10 THE OATAHA DAILY JliKEl W JSP JNJDS WATT , DJSUJUIVIBEK 31 , 18 ! 8 , COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Prices Generally Feel Effect ! of tbo Oncoming Holiday Beaten , WHEAT SUFFERS A HALF-CENT DECLINE Market FnlU to ncipond to Yeiterdnr' * Advance and Are Able to Find Few En- cunrnKlnir Argument * . CIIICAQO. Dec. 20. Wheat today fell Jnto the slough of deapond that generally forms during the holiday esason. The mar ket closed at a decline of > 4c. Corn and cat * lost only a shade of their previous value. Provisions closed unchanged to c lower. With a weak Ijlverpool market and rather liberal local and northwest receipts to con tend with bulls In wheat were badly handi capped at the opening. Liverpool failed ut terly to follow yesterday's advance here , and on the contrary showed early declines of l-S t&d , probably because of the Increase of 3,500,000 bu. In American stock ? . Minne apolis and Dululh receipts were 783 cars , compared with SGI last wesk and 290 a year ago. Chicago receipts were 205 cars , six of contract grade. Buying orders at the start were very few and far between. May opened Me lower at C7HSTC7 3-Sc. This price prevailed for a short time , while the strength nhown by the coarser grain markets en couraged buyers and caused a little scat tered covering by shorts. The total amount bid for was small , but In the almost stag nant condition o-f the market It was sufll- clent to cause a reaction In the May price to 075-8c. Then the. market weakened again. All outside markets were weaker than Chicago. New York reportsd a. very Black foreign demand. As the foreign de mand has been the big prop of the market In tlmos of liberal receipts reports of this nature had the effect of contracting the speculative demand und prices once more slowly slid off and before 11:30 : May had reached 6 ? 1-Sc. The selling pressure at no time was heavy , but there was at limns an entire absence of bids. Weather In the -west was accompanied by statements that winter wheat was unprotected In many places and apprehensions of crop damage caused a little more llrmne s for a short time after the noon hour. Bradstreet's report of the world's visible , showing an Increase of 8,390,000 bu. , took away what little back bone the market had left and late trading was all In favor of the bears. May finally rot down to C87-80G7c nnd closed at 67 ® 67 l-8c. Corn was rather quiet but steady. The feature of the market was the large direct export business , almost 1,000,000 bu. This tnd the firm cables and wet weather made the market very Jlrm at times. The- weak ness of wheat and the rather poor quality of corn receipts affected the market later nnd a slight advantage was lost. Receipts were 720 cars. May ranged from S5\'t \ < a 35 3-Sc to ? WAffXi 5-Sc and closed a shade lower at S5yt&X > 3-Sc. Oats were fairly active and Irregular. May was firm early , helped by corn and the wet weather , but December watt weak and was offered nt Ic under May without tak ers. It was apparent the. short Interest was liquidated. Export sales from hero were liberal 250,000 bu. Rerclpts were 3S1 cars. May ranged from 26'X-W2G G-Sc to 26 7-Sc and closed 1-So lower at 20 5-8c. The market for provisions was decidedly narrow. Around the opening some uneasl- liefs was shown , hog prices being lower nnd packers showing a disposition to press nales. The strength of corn helped the market some. Trading was almost at a etondstlll late In the day and prices drooped again , the market being heavy nt the close. May pork closed unchanged at J9.6716 , May lard He lower at $5.30 and May ribs a shade lower nt J4.80. NEW YORK , Dec. 20. The market after the Irregular course left off strong at the best , with gains ranging from 2 to 4 points In some of the specialties , while the bet terment In standard shares was fractional. The market lacked a decided tone at the opening In sympathy with Irregularity of Americans In London , where there was evi dence of some realizing sales. Chicago & 1 Alton , Biscuit preferred nnd Tennessee Coal & Iron were among the first stocks to display strength. Missouri Pacific , Federal Steel and Sugar In succession began to rise ami tended to check another weak nnd hesitating market. Union Pacifies , In com mon with the other International stocks , suffered somewhat for a tlmo on the realiz ing sales from abroad. After 1 o'clock trad ers gradually took the long side. Sugar was boosted up on the shorts and on large transactions rising nearly 5 points. Favor able weekly earnings wsro responsible for a rlso In southern Railway preferred. A very strong movement In the late trading In