Colonel Henry Inmnn , atitlior of "The 0il !
Snrta Fc Trail , " which has boon so favorably
rccolveil by the literary world , Is one of the
few surviving hunters and scouia who were
fninnu. < i throughout thn western country dur
ing the period Immediately following the
civil war. Hip father , Henry Iciman of New-
York , who died In 1SI7 , was a noted rulnter ,
whoso pictures arc still highly prized by all
lovers of art. With something of his father's
passion for the picturesque anil rorr.atitlc.
Colonel Inman early evinced a fondness for
military llfo and the activity ctnd excitement
of the camp and Held. Soon after graduating
from college ho enlisted In the army and
became a model eoMler and ofllcer , partici
pating In many of the battlca of the late
war and closing hie military career In the
subsequent campaigns against the Indians
on the western frontier. During this later
experience , relates a correspondent ot the
Globe-Democrat , he was the Intimate friend
and companion of Kit Carson. Luclen It.
Maxwell , \V. K. Cody and other moled west
erners , and traveled all over the territory
between the Missouri river and the lllo
Grande , meeting with numerous etr inge ex
periences and not n few thrilling and dan
gerous adventures. Co'.ecicl Inman loves to
recount the stories ot his border life , and
among all the recollections of this third of
a century on the plains and mountains none
ire more delightfully vivid to his mind than
ihose cheerful , social gatherings around the
Blazing campflro on a cummer's night , under
bo sclntlllous brilliancy of a starlit mldcontt'-
nent sky , with such associates as the von-
cinblc Carson and the no less famous Max
well.
Colonel Inmans \ familiar with the habits
of the varlotifs animals then to bo found In
the mountains nnd on the great plains , ami
acquired a thorough knowledge of the his
tory of each. In the matter ot strength
and ferocity ho unhesitatingly yields the
palm to the grizzly bear , whoso wonderful
power and remarkable- tenacity of life are
such that ho was always regarded by In
dians and trappers as being tholr most dan
gerous fee , nnd for thU' reason they made It
a rule never to attack one unless backed up
by a strong force of well armed men. Next
to ferocity ho classes the panther , or Cali
fornia lion , which once had an extensive
range on the American continent. Although
Ilon-IIke In color ho In no wise resembles
his Afrlcaoi or Asiatic namesake , but lo more
nearly related to the tiger In his
habits. He Is the puma ot the
naturalists , or American cougnr , and
la really a long-tailed eat the only true
representative of the genus fells on the con
tinent. Ho is a magnificent looking animal ,
with great sleepy green eyes , skin as soft
as velvet , beautifully mottled , and teeth
half an Inch long , as sharp as daggers. Ills
paws measure four Inches across , his limbs
as finely proportioned as a sculptor could
desire , and all his muscles as brawny as an
athlete's. Ills breast Is broad , nnd his
body as flexible as a anakoV ; he Is an active
climber , and ncnorallv drops or snrlncs unon
lila prey from.11 limb where ho lias carefully
concealed himself. Llko the majority of wild
beasts , ho generally runs from man , except
when cornered , or a female Is met with kit
tens then the maternal instinct presents
Itself as strongly as In any other animal.
The cougar attains Us greatest size In the
Rocky mountains , where Its body reaches a
length of four feet and ten Inches , nnd tail
from two to two and a half feet. It and the
grizzly bear are mortal enemies , and In
their frequent single combats the bear Is
not always the victor.
A NI3URASKA TKAPPI3U.
In this connection Colonel Inman relates
n story of a curious slio'j at a panther made
by Jack Huswell. an old trapper , wjio lived
for many years with the I'awness In their
Immense village on the Ilepublicnn , In Ne
braska , long before that tribe was removed
to Its reservation In the Indian territory.
Ho was a famous shot , and when the trap
ping season was over spent all his time In
hunting oik , , bear and deer , which abounded
In the "Dismal River country , " as the cx-
tremo northwestern portion of what Is now
the state of Nebraska was then called.
Ono morning in March , ubout 18C5 , Jack
started out from his camp on a little stream
which ran Into the Republican , to hunt elk.
