THE OMAHA DAILY HUE : SATURDAY , NOVEMBER 12. 18JKS. COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Tone of the Outside Demand for Wheat Changes and Market Becomes Strong , GRAIN AND PROVISIONS ALL UP A SHADE > IrejfVhent Gain * llnU n Cent , Turn and Onl Clowe lllKlu-r nil ( I I'rorUloii .Market * Liven L'II. CHICAGO. Nov. 11. Near the close today reports of heavy export engagements anil u recovery In foreign markets caused wheat to become subsequently actlvu and strong. Stay closed nt an advance of U < : higher. Corn and oats closed a shade higher. ProVisions - Visions were unchnns'tftl to 2" " ' = c holier. Thu opening trades In wheat Miowoil de clines of M&3-S : , May starting at from C5',4o to 651ic. There wai plenty of news of a discouraging tmturo lo buyers , but the selling pressure was surprisingly light nnd no further decline occurred. On the contrary thn market began to mend shortly titter the opening and though the advance WOK very slow 1'or two hours It was sure. Hngllsh consols wore up 3-lCd and an al most total lack of foreign buying orders was reported from the seaboard. Liver pool , which declined Id yesterday , showed n further decline at the opening hero today of from G-So to Id and London reported cargoes 3S3'd lower. Considering the re cent bad weather northwest receipts were tturprlstngly heavy. Minneapolis and Duluth - luth reporting W40 i.-ais. compared w th 3 012 last week and S21 n yrar ago. Chicago cage receipts , however , were light , 139 cars , though of good quality , -13 being of contract grade. Thu Michigan crop report tald prospects were iieltlom better and gave the seeded area at. 3 per cent larger than last vcar. Notwithstanding this array of bearish news , shorts considered It advls- nblc to take the profits on yesterday's de cline , and their buying soon sf-nt the May jirlco up to Co 6-Sc. For a long time the market hum ? between that figure and iw c. The volumo.of trading was very moderate find fluctuations wre Infrequent until after 31 o'clock , when the tone of seaboard and foreign news changed decidedly for the bet ter and the market here Immediately took notice of that fact. Late Liverpool cables uhowed half of the early decline recovered. Ilcports as to export engagements wrro very conflicting for a time , but the Btcadl- iicsn of Now York convinced speculators that a good business was being done. New Tork finally claimed us high as 120 loads takn at all points. The cash demand hero and at northwest points show improvement. Them wa some talk of a possible nqueezi ; In December at New Vork and this had an effect on local shortB. who covered freely. AH the Hcsslon progressed the demand from horts gradually grew heavier , and after noon trading was quite heavy In volume. Wuv advanced .steadily to COVio and was flrnily held at that price for some time. It was bringing 66 l-8c at the close. Primary receipts were 1,500.000 bu. Atlantic port clearances were 1,220.000 bu. Corn weakened on a decline In cables and the government report , which made the crop 1,027,000.000 bu. There was a good cash demand and a lot of December buying by shippers. There was renewed buying at the decline by leading bull operators and the market became firm later , closing at the best prices of the day. Receipts were light , 198 cars. May ranged from 33 B-8o to 3.IV4 ® B3 3-8e and clofed a shade higher at 33Sc. . Oats was rather slow. Renewed selling by a local long who has been selling heavily of late and sympathy with corn caused a rather xvrakvmarkct early. The cash de mand .was good and when the liquidation was over the strength of carlot prices nnd the advance In other grain markets was reflected by oats. May ranged from 2IB-S WI'Jc to 24'/2O and closed a shade higher nt 24 5-Sj2l.Jc. , Provisions were stagnant. Early there was some weakness with wheat and on lower nor prices. There was some demand from packers , especially for lard , and whorls covered moderately , prices recover ing the slight opening decline. Cash de mand was better. At the close January l > ork was 2'4c ' higher at $3.92H. January lard iiti'-mmgcd at $4. 