The grave of his father , a banker anti manufacturel of repute in Berlin , was already green when he was born. Ills life is pointed out. as a demonstration of ( ho adage ( lint 'most great men have liati a great mother. This was certainly true in the case of Ebers. To compensate him for the loss of Ills father , whom ho always bitterly lamented , ho was given the uustintetl affection of his mother. Ebers owed a debt of gratitude to this tai- entoil. beautiful anti intellectual woman , who was well known in the lIterary society of Berlin. In his "History of My Life" be pays a well-merited tribute to her who accepted the responsibllty of developing all hIS 3'OflthfUl powers. He says that his mother constantly consoled him for the loss of his father by saying that posthumous children were "favorites of fortune. He first attended Frobei'ii school and later studied law at the Got- tlngen university. where he was setieti with the dangerous illness which almost terminated - minated his life. Recovering somewhat , be was introduced to the savant Lepsius by Jakob Grimm. Lepsius persuaded the young scholar to take up the subject of Egyptoloy. Ehers says , in writing of his own life : "Egyptology not only attracted me , but permitted - mitted me to devote my whole strength to it as far as my health would allow. True. Champollian , founder ef the science , termed it 'A beautiful but ulowerless maiden , ' but I could venture to woo her and felt grateful lit choosing my profession that I could fol. low my inclination without being forced to consider pecuniary advantages. " Ebera made several visits to Egypt after first malcing the rounds of the museums of Europe. During one of his 'visIts ho dia- covered the papyrus 19 , afterward known as the papyrus Ebers , which he published in iSIS in two large volumes. The famous hieratic papyrus and its translation at once raised Ebers to a high place in the world of learning. Although It contalneti mostly medical information of a remote age , it was alao unusually important on account of the insight which it gave Into the language - guage and culture of the ancient Egyptians. Ebers also tllscoveretl the important inscription - scription of the "Amem em Neb. " His signal achievement in translating the hieratic papyrus may be better understood by quoting a short passage in his autobiography - biography : "At this time I bud no die- tionary and no grammar for the hicro- glyphic language save Champollion. Ne Stern had treated Copttc in a really scientific manner. For the hieratic there was no aid save my own industry and the lists I had myself cotnpllei from the scanty lists then at the disposal of the student. Lepsiua bad never devoteil much time to them. Brugach's demotic grammar bati appeared , bitt its use was rendered iliflicult by the lack of ' corriformity between the type and the actual signs. " In 1876 Ebers was struck down by a stroke of paralysis. As a relief from his heavy scientific labors he devoted several months to the writing of the novel , "An Egyptian Princess. " ThIs book created a decided sensation in the literary world , and Ebers at once began to shine there as be had in the purely scientific world. FIbers' novel did not please his friend Lepsiu. The crabbed olil savant said he cotilti not understand how a man of Ebers learning could give 'his time to writing such trash , but FIbers only laughed and said be must do somethiug to occupy his mind. From this time on Ehers' life was one of almost uninterrupted literary effort. In all he wrote seventeen historical novels besides a vast number of treatises , biographies , two great reference volumes on Egypt and a large amount of miscellaneous writings , in- eluding fairy tales , poems , etc. His Egyp- thin novels were strikingly successful , but not more so than several stories written in his later life dealing with medieval life In Nuremberg and other sections' a !
