Local fans are nt most In a position where whey cnn look with some confidence toward lho future , for IL looks al last ns If Omnhn had a decent sort of a ball term. Unless It Is the w Idu range of teirilury which ho cords , thuru is probably nulling else tint so farr nin ke n fielder ns hla ability to get in wont of and stop the bounders ( lint coma out to hint. Another strength that lens been mulded to the team by ntenna of the nntfulti Is hl the batting flue. All three of the garden men since their acquisition to the local uggre- gnlion have been Inn dlig on thu Lull lu'avIIy numl svaltimig It at opportune perluds. Since they hcod the halting order , they havu hind on eflcet upon the rest of the luau , nu the latter have been landing right moru fre- qucnlly than ever before. The Itttiuld lies been bowlutg along at a fast rata for a long tune new. For the last couple of weeps at Icnst time eastern papers hnvc becu denouumaluig It us one of the fastest in the league. ' ] 'here is a possibility of unproventent if Germany Snillh can be secured for the shortstop position. Smith ranks second to but few In the big league and It Is a wonder that some of the tennis ( hero have not pielmed lam up ere this. At the nunnent when he appeared to he cinched for Omaha , however , enollier bit of hard luck for Manager Fisher appears In lime attempt - tempt of Tim Hurst of tine Browns to secure Linn. Fisher lens not given up hope yet , but tlic Browns' urgent need for a shortstop seers lik'ely to keep the player mrway from Omaha. With Smith at short Boat enld be moved to second base , amid at this shorter throwing dlstmco : ho would do well. Holly could be retained to ploy the utility roles. One of the great advantages to be found in him ( s ( hint lie can catch and in case that McCauley should be laid out or he relieved for any reason , dolly could ably look after the back- slop work. As It Is , however , the infield is not so very slow end is able to stand a comparison - parison with any other In the league. Now that clear sailing seems to be in sight it remains for the local fans to do the rest. They could hardly be blamed for not caring to see a team that did not appear to have gumption enough to play marbles , but now that Prentdent Schuman Is fulfilling his promise to spare no money to get together - gether a winner , it is left for the local fans to see to it that the aggregation does not lack the proper support , If for no other reason than that a ball team is a most excellent - cellent advertisement for a city. And a word of praise should be given to Manager Fisher , Whatever the fans may think of him personally , there can be no doubt that be has worked hard to get up a team that would make some sort of showing - ing in the race , and he has apparently made a success of these efforts. Of coprso , It may he early to crow yet , llut the earmarks - marks are there and they seem to promise that we with not be tailenders much longer. The Babes will be home for n little over three weeks , in which time every team In the ieaguo will be here. After disposing bf IJetroit tomorrow Columbus will come for four successive games. Is 242 558 149 As to bane hilts , the eastern climbs made eleven and n fraction to the game , and the western clubs the same , though In the fig. gregato the west has nine the hest of the argument. In runs the east average four and six-sevenths to the game , limo west five nnll nina-tenths , a most decided disparity when It Is considered that base hilts are nearly equal. In errors the eastern teams have mnnde three to each game , and the west two and a half , another point favorable to the west. In the Western league Indianapolis goes 111)5)11 Its western trip with n good subatan- tinl lend In the mace , but it Is somewhat qucalinnnhle whether it lit big enough to wlthstmnl time assaults that are bound to he mantle ( plan It upon foreign grounds. St. Paul looks to bn ht mach better shape In Its second hole , and it would not he a bit surtirlsing to see it ahead of the Ilooslers by the limo the Saints start upon their trip away. Certainty time Indians - dians will have lu play a hotter Iielding game that they have done In the last two weeks. In the big league there are but few minor chnngcs in line column from what it was a week ago , Cinelnnntl has gone east withn a ulce percentage to her credit and has started omit lu a it ny that gives promise that she will lot part with It very easily. Cleveland , nlthough in second place amid despite the fact that she did so well against the east , is munch utore likely to lose her position. Roston amid New York are the probable u3111iwrs ivilh the odds in favor of the for- mer. mer.The matter of ntlendauce at base hall games Is becoming a question that is sorelyy puzzling the matmgers. It has become so serious that several niluorleagues have gone to the wvall mind here last week time ' \Vcstcrtm association uuule a general cut in salaries to keep its head above hater. The same counplaint is to be henrd in both time national - tional amid the \Vesteru leagues. In the big castaru cities time attentianee has fallen far below the average of the majority