While on bis way home from a visit to a
doctor , from whom be had procured medi
cine lor a sick child , Patrick Qulnney of
Tort Vv'adsftorth Station , Staten Island , N
Y , was sucked Into a bed of quicksand and
smothered to death , Bajs a dispatch to the
Philadelphia Press. For eight days bis body
lay embedded within sight of bis borou ,
while scores of men searched for him Oa
tbe night of bis disappearance bis wife
pawed directly over his sunken body In tbe
road at least half a dozen times.
Qulnney , with bis wife and seven children ,
lived in Tompklns avenue at Fort Wads-
worth Station , just south of tbe track * of
tbe Staten Island Rapid Transit company
Tompklns avenue , which Is a country road ,
runs from Fingerboard Road diagonally t
and across tbe railroad tracks About half
way between Fingerboard road and tbu
tracks and a block from Qulnney's cottage ,
there Is a depression In Tompklns avenue
For more than a year the borough authori
ties have ibuen trjlng to make tbe road
passable It appears that this portion of tba
road is directly o\er a bed of quicksand , the
depth of which has not been ascertained
On March 2 Qulnney started for Clifton to
order a barrel of potatoes and to get gome
medicine for rno of the children from Dr
Morris. Tbe potatoes were delivered at his
borne tbe next day and tbe medicine was
found In his pocket when tbe body was re
covered. Tbe road was solid enough a
Qulnney traveled over It In tba afternoon ,
but while he was at Clifton a storm tame
up Water collected in tbe quicksand hollow
A man named Sox saw Qulnney at 6 o cloi k
start down Tompklns avenue toward b < s
home and that was tbe last seen of him
alive. From the position of the body wben
found It was apparent that when Qulnney
reached the weak Bpot the bottom literally
dropped out of tbe road , throwing him fare
downward In a puddle of mud , cand and
water. As be fell tons of dirt slipped down
on him , completely burying him frum tight
When Qulnney failed to return to bis borne
for nupper his wife became alarmed Sbe
went out to look for him at 9 o'clock 'walk
Ing down Tompklas avenue Tbe bole in ttie
road In wblcb her husband's body lay had
been bridged over by a plank on which she
crossbd Three times she made the trip to
Fingerboard road and back , passing six
times over the body of her husband Labor
era preparing to fill the bole again dug a
drain last Tburslay to carry off the wa-er
The body of Qumney was discovered FrHay
It was four feet undergrojcl at th" foot nd
cue at the bead .
