H. L. Simon , who was arrested at Lincoln
last night on a charge of criminal libel fitvorn

Sheriff Cooncy of Dawson county t South
Omaha yesterday morning. At an
early hour the sheriff - and his pris
oner went Into Long's restaurant at
the foot of N street for breakfast.
Simon was ibackled , but before Bitting down
to the table the officer removed the Irceis. At
the conclusion ot the meal and whllo the
shcrlfl was putting on his overcoat Simon
slipped out ot the door without his hat and
escaped. The officer hunted around for hli
prisoner for a short tTme and then gave up
the chose In dl gu < ; t and left for his home.
A description of the cncaped prisoner was left
with the police with the request that be be
arrested If found.
LINCOLN , Feb. 10. ( Special Telegram. )
In order to avoid habcaa corpus proceedings
after arrcfltln/ / ; their men , the odlcors hcnd-

o'clock , when they took the Missouri 1'aclflc
to Union. Thin morning they proceeded to
South Omaha and while they were taking
breakfast ! ci a r'vitaurant Simon walked out ,
eluded the deputy and took the train for
Lincoln , He U now here In charge of the
sheriff , having been subpoenaed before the
grand Jury to tell what ho known about the
recount frauda. I'Mmlslcn'a plan was to get
Simon out of reach of the grand Jury and
the plon liau mlicrably failed.
Deputy Sheriff Cooney came down from
Sout'h Omaha this afternoon to look for bin
rocaped prlnoner , but In the meantime
Simon had been arrested by the city author
ities on a charge of carrying concealed
wcnpoiiK. A continuance ot ten da > s was
taken on the latter ca e , mid Simon was com
mitted to the care of the nherlff , In default

comes up Simon will huvo tcntllloil before the
grand Jury an to thu recount frauds. IMmlnten
mid MM attorney , M. Harrington of O'Neill ,
nay they will taku Simons to Dawnon county
before the grand Jury gctx around to listen
to the Btory. The popocrats openly declare
that Chairman Kdmlstcn has made a bad
political mistake. The affair Is causing
much amusement here.

MANHATTAN , Colo. . Fob. 7. To the
Kdltor of The Hoc : The republican party la
anything but dead In Colorado. During the
campaign In 1S9G the opposition papers at
tint seat of Larimer county said : "It was
cany to tell how many men wanted county
olHccrt in Larimer county by counting repub
lican vote-n. " And , Indeed , It was almost
dangerous In 189C to claim to bo n straight
republican , and a man who had the courage
to proclaim his Intention to vote for Mc-
Klnley wu bravo. Indeed. Tlmo changes
men's opinions politically , an well OH other
wise. Last fall tbo democrats , populists and
Oliver rcpublcaiiB all combined against the
republican party , and , despite all their ef
forts , wo elected the county cleric , county
commissioner and miperlntcndent of schools.
Today , I feel sure , could an election bo held ,
McKinlcy would carry Larimer county. "Let
the heathen rage. " "Tlmo works wonders. "
mid sometimes destruction. Two years ago
Uglify 31. Teller \vas the most popular man

As we said , yesterday , manu
facturers do not go around with a
lantern looking1 for small stores , They seek
those who buy large lots at a time. Our New
York office is daily visited by manufacturers
and their agents ; we get quotations from
everybody who makes goods in our line. Manufacturers -
ufacturers work for our orders , they are worth
working for , competition to get them is keen : ,
if we didn't buy right it would be strange , in
deed. As a matter of fact the most of our
profit is made in buying. Our cash discounts
make a very large item by the year. It is of
ten the case that the shirt , the collar , the suit
of clothes we offer today at retail , we couldn't
duplicate tomorrow at wholesale for the price
you pay. Cash works wonders , Cash at
