ETCHINGS OF LIFE IN CUBA An Omaha Soldier's ' Impressions of Havana Harbor and STRONG DEFENSES BUILT BY BLANCO StrmiRc Slulitu nnd Hxpcrlrnrcn of n Xen comer Tli c Clliiuitt' I'rciM- pcotltu MiiNtprliiir n ( ( ho Lieutenant Henry W , Morrow of thla city baa Joined Ills rceitnent , the Third Ne braska , in Cuba , after an extended sick loa\c. In ft letter dated Camp Columbia , Havana , .March 15 , to Judge Irving K. Bax ter , ho gives bis Impressions of army life In Cuba , scenes and Incidents In IIa\aua and Its harbor , as follows ; "As you will observe from tlio date line hero I am In Cuba , anil back from iny sick leave. I am feullug flno ns can be , and I ought to , for thla weather Is uot to bo excelled - celled I behove on the globo. Our location Is about two miles from the ocean , about eight mllo3 from the heart of Hiuana , Dur ing all the twenty-four iliours a pleasant breeze sweeps gently In from the ocean. It beard licalth with. It. The nights are cold and damp and breezy. During the day wo experience about euch weather as we of Nebraska enjoy during early and late sum mer. During the middle of the day it gro s warm , but not hot. There is but llttlo rain. It is often desirable to get more than wo have in order to lay the duet. All eBctatlon la remarkably rank in its growth. The country about here Is very hilly , but very fertile In the lower por- tlona. But enough of the country , "I left Columbus barracks two weeks ago tomorrow nnd went direct to Washington ontl from there to Tampa. Fla , "It seems most likely that wo will bo mustered out within tlio next few weeks , for ths Second Louisiana , which Is Itflgaded with us , leaves for tiho United States on Saturday next. I have already made n bet that wo will be In Savannah before Juno 1 ; so you can look to see mo back in a moro peaceful business at a very early date. Things hero are too peaceful to Justify any hopes of anything except the unsatisfying Idleness of camp life. I think e\eryono will bo glad to get back now that it Is certain there Is no excitement to bo found hero , But Just now everyone Is satisfied to remain a few weeks before the rainy season sets in and while the health of tbo camp Is so ex cellent. llni nna rurUllcntluni. "After various delays and unexpected In terruptions I arrived hero 'March 11 , via Tampa anil Key West. It wan with the greatest Interest we steamed into Havana harbor , past the famous Moro castle and Cabanas fortress , rugged and rocky bluffs of a decayed and dying nation , I wish wo could have scaled the bluffs , but wo would have been obliged to do It from the ocean , A land attack would nine been a desperate undertaking , Indeed , a land attack on Havana from any direction would have given the \olunteers all the glory and aft the gra\ea that the most fastidious could have nsked for. There could have been no ques tion as to the result , but tbo loss of men would lia\o been terrible. lilockhouses are as numcrout ) aa country crossroads in the vicinity of Ha\ana. The little , square , thlck- wailed , loop-holed structures command every Important ciossroad and point of vantage. Breastworks and trenches are very numerous In e\ery direction. In Cuba a cactus grows very rank and bccoines as thick and strong In Its trunk as the trunk or a tree. Thorns spring from its heavy green branches In every direction and when broken a milky fluid evudra that Is poisonous. Hedges of this stout cactus , high as a roan's head , and higher , and four or live feet thick are found everywhere. Through this hedge , and in visible , are stretched In many places several rows of barb wire. Such a hedge , supported by barb wire. Is simply Impregnable against any attempt to break through. It can only be Bcaled. All these indicate the skill and energy that Blanco exhibited In the defense of Havana. The more ono sees the more one wonders why Spain jlolded when it did , If it was as courageous as history paints it. DoliiK the Tim n , "Our ship anchored very close to the wreck of the Maine , I safely passed the custom ofllccr and hired a cab to drive me to Dunn's hotel. The driver could not under stand English and I could Jabber only a little Spanish , and the result was ho drove ma to the American hotel. I saw from the sign that a mistake bad been made and tried to make the driver understand It. But ho was Impervious to gestures or language , I Anally ga > e it up and took the American hotel on the strength of Its name. I was fortunate , for only Americans stay there and every ono speaks Etiglluh. Being quite hungry , I called for breakfast and was horrified to receive the answer that no breakfast was to bo had before 10 o'clock. It seems that hero a kind of lunch Is eaten on rising and breakfast is eaten between 10 and 12 , and later is dinner. At the lunch only coffee and bread are served , and It is crcamless and mllkless coffee at that and buttorless bread. At breakfast a square meal Is eaten. At the special request of the American boarders oatmeal was served nt this hotel , I survived this frugal meal and then started out to see a little of the city before going to camp. When I went to the custom house for my trunk I was Informed that it closed at 10 and remained closed until 12. This was to got breakfast. I felt like Imitating the historical remark of the naval captain at Manila and sajlng "To hell with breakfast , " but the remark would bavo been lost on those Spaniards anyhow. After three trips I succeeded In getting my trunk. StrniiKi * HlKliU. "What queer things they do