Wall street has not neen such a dull day In many months. Kven tha professional traders were almost out of the market nnd then ! was absolutely no outside In quiry or sign of Interest In the market. A large proportion of the diy's trading wns In Sugar nnd this stock felt away nt one time 2S points , but closed Pi per c nt nlnve th-it. The rally wns due to n ruling by the Treasury department to apply the countervailing duty clause of the tariff bill to refined sugars Imported from Den- matk. The nmount of sugnr available for Im port from Denmark I * not In Itself large , but the treasurer's decision was regarded ns Indi cating n course likely to be pursued In regard to Dutch rennet ! sugars , of which the supply nvull- nbe ! for Import Is large. T.iU rally In suitar helped the market samewhat and was almost th5 only Indication of real stiength In any stock throughout the day. In the ckulng transactions Suquehnnna & Western preferred suddenly mounted up to 3IH , n net rise of 2 % per cent , nnd the bond * f that coil showeil some sharp gains. No effect was exercised on t'lf general mntket by this. Northern Pacific preferred was relatively llrm In the railway list on account of the Increase In earnings shown by Its llrst week's statement ot $19.1 CSC , or 43 per cent over laut year. List year's earnings for the same period were not large , but the showing was n strong one never theless. People's Gas , which was dealt In ex-dlvldend of Vs per cent , wan n center of depression and clo cd a point lower. The coalcra we'c also weak. New Jersey Cen tral rmst consplcuovuly so , falling at one tlma 2'j points , but rallying n fraction. Consolidated Ois made one of Its characteristic slumps of 0 points to ISO. This was 8 points lower than the previous low point of the present movement. Thestovk rallied 1H per cent nt the close. The heaviness nnd ilullnem of the market were partly In sympathy with London , where the ptlces of securities showed declines on ac count of some apprehension over European poll- tics due to threatening conditions on the borders of Turkey. There wns some disappointment over the failure of the supreme court to hand down a de- clslon In the Nebraska maximum freight rale ctne before Its two weeks' recess. Closing prices are considerably above the low est of the dny In mo t stocks , but the general list showed net 'losses of n fraction exceeding * .i per cent In most cases. Some selling for Ism- ilon account added to the weakness The total pales of all stocks was less than 1SO.COO shaies. of which Sugar contributed almost one-fourth. The bond market was dull , but prices were firm. Total sales , } 1.32. . Of 0. United States 5s coupon were vt per cent higher , bid. Only about a eiozen loads of cornfed beeves were on suie and for the reason that the supply was so small desirable kinds sold at about steady prices. Tlu more common kinds , and rough were alow and weak. Chicago reported large receipts , with the market fully 10c and In some cases 20c lower , so that had there been many cattle here the market would undoubtedly have been lower. The buyers were not long In nlckliiK up the best loads , but some others did not sell quite so readily nnd It was late before a cle-arance was effected , In spite of the few cattle on sale. Butchers' stock was also In llRht supply , only about a dozen loads ot cows and heifers being on sale. The market was reasonably active and an early clearance was effected , the best kinds bringing steady prices , while the ICES desirable stuff was s'tockers and feeders were in fair supply , but there was no prcat number of good light cattle , which is the kind most In de mand. The market on the most desirable kinds was , if anything , a little stronger and the offerings were for the most part taken early.
