the rollers , and , when In position , the faces of the rollers Just touch the cylin ders. An endlesM cloth band comes to each of the rollers from below , each band works lu. a color pan , which contains , In liquid form , the coloring matter to bo carried on the roller to which tbo band belongs. Each roller Is placed In such position that the part of the design upon It will strike exactly In the spot necessitated by the rela tive position of the other rollers. When all is ready the paper that has passed through the blotching machine 1 p'aced between the icyllnder and the first roller , the cylinder and the rollers revolv * rapidly , and soon the paper Is .beautifully . printed. At each of the endless cloth bands there 'Is a steel scraper called n doctor , and It Is the doctor's duty to prevent too much liquid from the other pans from getting on the rollers. Tbo waif paper press throws off ten rolls of paper n minute , nnd each roll contains sixteen yards. It Is said that stamped paper for walls was first manufactured In Holland about the year 1S55. Some of the very costly wall paper In use nowadays Is beauti fully embossed and hand painted. LIFE I.V A HOMTAHY CKl.I , . A IicNcrli | < l < > u of 3ol | < nry Co nil no- iiier ; ( . My first movement wn to approach th window , which won placed so high that I could hardly reach It with my lifted hand. It was a broad , low opening , cut In a wall five feet thick and proteted by an Iron grat ing and a double Iron window frame , relates Prince Krupotkln In the Atlantic Monthly. At a distance of a dozen yards from this window 1 saw the outer waif of the fortress , a piece of masonry of Immen.sc thickness , on the roof of which I could make out a gray sentry box. Only by looking upward could I perceive a bit of the sky , which was now faintly Illuminated by the last niys of tha sun. sun.I made a minute Inspection of the room , where I had now to spend no onn could tny how many years. From the poMtlon of the lilgh chimney of the Mint I guefncd that I was In the southwest corner of the fortrcs * , In a bastion overlooking the Neva. > 'nls room of mlno was a casemate destined for a big gun and the window was an embrasure. Sun rays might never penetrate It ; even In suminur they must be lott by the thickness of the wall. It wna eleven stepw from mm corner to the other of the room , which held an Iron bed , a little oak tab.'e and an oak stool , The floor was covered with painted felt and the walls with yellow paper. However - ever , In order to deaden the sounds the paper was not put on the wall Itself ; It was painted over canvas and behind thn canvas I discov ered a wire grating , behind which was . layer of felt. Only beyond the felt could I reach the stone wall , At tbo Inner side of the room there was a wasbstand and a thick oak door , In which I made out a locked opening to pits * the food through and a little silt , protected by glass and by a shutter from tlici outside. This was the "Judas" through which the prisoner could be spied upon at ovcry moment , Th sentrr who stood In the passage frequently lifted the little shutter and looked Inside , his boots squeaking as ho crept toward the door. I tried to speak to him. Then tha eye which I could see through the silt as sumed an expression of tenor and the shut ter was' Immediately let down , only to bo opened furtively a minute or two later.