Thcro w ? . a slight sprinkling of snow on
the ground , which made the tracks of the
animals ho was after plainly visible in the
white rime that covered the earth. After
ho had been out an hour he came upon the
trail of about thirty elk , which he followed ,
hoping to overtake the herd In a short dis
tance. The tracks led him into a small
canyon , not moro than forty feet wldo at the
opening and gradually contracted until It
was less than twenty feetacross. _ It was
very rocky , the ledges forming a series of
shelves which in places were covered by a
growth of cedars.
Duswoll waa walking leisurely along , In
tently watching itho elk tracks , and had ar
rived ot the narrowest part oftho canyon ,
when his cars wore greeted by a snarl , evi
dently emanating from some wild beast.
Looking up , he saw , to Qia ! dismay , a female
panther on a flat ledge under a 'group ' of
the stunteil cedars. The furious animal
was In 'the attitude of springing when Jack
first eaw her , and ho had no tlmo to pull
up his gun or Jump asideSo quick were
the cat's movements tihai she was almost
upon him 'before ' ho could think , her mouth
open ntid her claws unsheathed for busi
ness. With that coolness for which men of
hla clacu were noted , na 'tho ' animal Jumped
for 'him ho held 'tho ' muzzle of his Sharp's
carbine nt such an anglo that when she
reached him ho stuck the rlllo down her
throat and pulled 11m trigger ns she fell
on him. The tihot killed the cat Instantly ,
but. not before she had torn Jack's shoul
ders. rinnlnK the flculi in strlpu from his
arm as aho tuin'bled ' off to the ground. It
was a most remarkable shot , as well as n
lucky one , for wilillo the old trapper saved
his llfo his arm was ) uscleiu forever after.
A TVI'ICAI , FRONTIERSMAN.
"Late one night in the fall of 1SCO , " con
tinued Colonel Inman , "I was ineUted In the
Moreno valloy. New Mexico , on my way
from Taca 'to ' Ute Creek Station , on the old
Santa Vo trail , where I Intended to take
the overland coach next morning for Trini
dad. Jt was HO dark among the ihllls that
I Hcarcely could see my hand 'before ' my
face , yet I believed myself In the vicinity
of Maxwell's ranch , whoso wealthy 'but ' Im
provident 'proprietor I was Intlmaitcly ac
quainted with. I had often visited him ,
and congratulated myrelf that if 1 could
only make his elegant Ihomo In the moun
tains before morning I would find a boil ,
supper and a. hearty welcome. I soon dis
covered that I weu nearer the place than I
hart really auppwexlj for , on peering In the
darkness under the heavy timber , through
Which I was wearily plodding , I suddenly
saw the well worn trail loading to the
ranch from the copper mine on the side of
'Old Daldy , ' and , recognizing certain land
marks , notaibly a projecting lodge of rock ,
und a tall , blasted pineI knew that J was
only a mlle from the mouth of the valley ,

llttlo dllllculty ho once had with two of the

conversation , nnd I will relate the story In
his own language :
KIT CAUSON A..XI . ) TII13 dHIZZMKS.
"H must have beenIn the 30s , as near as
I can remember ; I was trapping with two
partners on the Medlclno How that summer ,
ando had been very successful. At the
close of the season wo started for Hrldger's
fort , Intending to winter with Jim , as he
had Hit ! most comfortable place on the fron
tier In those days. It was to be a long trip ,
as jvo were all afoot , and depending en
tirely on game for our subsistence. Ono
afternoon , after wu had picked out our camp
for the night , leaving the two other men to
II x up our traps , gather wood and make a
lire , I took my rlflo and started out for meat.
1 was n pretty good shot In thoao da > s , and
It devolved on mete do the hunting for1 the
party. A mlle and a half from camp I sud
denly came upon fresh elk tracks there
wore dead loads of that beautiful animal on
the upper trail In those years ; there arc a
good many In the vicinity ot the Medicine
How mountains yet. In what Is now Wyo
ming , but the herds grow smaller every nea-
son , and In a short time they will disappear.
