CHICAGO. July 17.-lleavlness was the characteristic of the grain markets from Btart < o Ilnlsh today. Wheat declined 11,0. , corn lo nlld outs \\c. \ 1'rovlslons ruled moderately active nnd closed 2',4Q5c hlg-her , the latter for pork. Wlvat opened wenkOHc loner for Sep tember , nt 72'/i ' < a'72Hc. The opening qtlota- itlons were the highest of the dtiy. T > ho ex cellent weather for spring wheat , heavy domestic receipts nnd a dicllno ot HSld at Liverpool ftirnlshexl the bears with a sur plus of ammunition nnd they used It with Kood effect. When the visible supply re port was completed , showing nn Increase of 613,000 bu. , compared with a decrease of OVIT 2OuO,000 bu. the same week lust year , long wheat was thrown on the market re gardless of price. Primary western mar kets received 1,133,000 Uu. , compared with Soi 000 Im. n ynr ngo. The English visible Jnr-rensod fi42,000 nil. , ngalnst 112,000 bu. de- crcase last year. Atlantic clearances , wheat and flour , amounted to only 268,000 bu. Minneapolis and Duluth received 75fl cars , ngulnst 01 oars a year ago. Chicago rorelvod 109 cars , compared with fls cars lust year. This summary of figures was altogether discouraging nnd under its In- jtuence and that of the promising prospects for spring wheat the market ruled very Jicavy , September selling down to 71 ? c nnd cluslng at the bottom of the day's rang * . Corn ruled heavy , Influenced by line growing weather and liberal receipts. Several - eral local long illnes were liquidated on the decline. Cash dealers reported only 40.000 bu. oold. Local receipts were G13 caw. The visible supply decreased 323,000 bu. , ngalnst 2 Mlo.OOO bu. decrease last yrar. September opened Mj/1/-c lower at 33VSf33c , declined to ffiTMTWc ; and closed wltn sellers at 33c. Oats were weak nnd lower on favorable weather nnd sympathy with wheat and corn. Only GO.OOO bu. were sold for export. The visible supply decreased 850,000 bu. Re ceipts at Chicago wore 190 cars. The visible decrease nerved to check offerings. Sep- itombor opened sb ady fit 20'sc , sold at 20Vic , declined to 20c and closed nt 20c. Provisions were llrm , notwithstanding the weakness of cereals. Opening prices showed some Improvement , due to an ad vance of Go In hogs. The market was loaded with long stuff on the mlvnnre and most of the early advance was wined out before the close. Outside speculative de mand continued good. September pork sold between J9.12Vand $9.25 and closed Bo net higher at $9.15. NEYonK , July 17.-T.ic slock mirUct today was an aimless nnd Inslgnlllcnnt af fair , except so far as the .dullness nnd necloct were slRnlllcnnt of the doubt felt In minds over the money outlook. Opera tions were steadily confined to professional manipulation by the room traders. This kind of thlnff resulted In only trivial net ehjiiucs , most of which were on the sldo of louses , The range of prices was qttlto wide during the day , many stocks nt onetime time rlslnc a shade over biiturday and then dropping from 1 to 2 points. The latter ot the day was devoted to desultory cov ering movement , which icclalmed most of the earlier losses. liven Orooklyn Transit , which was the center ot the day's weak ness , recovered to within Ifc of Saturday's close , but yielded sharply to bear pressure In the final dealings. Labor troubles played n. largo part In the Oay'a market , Brooklyn Transit belnc most conspicuously affected by reason of the strike among Its employes. The stocks opened oft 1 % and Manhattan and Metro politan Street Rnt'.wny were keenly .af fected In sympathy , the former losing 1U and the latter 3 points. Brooklyn Transit was vigorously supported by Inside Inter ests nnd quickly rallied n point , KlvltiR the short interests , which arc supposed to bo large , small opportunity to covur. Later the stocks fell an cxtieme ZU when the news cnme that the street car strike in Cleveland had been renewed , os It wns fi'arcil tills might prpsage a general sym pathetic strike. People's Gas and Federal SteeJ , as being1 Flower specialties , were de pressed In sympathy with the Brooklyn stocks , Federal Steel dropping an extreme 1 % points. New York Air Drake also broke 11 ! points nnd after vibrating wildly scored n. full recovery. American Smelting1 moved upward on the decision cvr the Colorado supreme premo court against the constitutionality of the state/H eight-hour law , the con flicting Interpretations of which let ! to the smelters' strike. Tin Plato moved up on the wage scale agreement nnd the ndvnnco In the prlco of the product. The late weak ness of Brooklyn Transit and a break In Sugar of nearly 2 points orougth the most active selling movement of the day , when net dec'lnea reached a point In a number of cases , Including tlho grangers nnd Atchl son preferred , and In New York Central reached 1 % nolnts. The failure of the call money market to weaken In splto of Saturday's favorable bank statement caused uneasiness regard ing the future. Mo.st of the day's loans were made at 4" > per cent and the rate weakened to 2 per cent only after most of the demand had been ratlslled. Humors of tinancla ! dllllcultles In London caused doubt and hesitation In all the world's great stock markets The private discount rate there rose to 3 % per cent and demand sterling and cables * hero advanced % per CPtlt. There were very persistent rumors that