12 TITE OMAHA DAILY BEE : SATURDAY , DECEMBER , 181)8. JUST A PLEASANT DREAM Eailroad Story from Chicago Looked On as a Fipo Emanation ! NOT BUILDING WESTERN EXTENSIONS Rock Ifttnnil nnd nnrllnitinn Official * Deny the HciiortN I'nt Out nnd MV flood Urimonw for Til el r Improbability. In local railroad circles but little stock Is taken In the Chicago report to the effect that the Uock Island ami the Burlington roads will noon build out to the Pacific coast. Such extensions are viewed as possibilities to develop Into certainties only after cacti railroad has had several years' run of highly prosperous business. . A Rock Island man says : "It Is generally known that when our western line was built our folks wcro headed for the coast and they expect to get there some day. Hard times camp along and stopped the line In Colorado. I do not think there Is anything In the talk about present extension west , though It wilt come some day. Both Mr. Cable , the chairman of the Board of Directors , and President I'urdy have de nied that there la anything In the report that the Hock Island will absorb the Colorado Midland , 80 1 do not think that needed to be considered seriously at all. " At Burlington headquarters the reported extension of the B. & M. to the Pacific coast Is received with Incredulity. If any Bur lington surveyors wcro at work In Idaho last summer It Is Impossible to secure any confirmation of the fact nt local headquar ters and the report Is not generally be lieved. At present the Burlington reaches San Francisco through the Illo Grande lines , southern California over the Santa Fo and the northwest territory through a close traffic Arrangement with the NorthernPa- _ clflc at Billings , Mont. It Is befloved by Omaha railroads that there Is greater prospect of the Southern Pacific's moriopory of California business be ing disputed at an early date by lines other than the Burlington and the Rock Island. The approaching entrance of the Santa Fo Into San Francisco Is viewed with Interest , nnd there Is thought to be something In the prospective southwestern extension of the Rio Grande Western to reach southern Cali fornia. Illo firnnric Will Ilnllil. It Is reported from Salt Lake that the Rio Grande will positively build from Herper , Utah , on Its line , through Sallna canyon , Into Iron county , Utah , nnd that a largo new smelter will be buirt at Helper. This has always been the pet project of Gen eral Palmer nnd Colonel Dodge as a link In a California short line , and In 1881 and 1SS2 the route was fully surveyed from Orccn Hlvur nnd other points on the main line over the hills to Sallna. The Rio Grande Western takes more than a passing Interest In the Utah & Pacific , now ncarlng completion. It Is pointed out that the new road Is spoiling the pet project of Messrs. Palmer and Dodge and that when the truth comes out It will be fully shown that the Rio Grande Western Is behind the Southern Pacific surveyors In Iron county. It has been given out b'y President A. W. McCuno of the Utah & Pacific that that company will have a branch to the Iron and "coal of Cedar City , and he further stated that his own personal ambition waste to establish a steel plant in Iron county and tbo project would bo pushed next year. The presence of rival surveyors has not deterred the Utah & Pacific , which is steadily work ing southward. Tbo Union Pacific Is not working Us Utah mines , so up to a short time ago the Rio Grande Western had almost the exclusive trafflc. But the Immense Increases In ton nage at Dlamondvllle and Kemraorer , the development at Gross Creek and Morrison have helped distribute the local coal trade and naturally has hurt the Pleasant Valley company. Two years ago , at the desert where Kem- mcrer station stands , there was little coal shipped. Now 200 cars dally are shipped from this one point. The Sanpete Valley road was , at the same period , buying all Its coal from the Pleasant Valley ; today It Is selling coal all over Sanpete county from Its Morrison mines , supplying Us own road and shipping coal to the Utah & Pacific at Mllford. With these actual facts In broad view , It would certainly seem natural for the Rio Orando Western to head off all at tempts of a rival road to penetrate Iron county , thereby developing still another coal mine and decreasing their coal tonnage. Lnrite Shipment of The largest shipment of buggies ever made to one firm In the United States will arrive in Omaha over the Burlington on Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock , and bo delivered to Llnlngcr & Motcarf , Implement and carriage dealers of this city. The shipment consists of thirty large freight cara loaded with bug gies from the Staver Carriage company of Chicago. It Is not only the largest ship- in out of buggies ever made , but is said to be the first full train of buggies ever shipped tea a single firm In this country. The value of the buggies IB uomewliat over 150,900 , and the arrival of such a shipment In this terri tory Is accepted aa another indication of the rcmarkabre Increase In business. The train is making a daylight run across Illinois and Iowa and left Chicago on Thursday after noon. Sorrow for Mr . Siiyder. There was much regret expressed in local railroad circles over the death of Mra. Har vey A. Snyder , wife of Assistant General Freight Agent Snydcr of the Rock Island rood , In Chicago on Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. 6nyder resided In Omaha for a number of years until January 1 , ISO" , when the former wa promoted to his present position. Mrs. Snyder was known and esteemed by a wide circle of friends In this city. Interment will bo made at her former home In Philadel phia. Xew ItulliTiiy Incorporated. DBS MOINES , la , , Dec. 23. Ocnernl I'mmcnKcr Accent FrnnclM linn n SiitfKCHtlnn to Mnkc. General Passenger Agent Francis of the n. & M. road has written a letter to Gov ernor Holcomb of Nebraska netting forth the desirability of creating a board whose duty It shall be to secure and compile agri cultural statistics of this state. In speaking of the matter , Mr. Francis said to a Bco reporter : "At the present tlmo Nebraska Is losing a great deal of valuable advertisement It might receive through timely publication of figures showIng - , Ing the resources and the products of the j | ; stato. The state of Kansas Issues through > Its state agricultural board reports of all ' i Its crops soon after they are harvested. Then the figures are of Interest and the newspapers - . papers not only In Kansas , but throughout I the country , are glad to print them. The result Is that the state of Kansas In this way receives a great deal of splendid ad vertisement. It Is possible at any tlmo to secure from the Kansas State Board of Agri culture up-to-date figures on the agricul tural conditions of that etato. "In Nebraska the state does Issue some crop reports , but they generally como along about twelve months too late to be of service. Because of this delay In getting out each statistics the state of Nebraska loses an op portunity to secure attention for Its agri cultural products which It might secure from the country at large If the figures wcro compiled and made public when they are news. " St. Lou l Ittitc In llnlnril. CHICAGO , Dec. 23.
