10 THE OMAHA DAILY BEE : WEDNESDAY , JULY COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Littla Speculative Interest on the Chicago Board of Trade Yesterday , PROVISIONS SHOW UP VERY STRONG Corn llnlcH AVcnlc on llcnvjIilqnliln - ( Init OnH U Dull , but Hc- tnnrknlily Slcnily llc- cclpti Arc I.lKlit. CHICAGO. July 18. LUtlo speculative Interest v/aa dlaplayed In the Hoard of Trnd market today outside of the provl nlon pit. Wheat declined Ho , corn Uc , oat lost a shado. Provisions advanced lOQl 1lio latter In pork. Wheat opcne < l weak at 7171tto for September , wQilch was HffHo under yester- day'n close. Fine weathsr everywhere , lower cables , and the receipts of bt/2 / cars for Minneapolis and Dnlutli , compared with Co" cars last week , and 53 a , year ago , wcro the chief Influences at work In Ihe market. With such enormouR receipts and the slilg- gl h demand for cash property , the bulls could nee no cncourag&ment for a rally In the Irmnedlata future and long wheat was thrown on the market In great quantity. September totidicd 70e Immediately after ths opening. This was put price and buy- Ins arrolnnt thoao prlvlleRcs absorbed tha bulk of offerings. Shorts covered freely on the decline and the market gradually ral lied at 71&C. On the bulge the demand I ! slackened again and September reacted to 71c. Then the 'holders ' of puts made n second end turn and this time H held until the close , which was at 71M1714c , a not loss of only > 4c. Primary receipts today were 1,120.000 bu. , compared with 427.000 bll. the corresponding < lay of last year. Local re ceipts were 142 cars , 23 of contract grade. Corn ruled weak on heavy liquidation. Loading local professionals who have sup ported the nmrkot steadily for the last three months gave up In despair and threw their lines overboard. Ixjcal receipts of 823 cars , together with extremely glowing ac counts of the new crop , which was re ported to be favored with perfect weather throughout the corn bJlt , combined to bring about the downfall of the bulls. September opened ' /itHic lower at SinjSH 32TiiC , soldi during the greater part of the session at SZHIia ic , and closed at 32ic , a not loan of Vic. Oats ruled dull but remarkably steady. September sold at the opening at 20g 20Hc , but good supporting orders were apparent at the oven Ilguro a-nd the market rallied1 to 20VMMOV4e at the close , a net loss of only l-16c. There was llttlo or no routine news outslds of moderate cash demand. Provisions showed remarkable strength throughout , In unite of \veakness In the grain markets. Continued cash demand for both domestic and export purposes stimu lated outsldo speculative buying. Added 'to this was an advance of 10@lEc for hogs at the yards. There was a slight recession early on profit-taking , .but packers bought freely on the decline and caused a rally which was still In progress at the clos-j. September pork dlosstl at $9.30 , a net gain of 15cj September ribs and September lard gained lOo each , closing : at ? G.27i6 and J5.57JS respectively. Prices drlfud quite aimlessly up and down except In a few stocks which were Infiuenced by Individual causes nnd net changes tor the most part were very small , The opening showed some slight animation and , h-gher prices In sym pathy with London , wnlch nad advanced Americans before une opening here and which seemed lo take a more cheerful view of the Keneral outlook. The money market there was reported rather i-asler in tone , but the Bank of En gland continued to do practically a-1 of the money lending1 at a rate ivell above its olll- clal minimum rate of discount and sterling exchange at continental centers showed nd- ds'tlcmal sharp "advances. " In New York money was nithcr easier in tone , but Iho rate still continued above those at some other domestic venters , so Uhat the sterling exchange market , .though hard , was not quotnbly higher. It 4s intimated that money rates may beheld held up In New York Ho prevent an outflow of gold nnd the adldt'onul suggestion Is heard that Clikog-o may supply LomUui with sonio gold on direct , movement. There nro Increasing offurlngs of Chicago funds In Now York. Statements of railroad earn ings continue to break previous records , St. Paul leading today's returns with Us second week of July Increase of $2J1,633 over last year. Today's recovery in Brooklyn Rupld Transit amounted to 2 points net and In Metropolitan Street Railway 'to 1ft. Not withstanding the favorable Incidents , the local stock market showed no dlsirositlon to follow London's tarly lead and the open- ine gains were soon lost. The only movements of any Importance were In Isolated stocks , mostly Industrials. Sugar land Manhattan showed early depres sion which was not entirely overcome In the case of the latter , thoush the former shows u. smal l net gain. American Smell- ins nose at ono time 2i and General Elec tric 1 % , but both reacted 1 point. New York Air Brake rose 6 points and then dropped 11. The tobacco stocks caimo Into late demand and gained from 1V4 to 1& , Uie latter Con- tlnontUl Tobacco common. Rubber pre ferred. Leather preferred , Tennessee Coal , rrin Plate , Federal Steiel , People's Oas and a low other stocks had parlous of strength. New York Central more than recovered yes terday's decline and some of the firmness was manifest among the grangers , Paclllcs and Trunk lines , but tks coalers , South- westerns nnd Southern stocks showed a slightly yielding disposition. The whole day s business tooted up only a little over a quarter million share * and Brooklyn Transit , Sugar and Manhattan absorbed a larte uroportlon of this. The bond market was also very dull and price changes wore small and mixed , as li stocks , , United States 3s , coupon , declined H and the old 4'J , reg-latered , Vi , while the old 4s , coupon , advanced U In the old price. