Both arc Francis Joseph Spring. Ono balls from Fltchburg , Mass , , and the other from Oil City , Pa. The Massachusetts man Is a sergeant of Com pany I. The Pennsylvania man Is a private In Company M , On the papers of both ap pears the same description , as they are aa like as twins In size , build and coloring. The likeness is carried still further on the papers , as under the heading , "Name of rather , " each has entered the name Arthur Spring. There is , however , no relationship between the men. Soon after the regiment arrived hero Sergeant Spring began to gctj very flattering letters from a young lady living in a email Pennsylvania town , also express packages , which were none the less welcome for being unexpected. At the same time Private Spring was deciding that ho must bo a long-distance winner , because a Massachusetts girl was writing to him In n particularly affectionate strain nnd want ing to know if there wasn't something eho could send him. Private Spring thought of a whole lot of things that he could use if ho had them , but as the fair correspondent had omitted to sign her last name it didn't seem feasible to write for them. Presently both Springs began to get letters complain ing that no answers had been received to questions asked in the writer's previous let ters. At the height of the tangle Sergeant , Spring was walking along the road one day when a comrade called his name. Ho and another man ahead of him both walked back asking what was wanted. "Is your name Spring , too , asked the ser geant. "That's what , " replied the other man , "Francis Joseph Spring. " "Well , that's me , too , " said the sergeant. "Say , " ho added , as a thought struck him , "Do you get letters from a girl named Mol- llo ? " " ' " the other "not aa "No , I don't , replied , many as I ought to. " "I do , inoro than I ought to , " said the sergeant. "I guess they're yours. " "I've got some from Sarah that I'll traflo for 'em , " offered the private , grinning. " ' " the Massachusetts "That's a go , agreed man , and all was satisfactorily arranged , except for ! the contents of sundry packages , which had been devoured. Now the two Springs meet every other day and hold a mail exchange. PEACE OMY A DREAM. Hi let Survey of tlif Wnr of the I.ust FlftjVrurM. . Man Is a fighting animal. After 4,000 years , according to biblical chronology , two highly civilized nations , observes the San Francisco Argonaut , have Just been flying at ono another's throats. The most en lightened nation in the world , the United States of America , has been engaged In war , variously stated to bo for "the pacification of Cuba , " "tho freedom of Cuba , " "tho an nexation of Cuba , " "a war for humanity , " "a war to drive Spain out of the weeteru hemisphere" and "a Avar to revenge the Maine. " Universal peace Is a dream of the student and the scholar. That amiable person , Albert , the prince consort who was im ported from Germany into England to con tinue the royal Hanoverian line believed in peace. At the opening of the Crystal Paraco exhibition , nearly half a century ago , lie- told the world that this exhibition heralded the dawn of peace ; that there after the doga of war would never bo let loose. This was in 1S51. Yet In 1854 Eng land waged war against Russia ; in 1850 ho waged war against China ; in 1S5G she waged war against Persia ; In 1&57 eho made blood run llko water in India , cruelilng the mutiny there ; In 1830 Franco , Italy and Austria became engaged in war ; In 1801 the United States entered upon the bloodiest clvilf war ever known to the world ; In 18CG Prussia vanquished AiiHtrla ; in 1867 England began her war agalnet Abyssinia ; In 1&70 Franco and Germany engaged In their bloody struggle ; In 1874 England waged war against the Ashanteea ; In 1879 Russia and Turkey went to war , In 1S79 England began her Zulu war ; In 1882 Engrand bombarded Alexandria and invaded Egypt ; In 1883 Chill and Peru wer at war ; In 1883 the French wore at war In Tonklng ; in 1891 China and Japan went to war ; In 1896 Greece and Turkey were at war ; in 18D8 the United States went to war with Spain. These are a few of the wars that have taken place in the last half century , not to mention the scores of minor warn In half civilized countries like South America , Prince Albert's dream of pcaco has been a bloody one. > You invite disappointment when you ex periment.