of former years. Here in time \Veslern it is touch the sanne'way. It has been wlmlspt.rcd even that the Western magnates Intend to get their meads together and umugurate a lower scale of salaries all along the circuit. They may or they nay not do this , but there would be little excuse for limn. It can be stated as a general proposition tlmt the club owners - ers have been maklug money since the organization of the league. In an off year like the present , they could afford to take In a amaller income o even break oven , for Interest - terest In the sport will unquestionably re- when the war excitement fades away a bit , BLATHER OF THE PUGILISTS Junu parry's Go 11th Casper Loots amid 1Vhat it 3Lq Erentunlly , Lend 'I'o. Jimmy Darry , who Is almost witimmt doubt the premier bantam weight of this country , came within an ace of nnlshing Casper Leon last Monday night in Chicago - cage , although the fight was declared a draw. . The gritles wlmo were In attendance vero generally agreed that If the bout had lasted a half dozen rounds longer , the Itnl- iat would have been out as he was very tired at the windup. Nevertheless Leon was given great credit for the magnificent defensive battle be put up , as lie most sue- cessfully prevented the little Chicagoan trout lauding on a vital spot despite the hard blows that the latter landed. The result - sult of the bout appears to demonstrate o1co more the superiority of Barry to any. hotly in this country in his class , as Casper - per Leon was considered the only man that might be able to give him a tussle. Certain - tain it is that Leon , since his departure for the east n couple of years ago , has won from everybody lie went up against. Barry occupied pretty much the same position in th'o west , - - 'rho main event in New York tomorrow night is a twenty-round go between Eddie Santry and George Dixon at 125 pounds , Santry was the third choice for the bout , Joe Bernstein was to have met the colored boxer in the first placer but this match was declared off on account of some hitch about the weights. Then Solly Smith was picked , but he kicked on Referee White and as Tom O'Rourke has declared that White will be the only referee in his bouts , Smith was dropped , Tlmen Santry was picked up , The latter is expected to make the fight of his life , as a good ahowing against the colored wonder will give him a staudhig he has not yet secured. Ills ahovumg against Solly Smith has given his friends hopes of his being able to do well with Dixon. It is reported that another snatch has been arranged between George Lavigne and Joe Walcott , It is questionable , though , whether such a bout will be a money maker as the two pugs have been agaluet each other too often. A much more interesting fight would be between the kid amid Hack Daly , In his two gas with Lavugoe lime \Vilmnlugton lad has made such an excellent showing that ho given promise of making a splendid fight if a tuateh to decide the question of supremacy between the two should be ever arranged , Immnedlately after time go with Santry , Tomn O'itourka is figuring upon accepting the challenge of lien Jordan , limo English cimamplon featherweight , In behalf of Dixon. Title scrap would practically be a fight for the chaupionship of the world , as the ltn- gllshnmau Is considered about the best that ever was lu his class across time pond , Outside time light classes there is but little excitement in pugilistic circles , Time heavyweights - weights have not been loose during the last week , The principal event among the heavier classes will occur on a week frost tomorrow night , when 'rota O'ltourko will pull Off a bout In New York between Tomnny Ryan and Touimy'\Vest. Jack O'Donnell , a boxer of San Francisco , who Is at preset in the city , has not time highest opinion of the abilities of Jeffrles , who is generally looked upon as time newest star In time heavyweight firmmiammmemit. lie line seen the big boy box and has not gained tlterefron any impression of the shiftiness with whichm he is credited , him speaking about hhn O'Donnell said : "Jcftrics is bik amid be is strong as an ox , but when 1 saw himn he was altogether too slow , lie Is not a good one in foot work anti he is not very clever witli his hands , Altogether. I beiievo that lie would be an easy thing for any tighter near his weight who hams tlio science , lie In just the sort of a roan to de up against it rough-and.tutnble bull tighter hike Sharkey , but I do not believe that with Corbett or Fitzsimmons he could do very much , McCoy is so much lighter that his weight might give him a big advantage , but oven at that it would not be safe to pick time heavy man for the winner , It he lands he lands hard , but lie has not time skill to land right. " The boxers who are In the city awaiting a chance for a match will have an enter. lalnnmcnl on the cooperative plan at Wash. ingloi hall lomnorrow night. it is promised that whine nollilng of a character to offend the city omelais will ho allowed everybody who nlleuds will be given the worth of his money , Thera are four bouts down on the program , one of them at eight rounds amid the other three