NEW YORK , May ID.-Tho stock market was .abandoned almost wholly to profes sional traders on the floor of the exchange. No outsldo demand of any importance was apparent at any point In the list. Prices were marked up sharply at the opening on a demand from the shorts , who sold the specialties yesterday. Sugar , Brooklyn Transit and the Flower group generally showed the largest gains , the demand be ing obviously from the short Interests. An- nconda Mining showed strength both In London and here , which was well main tained throughout the day and the tone nt Manhattan was also flrm without any pub lished news to account for It. The opening demand from the shorts was soon satlsllcd nnd prices slipped away , but without any pressure to sell. The dullness nt the decline cline- seemed to Impress the professionals with the Idea that the reaction was over nnd they turned buyers , again marking prices up , especially In Sugar and Brooklyn Transit. But It became quickly evident that the largo bull Interests which were ac tive early In the week were not prepared to resume operations and the advance did not hold. The absence of any demand for stocks caused the traders to turn bears again nnd the market sagged and drifted qiilto aim lessly for the balance of the day. The short sales by the traders were covered be fore tho. close , bringing prices In a groa.t many cases back to about last night's level. There was rather a sharp dccllno In fTo- bacco In the last hour , with which the pro fessionals associated rumors regarding the health of a. mcmtmr of the company. The large demand for railroad stocks which was 'manifest ' In yesterday's trading was lack ing today and that department of the mar ket was very dull comparatively , but quite flrm at some points. The grangers showed weakne.es which Is attributed to the con tinued rumors of crop damage. London bought a few stocks In this market , but took no nctlvo part owing to the pending holidays there. In splto of the , small buyIng - Ing by London sterling exchange hardened an additional fraction , the demand rate allowing an advance of % c on the pound since last' week. Money continued easy and estimates of tomorrow's bank statement are of a large Increase In cash reserves , as the market has gained heavily from fho subtreasury on account of the final | > ay- ment to the order of the Spanish govern ment on Monday of JS.OOO.OOO. and also by receipts from the Interior. Reports from Interior points arc. of largo cash reserves on hand nnd a steady demand for safe In vestment. The railroad bond market continued to show a large Investment demand , especially 'or recent reorganization Issues. Very icavy Individual blocks of the new. . Balti more & Ohio bonds nnd of the Wisconsin Central firsts were taken off the market. There were , some declines In price late in the day. but the firmness at other points made the market Irregular. Total sales , , ! 4,370.000. United States new 4s advanced % In the bid price. The Commercial Advertiser's London Inanclal cablegram says : The markets lore were stagnant but steady today. Americans opened hard and London and the continent 'bought ' up to V4 point above parity ; New York then eased olt and. the close was about the opening level. Spanish 4s spurted to 65 on Paris buying and bear closing ; tlntos were 60g ; Anacondas were 12 % on American buying In the street. The following are the closing quotations for the leading stocks on the New York exchange today : Bx-rlghts. General Tone of TrnilltiR IN Firm and I'rlcon Stonily. , LONDON , May 19. The third series of the wool auction sales closed today with the usual good attendance. The offerings today numbered 7,783 bales and Included a , fair selection , of .merinos , especially scoureds , which brought out Improved com petition. Greasy was eagerly bought by France and New Zealand crossbreds were In largo supply and were principally taken toy Yorkshire at full rates. The general tone , at the close of th'3 ' sale toflay was very firm. Today's continental advices reported terminal markets again advanced 10 cen times. During the series ended today prac tically the whole available amount cata logued was Bold , only 4,500 bales being car ried over. The continental buyers pur chased 95,000 bales and the home buyers 83,000. At the opening of the serifs prices showed an advance , of 15dT20 per cent In merinos and 714JT15 per cent in crossbreds. During the first week the former grade showed a hardening tendency under strong continental operations , especially the French buyers , which resulted In 20iZT23 per cent and occasionally 30 per cent advance above the March serlss. A slight casing up In the continental demand for scoured caused a shading from the highest prices , otherwise rates were maintained through out. The feature of the sale was the eager ness of the home trade for crossbreds nnd especially coarse goods. In the latter part of the series French operations hardened rates 15JJ20 per cent above the- March sfrles. Largo supplies of low coarse caused Irreg ularity , but they closed llrm nt an Improve ment of from 10 to 20 per cent , partly at tributed to th'3 ' fact of manufacturers try ing to force the heavier and coarser goods market owing to the highness of merinos , which allowed barely a profit. Capo of Good Hope nnd Natal- was In moderate supply , duo largely to shipments direct. There was eagerness to secure this wool early at an advance of from 10 to 15 per cent. Later prices hardened to 20 per cent nnd closed at about this rate , the most notable being medium scoured. The latest advices from Australia report that owing to the continued drought th'5 next clip will probably show a greater reduction than nt llrst supposed. Cable advices reported n decrease In the shipments for the seckon of 1898 and 1S09 of 60,000 bales. Buyers were all out early In spite ot the downpour and they not only bought the cattle , but they bought them at strong urlces. The way the corn fed steers sold today It Is safe to cal' the general market 10015C higher for the week. Choice light and medium weights In many cases show more than that advance , while heavy cat- | tie , oven those that are right good , do not show as much Improvement. The most en- cour gins feature of the market , however , is the fact that buyers want the cattle and are buying everything that Is coming for ward eagerly. Salesmen llnd no dllllculty In disposing o everything received at cur rent prices , and even on days when the re ceipts are large the market la active Just thesame. . Butchers' stock sold at yesterday's strong nrlcos and the market was active , BO that the few loads hero were disposed of in good season. Packers all want good fat cows and heifers and such cattle are selling at very high prices as compared with the way steers ace selling. Bulls , stags , vealjCalves , etc. , sold In Just about the same notches as yesterday , the market on that kind of stuff showing no materal change in any direc- The situation as regards stock cattle was decidedly against the sellers today. In the llrst place there were no country buyers in and speculators were all loaded up wth high-priced cattle which have not been go- Ins Into the country very freely the last few davs. Then , too. It was near the end of the week and speculators could hard.y liooe to sell anything that they might buy before next week. Moreover there seemed to be a feeling among regular operators on the market that they have been settlnjr prices up too high and that they would have to come down to Induce the country to buy. The result was 'that speculators started out with the determination that they would buy the cattle 25c lower or they would let them alone , and they carried out 'their ' determination. Some of the cattle sold 25c lower and others were carried over. Representative sales : BEEP STEEK3. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. Pr. 1. . 70 $3 73 21..1331 $4 C3 20..1275 $1 SO 1..1140 375 35. . Yesttrday the liosa sold mostly at 3.57H < fi3.CO , with a top at J3.70. Commencing with Monday the market has been tending downward steadily until today. when a reaction set In. During the first four days of the week the market lost lOc , or. to be more exact , 9c from the average price paid at the close of last week , so that the navanco today does not quite rnako It up. Still the hogs hold today Juut alioiit where they did on Friday of last week. Tha market U also a shade better than It was two weeks , ago , The local demand for hogs continues very good nnd packers are. free buyers of every thing coming ut current prices.