the Atchlson Issues was transferred to Federal Btesl and Baltimore & Ohio and gradually helped the whole list. Interests Identified with the trade were large pur chasers of Federal Steel , while the pur chase of Atchlson was made In the hope of some favorable action at tomorrow's direc tors' meeting. The expectation of an early announce ment of Central Pacific reorganization plan was responsible for a rise In that stock of about 4 points. Manipulative orders helped In making up American Steel nnd Wire. Minneapolis & St. Louis stocks continued the recent notable advance. The new stories about the local gas controversy set tlement were instrumental In lifting Con solidated Gas. While transactions of the day were not up to the recent tremendous volume of business the greater amount of activity for the day developed In the clos ing hours , while the market was moving upward. Call money , which for some time has been ruling from 2 to 2 % per cent , was bid up to 41/4 per cent , which was paid for a small loan In the last half hour , nnd directly afterward thcro was a good-sized loan at 4 per cent , but the flurry was quickly ended by largo amounts of money offered nnd the rate dropped to 2 % per cent , the closing price. This Incident had no effect on the market , which continued to rise sharply. Transactions In bonds showed a marked contraction In dealings nnd speculation was vsry erratic. Total sales. $3.389.000. United States new 4s , registered , advanced 3-8 per cent , the coupon U and the 3s and old 4s , coupon , 1-8 In the bid price. The Commercial Advertiser's London financial cablegram says : "Tho markets here were stagnant and drooping today , waiting for the holidays. In Americans dealings were small nnd consisted mainly of realizing here , except In Baltimore & Ohio. New York bought the latter , Union Pacific and Central Pacific , causing n hardening tendency. Gold in the opening market was bid. but was bid for by Ger many at 77s lld. Buyers seemed to want a few cattle , nnd they were out In good season nnd picked up the desirable kinds at strong prices. Some pretty goo * native i cattle , not overly fat. brought J5.00. Ono thing Is evident , and that Is that the buyers are buying the cattle at present prices under protest , nnd that they do not hesitate to sit down upon anything that doea not happen to please them or that they con do without. Cows and heifers as a rule brought bet ter prices than yesterday , and It would be a very consjrvatlve statement to call the market strong. There was no great number on sale and buyers were not long In picking up the most of the offerlnss. Bulls and rough stock generally was just about steady. In the feeder division there was a" better feeling than for some days back , and the market was a little stronger. There was quite a string of western cnttlo In the yards which met with quite ready sale. Some heavy Colorado feeders sold at $3.90 and some Utah feeders brought $3.85. While there Is no great demand for feeders , a few are wanted , nnd , as receipts have been very light for some days past , the market has strengthened up very materially. On the opening choice llsht weights old as hleh as J3.35 , good medium weights and llcht mixed and choice heavy all sold up to $3.30. Good heavy and mixed loads went largely nt J3.27',4 and big heavy at $3.25. Rough mixed loads , and loads made up of heavy hogs running down to pigs generally went at about $3.25. Light pigs and skips of course fold much lower , that Is , right around $3. $ Some of the heaviest packers were bearish from the start and were talking easier prices , their favorite bid being J3.23 for most anything In the way of good heavy or mixed packing hogs. A little later on and before half of the hogs had been soli ) , Chicago cage sent In reports of a lower market , nnd that nave the bears a decided advantage. Still the buyers wanted the hogs and the most that rould be said Is that the market closed a little easier than It opened. There was a larger proportion of the late sales at t3. j. and they got better hogs at the close for } 3.27',4 than they could buy for that money early. The market , as H whole , was not much different from yesterday , the range of prices being the same , ana no material change In the average of the sales. Practically everything gold In good enron. It will be noted from the table of receipts at the head of the column that the arrivals ao far this week ahow a material falling off 88 compared with the corresponding dnys of last week , and It I. evident that thn lower ranife of prli * * prcvnlllnK Is not such a strong inducement to largo shipments.