fit six. The manner in which the Imoys hove been working out gives premIse - Iso that they rill put up a nice exhibition , As they are anxious to stir up enough public Interest to bring them some matches , the event will probably be on the square , READY FOR THE BOAT RACE Cornell , Yale and llnrsnr.I Wfll Trnnnfcr Their Wrangle to time VnIer. After nine months of almost Incessant Intercollegiate - tercollegiate debate the great boat race between - tween Cornell , Yale and Harvard has finally been arranged , it vrill be rowed over the tour miles' course at New London , Conn and will undoubtedly be largely attended. Cornell tnen will be there with no little con- ndenco 1n the ability of their crow to repent time winnings of previous years. rinle men ivtll be there to shout encouragement to Hob Cook's proteges anti with strong hopes of defeating limo victors of 1897. Harvard men are sold to realize that the race will he between - tween Cornell and Yale , but after having studied time English system of rowing , as taught by Rudolph Lehmamm , for another season , line crimson oarsmen pronilso to mnnke things more Interesting than they did Inst year , and should this season row across time fiulsh'line anti not float across it. Yale's improvement wlthut the last few weeks has been marked , anti if my one thinks lint Cornell Is going to have an easy win he is very likely to be mnlslnkeu , itobdrt Cook line been hard at work since time first of the year , not Ims hardly nilsseti a day since then front his pupils , practically removing leis residence from Pilladeiphin to Now Haven. Ile has been ably assisted by Kennedy , the professional oarsman , and they are both now' puttlug time finishing touches oil one of time fastest crews that ever rowed under do blue banner. Hut the critics have been so often misled by reported sickness in the Yale camp ( hint little attentlomt Is nowadays given such statements , especially those lssulug lust before a big event. Time crow ivlll leave New Haven for New London this week , and as most of the men are famll- inr witli the race course , it will not take thou long to get accustomed to their new practice grounds. The crew has been using its nov English shell for about a week. It Is the lightest shell ever used by a Yale crew , and is said to be very "quick , " The squad of 'varsity oarsmen at Yale now Includes - cludes the following coca : Captain Whit- hey , Greenleaf , wilhans , DlcCce , Cross , Nlc deckem , Drock , Wyckes , Flint , Allen , Green. way and Greene , The freshman race mnong the first year oarsmen of Corncll , Yale mid Harvard will be rowed over the two-mile course at New London on June 21 , two days after the big 'vuislly race , Time dispute as to both dates has been happily ended , and the details for line races made complete. Reports from Ithaca and from New Haven are that the freshman crews of Cornell and of Ynlo are fast. Last season Yale had an extremely fast fresimmnn crew , defeating time freshman crews of Cornell and Harvard in record- breaking time. As a result , this year's 'varsity crew is largely made up of Inst year's freshman oarsmen. Cornell this year has a swifter fraalnnan crew than it had last year , and will try hard to win back the laurels lost last season. Iiarvard's freshmen - men are said to be erratic , rowing in good form and fast time one day , and going to pieces time next day. The statement was recently - cently made by a Harvard oarsman that the freshman crew would be either first or last 1n the race. From the reports of the Yale anti Cornell freshman crews it would look cs tlmotigli time Harvard freshmen were pretty sure of the crimson's usual position , DEVOTEES OF ROD AND GUN iltdinn Squad Outlines Its l'rogrnht for n Shoot During the Month of August. WITH HORSES AND HORSEMEN 1'rostiects for time Trolling Meet This Mouth Are Very Bright Just fit Present. Every day the prospects of a big lot of horses in attendance at the light harness meet to be given by the Omaha Fair and Speed association the last of this month and the first of next are growing brighter. Time entries do not close until the night of June 11 , but they are already coming In to Secretary Solomon , During the last week entries of horses from Missouri , Colorado , Illinois and Minnesota have been received. This gives promise tlmat there will be plenty of animals from outside points. This tact alone will warrant good racing , for no horse owner will strip his animals unless he line some horses that are good enough to stand a chance of carrying oft enough purses to make expenses , at least. The track is gettuig into better condition daily. Last week one of AI Patrick's horses worked out a mile 1n something over 2:13. : That is a remarkable record for the present time of the year , particularly as time weather line not been at all such as to permit of much training. With time like this at this advanced period of the year there ought to be some clipping of track records on the girdle during the meet , The street car service that has been promised - ised by the street car company has been put In , and cars now run to and from time grounds every twelve minutes.
