CATTLE-The state of the weather was I such as to make cattle look at their wrst. . but in addItion to that the quality of the I Iecelpts averaged up the poorest of the present week. There were practically no I good ttle here , at least none worthy of , mention. For that reason the ale do not . show up well on paper , certainly not as compared with yesterday , when there. were plenty of good cattle here that o1d at $4.0 . I The quality of the cattle and the weather maY he said to have combined to make the general trade a little slow. Still buyers seemed to want handy beef steers and all such could safely be quted steady. Odish cattle. rough and ba.lly branded stuff. w slow and a little easier. and It was rather late before everything was tinally sold and weighed up. The poor quality of the cattle made the market seem lower than it really was and toade the sales look a good deal lower. Cows and helfers are not selling as well as they were a weOk ago. Prices. owing to the starcity. were forced up most too high at this point. or until packers found their cow beef costing more in proportion than steer beef. The tendency during the last few days has been to crowd the market down ha much as possible and the feeling among the buyers is such that had there been anything like a liberal run of cow stahl the market no doubt would have broken badly Still the stu Is selling hich even if the market is not quIte so brisk as it was. Stockers were In very light supply and there were few here to make any test of the market. Even half fat stuff that might be utilized for feeders was scares , so that there was comparatively little doing to the stocker and feeder division of the yards. The demand for that kind of cattle continues - tinues as good as any time and prices strong. Representative sales : No. Av. Pr. No. .v. Pr. No. Av. HOGS-Hogs thowed up welt this morn- Ing. the receIpts being somewhat above the average for a Thursday. At the aame time the demand seemed to be of liberal proportions. so that receipts and detoand were well balanced. Thu shippers were the good buyers this morning ; that is , they had liberal orders and started in early to talk busines ; , setting - ting the pace for local buyers. As to values th market opened just about Sc higher. The prices rang.-.l from 534ej 5 $1.00. as against $3.i55J.s0 for the bulk yesterday. Although htgher , the market was not very active ; on the contrary. the ( ratio was In- dined toward slowness from start to rinish. ThU was owing to the tact that sellers were all asking a little more advance than buy. ers were willing to pay , and to the furthrr ( .let that some heavy local buyers were rather on the bear side. Buyers all seemed to want the hogs , but some of thent did not want them badly enough to pay much of a premium over yesterday's market. Later on , after some of ( he mo.t urgent orders had boon tilled and Chkago and Kansas City advices reported markets clot- log lower , the market here eased off a little. but still the extreme close was not much dIferent ! from the early market. The hugs sold today 5.Ifloa lower than on Monday. jOe lower than on Thursday of I last week , k' lower than the tirtet of the month. but a shade better tsn one month ago. One year ago 1-0.104' the average prics paid for hogs on this market only t37. Repres nlative sales : No .tv. Sb. Ps. No , Av. Sb , Pr. 54..395 53$5 75..1i2 W$25.J 73. . . . . . : : $120 : . These views wi ru 'called ' to the attention of naval otflcilt today and the desire was expressed that the Va- suvids be given a chance to throw .1 few hundred pounds of dynamite Into San'tag. ' . . Some of the naval otilcers think the ue.4it- vius has not trained its suns upon Santece . thus far because of the feeling of danger which is felt in handIla these guns. It. is thought it a shot pierced the Vesuvius anti got Into its dynamite magazine , It 'soukl result In a terrible explosion and the wIping out of ship , elilcers and crew. There Is considerable hesitancy also over drins these huge masses of dynamite. as naval oers believe that it has not yet been pravtel that they will not explode before getting under way. These are the causes leading ' up to the lack of service of the cruiser. There Is a desire. however. to flail out one I way or the other , what dynamite will ac- . compileb In warfare. anti the appeals which have been made , probably will result in i bringing the Vesuvius into the ranks of the tightlog ships.