pold would go from New York this week. Transactions In the local stock market for London account were , however , InslgnlH- cant. The absence of any announcement of a gold shipment by tomorrow's steamer was a factor 1n the late recovery ot the market , which brought prices genenb'ly back to near Saturday's close. The market for bonds was dull and heavy In sympathy with stocks. Total sales , par value , $1,650- 000. United States 4s advanced % and the old 4s. rcslstered , U. The offerings of cornfed beef steers consisted of only some ten or a dozen loads of cattle , the most of which changei hands early In the morning. The marke did not show much change , but could safely be cuoted steady to strong. Dry lot cows and heifers -ivere very scarce and there were hardly enough to test the market , but tlio feeling was such that It would be safe to say that had there been anything In that line of Importance It would have brought ? teady prices. There was ono bunch of twelve cars of Montana cows , the first of the season , whloh sole at $3.90. Whether that wa.fi higher or lower no one could say as there has been nothing hero like them before this season. A bund of western cows averaging 913 pounds seat \ ( at $3.35 , last week nome of the same outfit averaging 913 pounds brought $3.55 , and two weeks ago a bunch of the same cows aver aging 934 pounds brought $3.75. This wll give some Idea of tlio gradual drop In prices that has boon taking place on grass cows There were only a few stocker steers In the yards. One llttlo bunch of pretty gooi stuff , but off color , sold at $4.10 , the gooi colors out of the same lot having broughl $4.G5 early last week. It Is safe to say thai the market on the genial run of stock cattle Is 25c lower than It was the good tlmo last week. There \vos quite a largo string of western stock covVs and heifers * fifteen loads In ono buncii. Representative sales : BEEP STEERS. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. A feature of the mar ket was some buying for irood Wall street Interests , but this was noU prominent. The cause of tlve buytlng was largely a better class of cable news than had been expected. At the same- time crop accounts were Icsa uniformly bullish. The market opened steady at nn advance of 103 points nnd further 300 points. Then tnere was a llttlo realizing , enough of It to arrest the upward movement nnd cause some reaction. The general undertone of the market reflected a low pessimistic feeling th'an was hereto fore existed. ( The feature of the English cables , public and privata , WUB the In creased Interest ot spinners In spot cotton at .Liverpool. The weather department's special bulletin ore the recent floods in Texas made but little Impression here , as It failed to give any substantial data as to the prob able curtailment in bales of cotton in the Texas crop , only stating In England that the damage tto crops has been very great. Conservative boars today placed themselves In a moro safe relation to the market and arbitrage houses absorbed August whenever that monith was offered , wnlle a significant , feature In this connectSo * . was that August sellers were but little In evidence , whereas Autrust led the weakness tiast week. NEW YORK , Jury 17. George II. Keener , president of the Association of National Silver Clubs , said last night to a Times re porter : "I do not think that free silver coinage will be made the principal issue in the platform the democrats will adopt next year. If Mr. Uryan obtains control of the convention ho will , of course , sro that silver has a prominent place In the platform ; but no man or faction can , 1 believe , force that Issue back Into the prominence It had In 1896. The party fears that It would have no chance of winning on that old Issue. IJo- sldes there is a clumor for now issues and n fight along new lines. "I do not believe that null-Imperialism will bo made the chief or oven a conspicuous plank. The best men lu the democratic party cither approve the policy of the administra tion or feel that the present course has been inevitable and must bo fought through to success. It will not do for Bryan to put him self against the brains and patriotism of the country. Many of his friends have felt that ho Is only losing ground by his present policy of attacking the administration's position and have advised him to light on ground where ho can easily score a victory. Wo have urged him to attack McKlnloy for the palpnbro errors In the conduct of the war. He could score a hit by showing that It was duo to the > administration's dllatoriness that so much fighting and slaughter has been necessary and by showing that our soldiers were actually starved in the field. " Mr. Keenoy said that there Is a very de cided revolt in the south and east against Bryan. "Gorman Is stronger than he is usually considered , " he said. "There is strong disposition on the part of eastern and south ern democrats to try an eastern man next year and Gorman may prove to bo a very powerful factor In the result. The south erners ore repeating that the western com bination failed in 1896 and in 1898 and that the chief consideration at this tlmo Is suc cess. They will , I believe , demand a demo crat who will unite the east and south and one who will not in himself revive the old issues upon which wo have met only de feat and disaster.