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says : fine feeling rii- gardlng the Transvaal trouble being more Wopeful today , the tone ol the market was brighter , but where was no increase of bus iness. Americans were steUdy but dull Ull Now York began , buying ; Jater they eased , closing below the opening. Changes In bal ance weiro fractional and Irregular ; money Was easier and some balances were unem ployed. The bank d'ld ' a smaller discount business and only a trifling amount of loans wore repaid. The bank nought 101,444 of gold in bars and received 80,000 from Hol land. Silver closed weak en American sell- ins : . COTTON-For a tlmo this morningtha cotton market acted < is If H was about to do a uttle batter. The opening call developed a very steady feeing , with prices unclwngedt to 3 points higher. The Immediate cause o tlie Improvement was the stability shown ny the English market nB compared \v5th , what had been expected. At the same time crop news waa not of an unevenly fUvorablo quality , al- 'thbugh ' generally a till very good. The local bull contingent tried to- help the budding Improvement , but It was soon blighted by the efforts of tlje bears , who took advantage / - tago of the fadt tlmt outside orders failed to como In and they sold the little tha.t was necessUry to turn thw market back to last night's figures and dullness. For the rest of the day tlie market worked within very narrow lines and rul l featureless un til near the close , when a spurt of buying carrle'd prices rapidly upward , with the market llnnlly steady at a net gain of 304 points. There was plenty of crop news In circulation , but nothing that was really new and the situation wn. > as marked on the part of the bull contingent as It was on the part of the more bearlsnly Inclined. The afternoon phases of .the market had all the waiting- characteristics nnd was en tirely local. Communion housea had prac tically no orders from the country at large. The agricultu ral department's foreign crop report for July states that the commercial authorities esti mate the shortage of the Russian crop of wheat at from SG.000,000 to 120,000,000 , as compared with last year. The deficiency IB most serious In the rcglous most favorably situated for export. In the north unreason ably cold weather has unfavorably affected all the crops of hay , potatoes and all grains except oats. The rye crop , nn important one , is very short. The Prussian official report on wlieat Is a llttlo above "fair , " 2.3 being the technical designation. The Austrian outlook for wheat and rye Is good in all but ono province , that of Bu- kowina. Austria , 'Rou'roania and Bulgaria all slightly below , the average in wheat , rye and maize , A French estimate of the wheat crops of Spain and Italy puts it at 34,000,000 bushels below last your , tbe shortage being somewhat the heavier in Spain , The wheat crop in France Is represented as satisfactory , but the optimistic estimates made earlier in tbe season have been scaled down by later crop damages , the estimate now being 352,000,000 bushels. In Great Britain cable reports of a severe general storm presagM considerable dam age to a grain crop that otherwise would have ranked as fair. Hay is very much below tlie aveinge , The report from India shows better condi tions in Dengal and the northwest provinces ; ban for several years previous , but this Im provement does not extend to tbe Punjab. In faot salesmen were all quoting good oattlo aa steady with yesterday. Half-fat cattle , red on corn and grass , were neglected to some extent and holders of that kind as a rule were quoting the market not only alow , but a little lower as well. The mar ket as a whole was In pretty good shape and sellers were generally satisfied with the day's business. Good dry lot cows and heifers wore good sellers , but scarce , and there was no change In prices. Grass cows have been gradually working to a lower lever , though there was no material change between yesterday and today. Some western grass oows , belonging to the Bamo outfit , though a different brand from those sold yesterday nt. $3.90 , brought me same price today. Good veal calves sold at $ S.OO@G.50. There were more stock cattle than have been hero on a g-ood masy days , but the good kind seemed to be sought after at steady prices.
