"Very few New York women know how to dtr3 , " until the newly nrrlvf.l westerner n.i IIP snl before nn open fire with his host , who was smoking , am ! his host's sister , who wasn't. The ninn with the plt > o said nothing , but looked to lilt sister for tlio defense , reports the New York Sun. "Why do you think so ? " she asked. "Well , my mother was here over Knster Sunday when ' c came from Kurone , and she satil she went up Fifth nventte pur posely to see the famous dress parade , nnd U was all rubbish. " "Your mother ppemls lee much tlmo In Paris and Chicago to understand Now York , " said the sister. "Tho famous dress parade Is out completely. I know a west ern woman who canio hero and Judged everything by certain novel * . She looked upon Mndlson avenue ns n literary Bhrlno because some of the characters lived there. I urged her to go to Boston. " "My mother met a New York woman In Rome. " retorted the westerner , "who n&IJ eho dliln't want to go Into the hecatombs , She knew shecouldn't stand the sight ol nn ancient"oesophagus. " Ills .host . applauded , pipe between teeth , "Go on , " ho said. "Wipe out sectional dif ferences. Let there bo no cast and no west. Tell some more. " The westerner mllcd gratefully. "Ono time out In 'Sloijtann , " ho said , 'they had to stop the train we were on four times In n day's run lo get n fellow off tha cowcatcher. He liked to rlilo there through the tunnels , ho said , nnd feel the hnll stones and coals of flro raining around him. Ho was the eon of an English lord seeing the country. That fame day a tramp was bothering the train folks by crawling In under the cars and getting free rides. At least they combined and put him off nt a water 'tank In the middle of a forty-mllo stretch without a tree. At first ho began cussing them for leaving him where ther was nothing to drink , but when they pointed to the water dripping from th tank , ho whlnned and said If there wa even a. cracker anil cheese grocery any- wtoero It .wouldn't . be eo Inhuman. Next day but ono I saw him talking to the En glish lord's son on the platform of the sta tion of a largo town a thousand inllea nearer the Pacific ocean. Ho had evidently caught on successfully when the first express > tralu came along. I asked the Englishman what the .tramp said to him. Ho had n monocle , and ho clapped It Into his eye and an swered : " 'Pon my word , It was most extraordin ary , you know. Ho asked me If I could Klvo him the address of the best hotel lu the city. You Americans have tlie name of rising from poverty to affluence In an In credibly short tlmo , but this fellow had not even , had tlmo to change his clothes. " "Go on , " said the man with the pipe. "Tell another. " "Tho next ono Is New York brand , " smiled the westerner. "I saw a sign up near Cen tral park , too , 'Oil Paintings and Table Board. ' So I went exploring over on the east side to recover from the shock to my Chicago culture. I was In a queer llttlo shop over there , half old clo' and half dress making and tailoring , nnd n little wlzcned- up old man came In , n peripatetic genius , who had a bundle of things to sell to the proprietor. Ho had Jong hair , parted In the mlddlo behind , and combed up over his ears In the most fantastic way. Ono lock had fallen down , nnd all the time he was trying to make his sale I kept feeling as If I ought to say , 'Miss , your hnlr Is coming down , ' and offer him a hairpin from tlie head of the lady he was trying to sell his things to. Ho had some- old ostrich tips and a shirt waist nnd a linen duster , about the size for a girt 12 years old , -which ho ex hibited In triumph ns 'a great bargain , a whole dress1 for only 25 cents. ' The proprle- ' tor told him there were no 'children about the place to wear such a thing , even If It wasn't cold .weather. " 'Dot's a pity , ' ho said , doing the pathctlo nnd sympathetic. 'Dot's a big pity. You too young got a llttlo girl of your own , but you no got a llttlo sister ? Dot's tco bad. You mooch better go adopt a girl to bo your sister to get sooch a bargain ns dot , a whole linen dress for only 25 cent. ' " "You see some funny signs over on the east side , don't you ? " asked his host's sis ter. ter."I don't remember any. I remember once In Chicago seeing 'Tobacco and Period icals' at a tombstone utore nnd under It 'Ladles nnd Gents' Shrouds Always on Hand. ' But , of course , that wasn't funny. What was the funniest thing you saw In Spain ? " with polite deference to- his host's Bister , who likes to talk .about her Spanish travels. "Well , " she said reflectively , "thero was an old woman who was our guide at the pal ace of the Escurlal , vlco her BOH , who was showing some other people about. She tool : us to a painting which she told us repre sented Philip II washing the feet of the twelve apostles nnd she was angry because wo laughed nt the difference In time. " CARE OF WOMEN'S HAIR. Keep It Clean nnd Uiie nn Vcvr Hair * IiInn nn Po llilf. To keep the nalr In good condition , says Ruth Ashmoro In Ladles' Homo Journal , It Is absolutely necessary not only to brush It with clean brushes nnd great regularity , but certainly once In two weeks lo glvo It a thorough shampooing BO that every partlclo of dust may be removed from It. The soft , fluffy look of the hair , and Ha beautiful gloss after being shampooed , shows how grateful It Is for the treatment given It. Experience , though sometimes a tiresome- teacher , has taught me that the best way to cleanse the ecalp and the hair Is to use very hot water made "soap-sudy" with tar eoap ; use a nail-brush , upon which the soap has been rubbed , to scrub the scalp thor oughly , and after every part of the scalp Is washed rinse the hair and head with baths of water , the first being the temperature ot that used for washing the hair , and th last ordinarily cool , the batha between hav ing been gradually graded. To get such a bath for the head It Is only necessary to hoia one'H bead over the basin and have the water from a email pitcher poured over It. Each bath necessitates the wringing out of the hair until It Is quite free from coap. suds , and until the water Is as clear as before - fore It went over the head. When the hair Is shampooed it Is wise to put on a loose wrapper that cannot bo Injured either by water or soap. I do not advUo the use of k fan In drying the hair as It ha-i been found to give many women severe colds , nor do I recommend the loose Turkish toweling for rubbing the hair , since It Is apt to leav fluffs of white cotton all through It ; but for the first rubbing use a thick , bard , Turk ish towel , and after that rub the hair and the head with ordinary towels which have been made hot for this purpose. You will bo surprised to see how quickly and com fortably the balr dries. Do not put the hair up until It Is perfectly dry , or It will remain damp for a long time and have a close , mouldy and altogether undestrablo smell about It. Via as few hairpins as you possibly can. MUlook It for a Sign. Washington Star ; "I never buy readymade - made clothing , " said Senator Sorghum. "I didn't know you were a fattldlous dresser. " "I'm not. But a friend of mine once bought a ready-made suit of clothw whllo be was a member of the legislature. Ho forgot to take the price tag off , And a man who happened to bo buying legislators at that time refused to give a cent more the | 20 on the advertisement. " i
