STAMPING OUT THE SMALLPOX Oitj Official * Take Prompt Btopa to Oheck the Dread Disease. SCHOOL CHILDREN TO BE VACCINATED Hoard of Education Pause * a Ileaoln- tlon Ilfiferrlnsr to the ( Saratoga and Similarly Situated School * Pe t House to Oe I'roTlded. No further cases of small pox have been reported or discovered In the north ern or any other part of the city. The city health department is not ready to say yet that no other cases ex ist or that there is no danger of an epi demic , but every effort Is being made to stamp out the disease and to prevent Ita spread. The mayor , the Board of Educa tion and the city council have joined with the Hoard f Health In efforts in this di rection , The afflicted families are strictly quaran tined , The Doard of Health is putting their promises in first-class sanitary condition. Every member of the families has been vac cinated , A physician Is to be selected to at tend to their cases. In this way it Is hoped that If the disease baa not spread outside the tlireo households it will bo effectually stamped out. According to reports , all the tck people are doing well. The Board of Education yesterday morning told an early meeting to take some action to prevent the Bprcacl of the disease by means of the Saratoga school , which Is located In ( be immediate vicinity of the disease dis trict and whldh the children of the families that have been stricken attended. The fol lowing resolution by Sears waa passed : Whereas , Several cases of what Is pro nounced by physicians to be smallpox have eppeurcd In the northern part of the city Dear the Saratoga school , and Whereas , It is important that this Board of Education should co-operate in every way possible with the Board of Health , to pre vent the spread of the disease , therefore bo It Resolved , That the president of this board bo and is hereby authorized to appoint a committee of four physicians , one of whom shall be the city health commissioner and two of whom shall bo women , to proceed at once to the Saratoga school and by einmlna tlon of the children there In attendance de termlne which of them need vaccination In order to protect their ihealth and the health of their companions. Be It Resolved , That after December 9 and until further notice no child shall be re ceived into the Saratoga school unless such child presents either a certificate from ooe of ths committee of physicians named above that be does not need vaccination or a cer tificate from some physician chosen by the child's family to the effect that the child bos been properly vaccinated since Novem ber 25 , 1898 , or a certificate from the health commissioner or some member of the com mittee of physicians named above to the effect that the child has been properly vaccinated since November 25 , 1S98. And bo it Resolved , That the superintendent of In etructton be Instructed to act In like manner In other similar cases in other parts of the city. city. The The Board of Education also passed a rero- lutlon to stop the further dumping of manure upon a lot adjoining the school. Permission to do this was granted by the city council some time ago. The property owner 'has been employing this means of filling his lot. The Board of Health is considering steps to Uolnte cases that nay be discovered in public places. Cases that arc discovered in fmllloB , like those In the northern part ol the city , will be treated at home , but there la at present no place for caring for any one who may possess no home. The health de partment Is thinking of securing an elecuo booth and fitting it with beds and necessary furniture for the care of such cases. Mayor Moorei and several of the councllmen have given City Physician Spaldlng full power to do whatever he considers necessary in such event or In any step bo thinks necessary to take to stamp out the disease. "You cannot warn the people too often to vaccinate , " wld City Physician Spalding tea a Bee representative. "Everybody should consult the family physician regarding this. " The four physicians who were selected to visit the Saratoga school yesterday after noon found that only twenty-five of the 600 pupils in attendance were vaccinated. Con sequently City Physician Spaldlng has sent notlcta to the parents of the other 475 In forming them that their children must be vaccinated by Monday morning. Those whn cannot afford the expense will bo treated free at the school on Monday. All children In the schools , however , must bo vaccinated or else they will not be allowed to attend. The matinee this afternoon and this even ing's performance are the last opportunities of witnessing the highly entertaining and artistic bill put ! on , this week at the popular Trocadero. Seldom docs a coterie of artists achieve such marked success as baa the Akimoto troupe of royal Japanese balancers , > erch climbers , jugglers and acrobats. This itrong company will remain during the com- ng week , appearing la now acts. Pearl Andrews' clever and convulsing imitations must be seen this afternoon or evening. Last Wednesday's matinee at the Crcigh- : on-Orpheum theater demonstrated the fact that tbo current week's bill was a most attractive one. for the juvenile portion of the city's theater goers. Special features were introduced throughout every perform er's act that would especially appeal to the little ones. The Rossow midgets , those tiny artists who took especial pains to please the children there , ihave prepared a series of new surprises for them today. Young Damman , the boy acrobat with the Carl Damman troupe of acrobats , hai also some thing to offer them. Pauline Hall , the peer less prlma donna , reached the city ycstetfay and began active rehearsals of her act. Nearly a score of local singers wore in attendance upon her. Her voice Is stronger , purer in tone and every way better than It over has been before. The collection of costumes she brought with her are hand some and very striking. Miss Hall has ap parently grown handsomer than ever. When last seen in Omaha , a season or so ago with her own company In "Dorcas , " Miss Hall was the favorite of the city's most select circles and to show that they have not forgotten her , when It was learned she was In the city yesterday she was the recipient of many letters of welcome.