2'/2 nnd January ribs un changed at $ l.r.74. ! , . . . Wall stieet was rcpurcd for an oulbmst of enthusiasm ovar tccks on the part of the general public \ftcr yesterday's ebullient enthusiasm on lu part of the street Itself. The Grangers , he Northern Pacifies and the leading cuthcru railroads opened high. The pub ic. nnthunlam had apparently Induced to ilnce large orders to buy stocksat the > renlng. The foresight of the largo opsrn- crs In making thu opening level of the market a high one was thus Justllh-d and hey fed the eager demand of outsiders Hilts freely. Prices , however , were fairly veil maintained in the first hour , but In spite of the violent activity of the market t soon became-evident thut the s-upply of stocks was fully equal to the demand , loom traders detected evidences of reallz- ng by large Interests and commenced to jell thu market with finite u marked effect on thn grangers. This had the effect of becking activity and the market full Into dullne. m until It receivi-d renewed impetus from the strength of special stocks. The shorts In Sugar lucame nervous us a roMilt if the high loaning rate for the stocks and overed > ume heavy UUCP , raising the price J 3- ? . Union Pacific preferred was pushed up to C9U , Brooklyn Transit above 69 and People's Gas above 17. Prices generally rose to near the best again In sympathy with thin movement ana Invited renewed buying for outside account through com- nlsston houses. Hut the level was not nnlntalnsd in the last hour , when CHI ! iioncy waHOrmrked up lo 2 per cent and irlccs fell away throughout the list. Earlier trains were practically wlpe < l out In the. Grangers , the Pacifies excepting Union ? aclflc preferred the southern stock ) * t-nd many specialties , Including Federal SUel. Atchlson preferred , which was again the eader of the market , iihowed more sub stantial opposition to tin decline than many ether stocks. Dealing In all of the Atch- son s curltles was on an enormous scale and It was accompanied by reports of the arly entry into the directory of n financial merest largely dominant In Rock Island. Therov was an unexplainsd advance of 2Vi points In Central Pacific which was not 1m- irobably connected with the coincident strength of Union Pacific preferred. Pacific Slall also advanced notably on account of ncreaved earnings. The decline of the last liour was accompanied by increased activ- ty , Indicating a disposition toward liquida tion. tion.Tho bond market was again very active and embraced a great variety of Issues. The Atchison adjustment 4s were , however , easily the leaders , with total sales of a par value of nearly $2,000.000. This bom ? ad vanced 2 per cent to 73U and reacted % In the late dealings. Thu Atchlson general 4s were largely taken. Prices are generally lilgher than yesterday , though the highest of the day were not maintained. Total sales , $9,235,000. United States 5s declined 1-S In the bid price. The Evening Post's London financial cablegram says : The stock markets here opened good early und prices steadily ad vanced until the close , when there was a general reaction , with the exception of Americans , which , after firmness on the election results , closed booming In the street. The buying of Americans today has lieen from the continent for New York nnd by professional cliques here , but , for the first time In some months , the. English public has commenced to buy. This Is con sidered not wholly a bull point , as It Is a , timid public , rendered nervous by political scares ; Money was tighter today because It was Stock exchange settling day. 'The total recelptH for the week to date , as Is shown by the figures above , ars little more than half what they were for the corresponding days of last week and considerably less than half the number reported In three weeks ago. As might bfl expected with such moderate re ceipts , the market as a whole was devoid of Interesting feature. , , as there was not enough of anything to awaken enthusiasm umong buyers. There Were about a dozen loads of corn- fed native steera In the yards and the mar ket on desirable kinds was generally about steady , with yesterday. Shippers are running In a good many unfinished cattle , cattls that have put on a little flesh , but arc not finished and are neither grass cattle nor corn cattle. That kind Is very slow , as no one wants them unless they can buy them at a low price. Sellers who had that kind today called the market lower. Thsro were also some rough western cattle that no one seemed to want on which it was hard to get a bid. There were no grass bojf steers , at least none of any consequence quence , to make a test of the market. There were half a dozen loads of cows and a few scattering odds and ends , which wan hardly enough to make a test of the market. Both cows and hslfers could safely bo quoted as steady. Veal calves were steady to strong- , quite a bunch of fairish calve ? bringing $0.00. Stockers and feeders were In very moder ate supply. Desirable kinds were firm and 25c higher than the low time last week. Common kinds were not soiight after anrt wore about as slow as maial. H Is be ginning to be talked about the yards that the big run of feeding cattle Is over for th ; season. Every one expects that there will he days when the receipts will bo large , but the general opinion appears to be that only a moderate supply Is to bo looked for from now on.
