Andy J. Hunt , the former clerk , was on the stand for several hours irlentifyirig papers ahd vouchers that passed through his hands. He testified that he paid out money on tire order of Sutiborough and that some of it went for political purposes. While subjected 'to dirdcl examiiation hunt testified that- during the campaign when Sudhorough was a candidate for the state legislature the sum of $2,000 waa used to advance his political intercststhre money being that belonging to the express corn- pany. - - At the. afternoon session ox-President Moraman of tire Pacific Express company vaa called as a witness for the state. lie related tire methods employed in tIre conduct - duct of the affairs of the omce , detailing tire tact that T. K. Sutiborough was tire chief clerk in tire auditing department. As such omcial ho approved ccrtaln bills and ordered the payment of money. Moraman stated that during tire cam- paigri when Sudborough was a candidate for the legislature the company contributed 300 or $400 to the campaign fund. So far as he know that was the only money used for' political purposes. Asked about the alleged shortage of Sud- borough , witness said that last spring , when he was president of the company and when Sutbborough was chief clerk , the latter called upon him and in a conversation said that lie was a defaulter.