and what queer things they say In Havana ! The sidewalks - walks are usually about a foot or two vtldc. It doesn't seem possible they v > ore intended for walks. One street will have porticos before every house and another will not have a portico its entire length. Why this is I cannot teI. ) But the porticos are usually quite stately. Hitching posts seem to bo an unknown device to this race of people. The porticos are flush with tbo street and if I ride up to the house I Just hitch my horeo to tbo window grating , letting the horse stand on ( ho portico. I have seen the horae several times standing Inside the house , par ticularly inside stores. Two-wheeled carts are most frequently seen , and heavy loads , that require the team towalk , are drawn usually by oxen ; for instance , in Omaha , adapting this system , all coal and Ice wagons und heavy trucking would < be drawn by oxen. Sometimes two , three , four , five and even six mules hitched tandem draw heavy loads. Just Imagine the string of aslnlnlty they make. But their animals usually look very sleek and well fed and well taken care of. " 1 have repeatedly seen a dozen horses led 0 > y ono man. This is the -way dt is done : The man leads the first horse , the second horse Is hitched to the tall of the first horse , the third to the tall of the second , etc. What is the matter i\fth that ? "Tbo better class of men are dressed Just as they aio in the United States , oven hats , collars , cuffs , ties and style of shoes are about the same. It is the poorer class that wear the costumes wo so associate with Cuba. " HER BUSINESS A SUCCESS Jill In. CrlNNuy-llooliler IlotlrvN from Trnile Aller Ye r of Hurt ! Work. The recent sale of the Crlssey pharmacy , marking the retirement of ono of Omaha's few successful business women , has moro Interest for the people of that part of the city than the mere announcement of its change * of owners. Early In the EO's O. M. CrUsey , u pharmacist , together with bis young bride , came to Omaha from Kankakeo , 111. , In quest of a location to start In buslnesi. After a careful survey of the situation the site at Twenty-fourth and Lake street * wua selected and a store was built by the owner of the ground especially for Mr , Crlssey. Business was at once started on the most modc&t scale and by close attention things wore progressing most favorably "when , after two years , the young husband was stricken down with typhoid fever which in four weeks terminated fatally. It was then that the fortitude , together with the most remarkable business talent of the foarcaved young wife , was made manifest. Mrs. Crlssey decided to not only continue the business , hut to take active manage ment herself. Previous to the death of her husband she had taken up the study of pharmacy while assisting hbn In the store , and had taken a special course at u college of pharmacy in Illinois. She therefore bent her energies at once to the demonstration of the fact that "woman may succeed In whatever she wills to succeed. " The result was that Julia M. Crlseoy , as Its ovtncr , was the high priestess to whom was per sonally confided the ofllce of administering to those Ills In her capacity of pharmacist and friend , 3o enthuslatlc and successful was her work that it attracted the marked attention and admiration of her lellonti In the trade. While Mrs. Crlssey was the first regis tered woman pharmacist in Nebraska , uho was also ono of the very llrtt of her BOX In the United States or the world to be Identified with the maintenance of pharma ceutical organizations , having served for three terms ao ocretary of the Nebraska Pharmaceutical association , finally declin ing when elected by acclamation to both the offices of secretary and president. Mrs. Crlssey also became known throughout the east and w st by numerous contributions to the literature of pharmacy. Some four years ago she became the wife of George W. Hoobler , well known In Omaba wholesale circles as the treasurer of the Richardson Drug company. Since her mar- rlago Mra , Hooblor lias gradually ghon tip the actlvo cares of business , Ica\lng the Earno to the management of clcrku , and do- \otlng moro time to literary and club work , in which spboro she Is prominent. HIuWIIH In III" AV Chicago Post : "I expect , " she said thoughtfully , "that I make a good many grammatical errors , " "No , " ho replied promptly and emphatic ally , "you do not. " "I am no glad to hear you say that , " ftlie exclaimed , with every evidence of gratifica tion. tion."No "No , " he repeated reflectively , "you do not make a good many grammatical errors. Marian Kooke , manager for T M Thomp son , n largo importer of line millinery at 1C58 Milwaukee avenue , CUItato , says rf Chamberlain's Cough Hemedy : "During the late severe weather I caught a dreadful cold which kept me awake at night and niiidn me unfit to attend my work during the day. Ono of my milliners was taking Chamber- Iain's Cough Hotncdy for n ecivoro cold nt that tlmo , which Bccmed to K'llmo hur ho quickly that I bought t > oine foi myself. It acted like magic and I began to Improve ut once. I am now cntliely well and fuel vtiy pleased to acknowledge its merits. For sale by all druggists , I.ulior Oinnlii Ylnclt. Detroit Journal. "The worm will turn ! " exclaimed the woman , menacingly. This was before she wont to housekeeping. Years pass. " 1'vo BO much to do I don't know which way to turn ! " she now says , with a smile. If a person docs her own work , uhe often hasn't time to fiel ill-used.
