championship race at a national meet since
1S95 , the start of his career , over four years
ago. Bald was determined and rode the
race of hIs season's career. Gardiner
claimed to have been crowded over the pole
by McFarland , who tonk second to lialil ,
with Freeman third and Cooper foimrth , and
protested the CalifornIan to the chaIrman of
the racing board. The protest was not al-
lowed. In the second day's racing , Kimble
of Louisvihho did nothing and Taylor failed
to qualify for the championship anti for the
great American handicap , in the former ow-
log to being third in 't1e ' slowest heat and
ill the latter owing to the loafing tactIcs
which he and other back marIe men put up.

again failed to show in the races of the