I followed the trail ol' the elk , and soon dis
covered a herd of twenty or more unsus
pectingly feeding In a low graasy bottom
sparsely covered by scrubby pines nnd dwarf
cedais. 1 made for a bunch ot the collars
within easy range of the herd , and got there
bcfoio they were aware of my presence ; but
just as I wa < going to bring my rlllo ti > my
shoulder the leader scented mo , and before
I could draw a bead on one as they stood so
quietly , Hanks toward me. the whole herd
started on a dead run. It was a beautiful
sight to see the males , with their magnificent
antlcis thrown back ou tholr shoulders , teir
through the brush and under the low limbs
of the trees regardless ot the entangling
branches. I3oys , I have always believed n
herd of oik , when they llrst start on that
peculiar trot of theirs , and then change tea
a long lope , one ot the most picturesque
sights In the mountains.
"I knew we hud to huve mcit or go hungry
do bed , aa we hadn't even a jackrabit , so I
t-hougpht I would 'take ' the chance of hitting
* ne of the Hying beiutlffl 'on the wing. '
The elk haJ made tlmo and were a long
\vay off as I raised my rifle and ptillcj the
trigger , but luck wa.s on my side , und I
brought down what I thojght was the largest
and fattest buck In the whole out-fit. Ho fell
on the edge of one of the buiiu'.ics cf timber ,
and as I approached him to cut his threat ,
right in front of me , out of the underbrush ,
came two enormouy grizzlies , snorting anl
frothing , tholr cyca Itaslilnfi ; , ithelr immense
whltoteet'li ' showing cult * > f their turncd-up
lips , anj tholr long , sharp claws stretched
out of their sheaths , ready for business. I
hud no tlmo to think , or to relcad , and wus
badly scareJ. for I dropped my rifle and
fairly flow over the If.tie opening I had
walked ao stealthily a Tow momenta before ,
troyhig to reach a bunch of plnca , 100 yarcla
distant. It wens Mie only ejinco to save
my life , but by another strt-ik of my unusual
good luck I got to It with ihe ; two bears
cloao after me. I caught hold of the- lower
limb of a strong sapling that I knew was
strong enough to hold mo , but as 1 swung
myself Into the lower brancuca ao close wa
ono of the bears that he brushed my leg
and rniulu a grab for me , bu'i. luckily I uas
out of the reach of his ponderous Juws.
The plno on which I wa seated was iwt
a very largo one , but I felt comparatively
safe , as I knew the grizzly to bo a mighty
poor climber the only fear I had was that
dho brutea might keep me In my cramped
pixsltlon nil night , and i hut my comrades
might not llnd me , an I had no gun to lire
for indicating the direction they should tal >
In lain tins me.
TUB UEAIl'S TENDER SI'OT.
"Ono thing I learned during my experience
in the mountains ami on the- plains , nnJ that
was that the bcnr's nosels Iho tenderest part
of his anatomy. I had1 discovered i.his fact
from these that wore pets In many of our
camps , and 'In the small towna en Hie P.iclllc
coast. As sowi , therefore , as I could Ulance-
myself on my small perch I took out my
Icnlfo and cut off u good-slued branch fiom
Iho tree , Intending to use it on iihelr noseu
should they attempt to climb up after mo.
As I suspected. In a few moments after I was
seated and 'tho bears liad taken a survey
of my new position , ono of ; liom , the largi-'at ,
gathered himself for a climb after me ,
but as Oio commenced to hug the Hiiull
trunk of the spllng picparatory to rais
ing himself , I mppcd hbi noao no lively that
ho let go all hold' and dropped down to tlio
grouivl aa If ho had been shot , smartlne
and howling with the pain 1 had tall I clod.
The other , after gazing in wonder at the
strange antlca of hU ma to , thought he would
like to try It. Ao ho started up I treated
him In the same manner to a good rose
lashing , and back he went. After a breath
ing spell they commcniepd their taetlca again ,
making the most dcapnrato struggles to pull
me down. I thrashed their noses every
tlmo they came up , and once I hit one ao
hard that ho actually cried like a baby ,
dropping to Iho ground , a tllntance of flvo
feet , where he rolled over and over In his
terrible pi In. At laat they grew tired of
tholr game und gave It up , The biggest
fellow started away , toward the- timber , anil
the other followed In a few mtauim I was
afraid to come down from my perch for a
long time , but when I did I Immediately
reloaded my rifle , and then felt Kifer In the
event of further domonxtPUlacH being made.
