ROCK ISLAND AND BURLINGTON SUFFER I'ornirr l' r the lltirllnRton Ifile lle- tneen Oninhii nnil Lincoln nnrllnutonS lllllliiKH Mno IN llli.fl.nl. 'Railroad ' property has suffered considerably during the last few days owing to the heavy rains. Little streams which have ne\er been considered formidable heretofore liave suddenly risen out of their banks and the walor has carried away large sections of roadbed The Rock Ishnd has suffered an extended washout on Its line bctncen Omaha and Lincoln , nnd all of Its trains are op erated for the present between the two cities over the Burlington. The latter road has not been nlthnut trouble of Its own. What seemed Monday like an Insignificant wash out between Ravenna and Mason City has de veloped Into something larger and no trains dro operated through on the Billings line. Workmen are engaged In repairing the dnm- ngc , but 11 will probably be at least another day before the track can he restored. The Tlurllnglon also hud a smalf washout on the ( branch to Burn ell , but It Is not causing nny great Inconvenience , Nebraska seems to bo getting Its full uharc of rnln this summer , If the reports to thn railroad offices are to bo accented as nn Indication. These reports show good rains o\cr nearly the whole of the state on Tucs- day. In ( tome cases being almost Hoods. 3-"rom the dotalled reports rrccl\ed at the 23urllngton headquarters It Is learned there n\as good rain all over the northern division of the road , the heaviest being at Ashland , whcro a fraction over two Inches is recorded. The southern division had good rain from tRulo to Dine. Hill and the name Is true of the northern division. As the floods have washed out the telegraph lines on a portion of the Wyoming division , there Is no record of the amount of water , although there Is practical evidence that there was rain In eomo degree beyond Ravenna. Mclicoil IjiicKn nxperlenec. There IH not the slightest degree of satls- fnctfon among Omaha railroad men over the election of F. McLcod as chairman of the Western Passenger association. All speak of the new man In the most flattering man ner personally , but they feel ho has not Jiad sufficient experience In an executive way to take so Important a position. Mr. Mc Lcod was In Omaha last summer and made n favorable Impression upon those whom ho met. Ho Is a man of striking presence and lias the facility for extending the glad ( hand , which makes him welcome In e\cry gathering. It Is said by some that It was this happy manner more than his ability us nn executive officer which secured him the election. Ho will accept the place , nnd will take possession of Ills now olfice next Satur day , as Mr. Caldwell's resignation will go into effect at that tlmo. TrueHiliile AKiiln COIIICM Went. J'resldenl Truesdale of the Lackawanna continues to como west after men to assist him In the management of the conservative old eastern road. His latest acquisition Is iW. H. Hunter , for four years railroad editor of the Chicago Times-Herald , who has been made general advertising agent for the road. The Lackawnnna road Is one of the oldest In the country and its earnings are more than these of any other road , yet up to the present time , in an ago when adveiUsing ! has greater general popularity than ever , it Is estimated the management of the road has not averaged on expenditure of $3,000 o year for that purpose. With the advent of Mr. Truesdalo now llfo has been Injected Into the old system and nineteenth century cncthods are being adopted. Tent n Ae Mull Cntcher. The engagement of Cainllle D'Arvllle nt the Crelghton Orpheum this week has ap parently proved a decided social event. Society has been present In brilliant array at each performance and the charming cnn- tatrke has been the recipient of many calls from old friends In this city. Monday evening the Elk * presented her with a lovely floral piece a lyre designed In roses and leaves. Indeed Miss D'Arvlfle has been exceedingly well received by the people of Omaha and has doubtless spent a very pleas ant time. She has the faculty for -winning popularity which almost amounts to genius. Her selection of Bongs is especially admir able. An operatic aria , a piquant balmd , a tender love ditty and n sweet lullaby are among the songa she sings It is a fact that the applause which greets her Is pretty well divided between parquet and gallery. Indicating that her art Is sincerely appre ciated by all. The cluster of specialties iwr- roundlng the celebrated star this week is particularly fascinating. At the matinee this afternoon the patrons will have an op portunity of hearing n peerless prima donna and seeing a vaudeville bill which has rarely been equaled in the west.
