Stock values then suffered on a continuance of yesterday's heavy liquida tion nnd receded sharply , the specialties losing from 2 to nenrly C points. By noon liquidation had practically ceased and there were rallies -which ) among the specialties ranged from 3',4 to 8U. The standard railways moved far less widely , except for Burlington and Dela ware & Hudson , which made net gains of 1 % and 3 < 4 respectively. Among the spe cialties : the net gains extend to 14V4 in Air Brake , 6 % in Metropolitan , 3 % In Manhat tan , 3V& ; ln Brooklyn Transit and an average of 2 points ! In Federal Steel , Sugar , Na tional Steel and Tennessee Coal and Iron. Call money rates ruled at about 5 per cent most of the day , and their steadiness was a sourceof confidence , as * was the easier tone In sterling exchange , which was at tributed to the London purchasing of stock ? . Another reason which might be assigned for the rally was the fact that the Ford franchise tax bill would not figure In the tax levy for this year and the hope of those Interested In the securities af fected that the delay of n year might bring about a modlhcatlon of Its pro visions. The sharp speculative contest between the bulls and bears In Brooklyn Transit , which ultimately resulted In favor of the former , wa ? , because of its great activity , a senti mental Influence In favor of taking the long sideIn other properties. The dissemina tion of a story that the Sugar Insiders were indisposed to come to terms with pres ent rivals because of the fear that other syndicates stood ready to start up a new opposition was supposed to have somothi" * ; to do with the dip in Sugar , but the readIness - i i Iness of a large house to absorb offerings brought about a reaction in which the earlier loss was more than recovered. Be sides the- tax franchise bill , the gas rate war Induced liquidation In Consolidated Gas. but covering of shorts and other pur chases caused the stock to rise above last night's figures. Late in the afternoon when the market broadened out and a general movement was under way , activity of commission houses was again noted. The market left off strong at generally the best prices. Some recessions occurred In the bond ma > ket In sympathy with the- early liquidation in stocks , but there were later partial re coveries. The total sales were $2,525,000. United States 3s , coupon , and the new 4s , coupon , declined % in the bid price. The Commercial Advertiser's London ca blegram says : The markets here were featureless after the holidays. Americans fluctuated within narrow fractions , clos ing weak at the- bottom on the fear ct gold exported from the United States. Cop pers were buoyant , Paris buying Tlntos up to 49J , ex-dividend , equivalent to Bllfc without the dividend. Anacondas were IZVi early. They relapsed to 13 1-10 , and closed at 13U. Utahs were 10 , Bostons 30 , silver i fell H point on bear eaes. : Americans not offering any. It closed nt 28Vi bid. There Is a slight French demand for gold at 77s 9d. With such liberal offerings from which to make selections the buyers were a little slow about getting down to business and the early market was draggy. Th * first bid3 were also lower , which made the mar ket still slower ut the opening. The Jocal demand , however , was good and as sollerH were holding on pretty strongly layers ro : cd thtlr hands and the market became fairly active and just about steady on the handy light and medium weight cattle. It took liard work to get the prices , however. The heavy cattle , as usual , were not so much sought after and were slow and 5c lower. Taklnsr everything Into considera tion. It musrt Of admitted that the market was In pretty deceit shape and practically everything so'.d In good season. The market on cowu'and heifers waa rea sonably actlvo at just about steady prices. Good heavy fat bulls sold reaBonably will and the3amo was true of light stock bulls , but canner bulls were extremely poor prop erty und It wo * hard work to get any one to look nt them. The veal calf market has slumped , owing to the fact that veals are BO much lower In 'tho east. Good calves sold today at $6.50 , such as have been bringing $0.75 most of the time. Stockers and feeders were In moderate supply and the market was steady with no quotable change to speak of. There is some country demand right along , which Is just about on a par with the small arrivals , so that the market is In a healthy condition. It will be remfinbered , however , that the market went off a little last week In sym pathy with a lower beef market , and It has not recovered any. Rouresantatlva sales : BEEF 3TEER9. Ko. Av. Pr. There is not very much to say about the market for the reason that everything was sold and weighed up In a very short time. The day's business could best be described as a good , active and steady market. Sellers were very wll pleased with the prices paid , and the mar ket as a whole was entirely satisfactory. The sales given below will show the kind of priceu paid for the sort of stuff on sale. . Buyers evidently want both sheep and lambs , and the active local demand Is kenp- Ing the market up to a high point , so that In some Instances the same kind of stuff has brought a good deal more money hero than at rlvnl market points.