I did not get back to camp that night until
long after dark nor did WB have meat for
supper , for the bears found the elk I had
shot and picked his bonca clpju ,
MAXWICLL AND THK PANTHER.
"It was very late when Kit Curaon finished
his iitory , but late hourt worn the- rule at
the ranch , and wo were determined to hear
our ho3t'8 famous adventure with a cougar
befuro wo retired to our couch of buffalo
ra'jca. Maxwell was always n willing ra
conteur , never reticent like Kit , and com
menced at coco :
" 'In the spring of 1851 I was down nn the
Arkanraa , near the Cliiiarron crossing , to
bring up a herd of horses that had teen
driven from Fort Leavenworth to Fort
Urldgcr , where a regiment of United States
dragoons were camped , walt'ng for a now
mount before commencing a campaign
against the Utro , Who'had been deprt'datli , ) ;
In the northern part of. Now Mexico. I hart
with me a party of Mexican hordem ami
three American ? , old trappers , who wan'eil '
to go up to Krenchmr-ci's Creek , where their
cjmp was located. W arrived -u the foot
of the Spanl'-U Poilts without any adven
ture worth mentioning ; had splendid hunting
for our nmuxeim-nt for game wan abundant
then iho country had no Hettler * . r d dfer ,
ell ; , bear and other aniir.aU fairly Infcuteil
thn whole region.
" 'One afternnon I took It Into my head
to rldn a fi'-v mile * off the trail to examine
( liu lay of ( he land and the creeks that run
Into the Arkansas , na I Intended to trap In
that vwlnlty with n partner who was to
meet mo at the Pueblo In aboot a month
after I had delivered the horses at llrldger.
1 followed the old trail load Ing north ta
the Platte for nbout throe miles Ahead of
tlio 'herd1 , then struck Into the hills at thii
mouth of a small stream , on which I felt
satisfied I should find a good many heaver
iliuis. I suppose I must have ridden on
through iho timber almost always straight
we t for more than an hour , when I ar
rived at one of the biggest dams t li.lil
over seen. 1 got off my home to examine
the ground moro closely , tying him to a
sapling , while I went on foot along the edge
of the water to sco 'if 1 could discover .signs
of anybody having tt.ippci ! ' In that region ,
I had proceeded In this way for n quarter
of a mile , perhaps , from where I had left
my animal , when I heard a strange sound
like the soft purring of A eat. Looking up
Into a huge mountain cottanwood there In
the brunches right over my head , stretched
out on a limb of the tree , not twenty feet
from me. was one of the biggest lions 1 have
eu-r seen. The beast was watching mo
wely , his big eyes ablaze , and fcr an Jn-
slant 1 was somewhat startled. I stood per
fectly still , contemplating the vicious brute ,
when , suddenly , as quick as lightning , ho
changed his attitude from lying lazily on
the limb into ono of more threatening
an-oct. assuming a. decidedly catlike posture ,
his long tall commenced to oscillate slowly ,
plainly Indicating Hint he was preparing to
spring. All this took less time than the
telling of It. I knew I hadn't a moment to
lose ; It was cither the Hun would get mo or
I must get the lion ; so I pulled u\i my old
rlflo mighty quick iml blazed away. The
ball went exactly where I Intended , right be
tween the creature's eyes , hut the effect
was entirely oppcsltc of what I nntlrlpated.
1 expet'tcd , of course , to see the beast come
tumbling out of his perch dead nt my feet.
He dU ccme down , but not dead by a go'd
deal , The ball had somehow glanced off
his skull his 'head must have been harder
than any lion's I over saw , or my charge
w.nn too email to make- the bill outer h.s
brain.

under the side of the log , and , fortunately ,
by poll I UK my he.id close up to It , I could
keep the brute from biting my face. I was
dcessed In a buckskin suit ; a heavy shirt , cr
ruiMoi' coat , nllh a long ecio : of the same
material , trousers f buckskin , and all new ,
so that the ela\uj of the beast did not tear
