CHICAGO , Feb. 23. Wlie.it was Very firm today until within ten minutes of the close of tlio session , whfn a 'Jio advance cmddcnly disappeared on realizing by longs rind May left off only Vic higher than yes terday. Corn and oats gained Uc each. T'ork and lard Imiwovcd lOo each und ribs Owing to a llttlo flurry In the March di vision In Now York and an ndvanco of % d at Liverpool before trading commenced hero wheat started firm. May opened % { ? Uc lilghor at 73U73c and under the buyIng - Ing spirit that took possession of the crowd touched 73' ' , o before a reaction set In. The crop situation , however , was decidedly moro favorable as a rule , there being little additional In the way of damage reports nnd much of the damage previously re ported was contradicted , whllo the Price Current In Its weekly summary stated that , the conditions were , If anything , better than ii iiul at this season of the year. This encouraged considerable selling for the nhort account and May sank slowly to VJ'.fcc. ' Chicago received 103 cars , of which 31 were graded contract , Minneapolis , and Uuluth receipts amounted to U9S carloads , as compared wltih 261 for the corresponding day . year ago. The Atlantic port clear ances of wheat nnd flour equaled 716,000 bu. This started the- crowd buying und as there was an undertone of apprehension concerning Che cold wave , which it was pre dicted was'approaching , May rose gradu ally to 73IJic. The market held strong until within ton minutes of the close of the ses sion , when several of the heavier local longs Sold out , causing the loss of all the previous gain , and May slid off to 73Uc. Bcillert1 , at the cloe. A reduction In the quantity being offered from the country strengthened corn. Com mission bous s nnd elevator concerns bought heavily nud the price was bid up oharply Near the end , however , when wheat started to decline , corn began to nhrtnk and the early gain was nearly lost. Iteci'lpts Were CS2 cars. May opened : L Bhado higher at So'iJi/S.yiic. ' advanced to 36U CcSe-ijiC , then weakened to 3Gc , buyers , at the clew , Hmall on.Vrlngs and a good cash de mand helped oats. Receipts were 321 cars. May began a shade higher at 27f(27c , rose to 2So and closed at 27c , sellers. A good short demand and a light run of liogs strengthened provisions. Longs were disposed to take profits nt the Improvement , liut with the exception of an early dip the market ruled strong and closed near the high point for the day. The destruction of the Swift warehouse at the yards had very little effect on the buying , as the building hold no regular product. May pork opened 7filOc higher at $9.62VjB9.C3 , rose to $9.67'f , , declined to $9.f > 7'i , then recovered to $9.63 at thB close. May lard started 57M. higher nt $ o.40fl-3.42Mi , touched $3.37' . then rose to $3.45 , sellers , the closing price. May ribs began Bo up at $ I.S2 > 2 , sold at $ I.SO , im proved to $1.85 and closed at $4.S2Vil.b5 , bui'cr ? . Market I'rrntlo nml IIonorN About Kven llvtM-een llnllM anil Itenrn , NEW YORK , Feb. 23.-Today's stock mar ket on dealings In cxco. < s of a million shares was extremely erratic and the net results showed honors about even between the. bulls and bears. The mo > U significant losses were made In Sugar and the granger group , Burlington figuring for 3'fc. ' The Inidcrtt In the other column were Tobacco , tiio Minneapolis A ; St. Louis shares and Third Avenue. The market showed considerable demand for foreign account , London taking fully 60,000 shares , over half of whlc.'i were the Atchl- sons. Plenty of Belling orders appeared and prices receded from the opening llgures , In some cases sharply. A rally ensued , with Tobacco , the coalers and the grangers prominent. Tobacco's strength was accompanied by the announcement that a E''ttlement ' with opposition cortcerns was Imminent , which involved a consolidation of Interests. The action of the Burlington directors of the re funding scheme not fulfilling expectations entortalnoil In some quarters , resulted In a sharp break In the property , which was uc- companled by a simultaneous break In Sugar. A report was circulated widely that a large issue of new government bonds was Impending and this attended a sharp raid. Tha formation was said to have bean re ceived lu a private dispatch , but no con- llrmatlon was obtainable. Tobacco lluctu- atlons on the various reports were very sensational. It opened up 7 points at 178 und slid olt to 172 , rallied to 179 and closed at 1S5V- . 1S5VOne interpretation of the deal reported was that tin rival company. Union Tobacco company , wan to too transferred to the Con tinental company , which is owned by the American Tobacco company. Metropolitan , after dropping 4 points from the opening , rallied 6V4 and closed a point off , while Third Avenue , lost about half of an 8 point rise. Consolidated G s worked up 4Vi und then suffered a decided break. Minneapolis & St. Louis shot up about 7 points and the { econil preferred G points on rumors that the directors might retire the company's Hist preferred. Special stiv-ngth was shown by American Steel gaining 3 points when the general list was crumbling. This was due to glow ing reports of the company's business , which emanated from parties connected with the property. Sugar was supported in the early dealings , but with a G point lots. Half-fat to pretty decent cattle sold at $4.40S4.1K > , there beinp nothing right good or choice on the market. The mar ket has had an upward tendency for three or four days back and the market for the week can safely bi quoted lOc and In some cases 15e higher th3n the close of last week. It must be berne in mind that wo have been getting none of the good kinds of cattle , \\hlch arc being quoted hlg-her in Chicago. The common kinds of cattle , such as make up the receipts at this point , have shown very little Improvement in other markets. Kor example , this morning Chicago reported "best cattle strong , others barely steady. " Cows and heifers were in light supply and good demand this morning and buyers were not long In picking up the few loads to be had. As was the case with fat cattle , the market was a little stronger and the feeling good and healthy. For the week to date it Is safe to say that cows and helfjrs are 16 ® 20c higher than the low day last week. The demand also appears to be better and the general feeling on the market Is much better. The prices paid today were , as a rule , very satisfactory to the sellers. Bulls , stagf , etc. , sold well. There were more stopkers and feeders hero than for several days back and some of them were right good cattle. In spite of the cold weather there was a good country demand , and , as regular yard dealers were all cleaned out of cattle , every one wanted supplies and the demand was very brisk. The rei-ult was ti good , strong and active , market , w'th ' most everything selling early. The table of receipts above will show that the day's arrivals of cattle of all kinds lacked a good dsal of being liberal and to the llgures might be added the further fact that of the cattle , hero seven loads were consigned direct to Cudahy , seven loads to Hammond and three loads to th2 Omaha Packing company.
