A herder In charge of a ( lock of 2,000 sheep
which \vo-o grazing near tlio liaso of the San

by lightning during a terrific storm which
visited that section about the 1st of August
As the herder was not expected to como In
with Ills sheep until the 1st of October , re
lates the San rranclsco Call , his absence
duiing ( August and September attracted no
attention. When the mi'Jdlo ' of October caano
and ho did not shovs up , messengers wore
( ent out to find him.
After a seared of some daja In the vicinity

c-amp iwero ifound under a 'tree ' which had

utensils were scattered about , and the re
mains of a blanket were found , which were
identified as iparts of ono which the man lud
taken with him , The water keg also was
recognized by a mark whlc'h ' had been burned
Into cno ot the staves ,
A further seacch revealed the bones of a
human being scattered about over the

fiom the tree , having evidently been carried
about iby wolves A iprospcctor who had
passed that wAyihad caaiped fora night with
the man about the 1st of August , and ald
the lierd was then 'moving ncrthward. Tbls
itreo around which these articles .were found
was Juat about far enough north to have
been the next camvplng place , and when It
was retneci leered 'that there was a severe
storm of thunder and lightning In that sec

was clear that 'the ' cuan had made his camp
under this tree anil had he-en killed by light
ning and Ills body devoured by wolvefl. The
sheep had never been lieanl of , and no trace
of them could too found anywhere lu that
part of the countrv.
But now comes the strange part of the
story. About two weeks ago a herd of atout
2,000 sheep was found on the plain la San
Miguel county In this territory , with no ono
In charge of them , and to all appearances
belonging to nobody. The parties In Arbona
heard of tula fact and wrote to an officer
in this territory , giving tholr marks and ex
plaining how the sheep could bo Identified.
Itwas found beyond any doubt that this
was the 'herd that had disappeared from
the range In Arizona about the 1st of
August. The animals had been shifting for
tbeinEelv.es for more than 'three montha , anfl
turned tp at a point fully 500 miles fro-m the
place , -where the herder was killed. They
had crossed the lllo Grande on the way
of CimiiJrlrx.
