    THE OMAHA DAILY 1VEE : SUNDAY , OCTOBER 10. 1W7. *
I AMUSEMENTS. f ,
Tlio pact week at the thcatcm has afTonlc-
Hi im'rotiR a little of cvcrylhlnR except
tragedy and has bCen altogether one above- -
the nvcMgo In merit of the performances
presented. Opening up with a rattling farce
F at one house and a play with a Trench flavor
nt the other , It closcil with the first appear
ance of spectacular for the season at the
Crclghton , whileilarltncns reigned at the
Jloyil ,
Doth of the opening hills came her
alded by successful debuts In the PASI anil
both ran be said to have coma up to tb
expectations of patrons of the theaters ,
"Ne\er Again , " it.irtlng on Sunday night
at the Doyil , remained half a week. Like
practically all plays to which attach the
color ot France , suggestions of violations of
the seventh commandment constitute the
theme around whlih It li , constructed ,
though the Implied Immorality la forced tea
a minor place In the mind of the auditor
by ludicrous situations In which the chief
actors In the drama find themselves. Though
not presented by the same cast which first
made it a success , and which was composed
of many of the most prominent people In
the profession , It w.is vcll staged , and the
company was of exceptionally uniform merit.
"Miss Francis of Yale , " which commenced
Cunday at the Crclghton and continued the
first half of the Week , Is a roaring fa roc ,
with somewhat the savor of "Charley's
Aunt , " and In which Qlrardot and Capp , two ,
of the best of the comedians ot the day , were
Jn the catt. Fun reigned from the rising of
the curtain until It xvas rung down , on the
closing scene.
'Following "Never Again" at the Iloyd came
Clay Clement with his new play , "A South
ern Gentleman" and the over charming "New
.Dominion. " These who liavc heard him dur
ing his previous visits ? knowing the ploRauro
that was In store for them , tame again. , and
to IhesB wcro added many who came to sco
what manner ot mm It was who Inspired
siicli warm commendations from these > who
bad heard him. ' "Iho Southern Gentleman , "
while na \vhOlo is gooJ , Is hardly the cijual
of the play In which ho scored his first suc
cess. Its most stirring climax Is the pro
logue , and this presents him In a light to
tally \nrlinc3Wllh the clarcter developed
In the play Itself. Divorced from the Incon-
Ktully of the prologue , "The Southern Gen
tleman" Is a charming production and Its
Interpretation well worthy of the reputation
of Mr. Clement. In the "New Dominion" he
was as Interesting1 as of yore.
"Tho White Crook , " which was at the
Crclghton Thursday and Friday , has no vis
ible excuse for being. It Is simply a con
glomeration of variety without single brll-
1 la nt turn In the bill.
The week wound up with the lultlil per
formance of the spectacular for the season
Charles H. Yale's "Twelve Temptations. "
CiiniliiK HtnlN. .
"Under the Red Kobe , " which will be at
Doyd's theater on Monday , Tuesday and
Wednesday evenings , with a Wednesday
matinee , by a company under the direction
of Chailes Frchmnn , Is an adaptation by Urao
of Stanley Wcyman's novel of that name.
Iho action begins In a Paris gaming-house ,
where a young swashbuckler fights a ilupi
with an Englishman and wounds him. Car
dinal nichclicti , who has made a law against
dueling , enters upon the scene and sentences
the victor to death , but spares Ills life with
a stipulation that he shall devote It to the
state's Ecrvice. The duly which the cardinal
Imposes upon the lighter Is Ignoble and
purlieus , as it Is the capture of a rebel noble
man In the Pyrenees. The joung man starts
on his heartless mission to the nobleman's
chateau , going In the guise of a friendly
visitor there , only to become enamoured of
the host's sistjr and to be transformed by
love from a spy to a most loyal and devote I
lover. The costumes and scenery of olden
Franco are shown. Mr. Krohman's company
Includes among Us leading mcmbcrn William
Morris and Mary Hampton , actors who nil
the principal roles. The music to "Under
the Hed Robe" is entirely original and the
compcoltlon of W. W. Furst of the Empire
theater , where the play held sway for 300
nights during last season.
"At Gay Coney Island" will be the attrac
tion at Doyd'n thin afternoon and tonight
anil at the Crclghton Monday and Tuesday
evening ! ) . The play 1 In three acts , each
of which Is handsomely staged and set in
specially prepared bcenery , reproducing , It
Is said , as near as may be , the actual scenes
In and about Coney Island. There Is a unique
story , based upon the will of an eccentric
millionaire , which contains a clause provid
ing for the unheard of condition that hh
beautiful daughter will Rccuro a husand and
become a widow before any part of the
testator's wealth shall be handed over to her.
The young woman marries a man who re
fuses to dlu. Through this embarrassing sit
uation nriao the complications and humorous
features which go to make up the dramatic
portion of the entertainment. Innumerable
specialties arc Interspersed and original and
catchy music abouuda throughout the per
formance.
The Crelghton announces for Thursday ,
Friday , Saturday and Saturday matinee
lAndrow Mack In "An Irish Gentleman. "
Andrew Mack Is not fotgotten here , although
It Is several years since his last visit , when
ho appeared with Fanny Hlce , and when he
cane "Molly O ! " In a way to make himself
remembered. During his absence ho is said
to have come rapidly to the front as a star
The new play , which was especially written
to lit Mr. Mack's requirements , Is called "An
Irish Gentleman , " and , as Indicated by the
title , Is a departure from the many plays
depicting lifo In Ireland with which the
Etago has been flooded for a number at
years. The author has done away with the
corduroy kntckerhockcrcd peasant boy wiiom
tbo theater goers have seen season after
ecason , and In his stead has drawn a young
Irish gentleman , reckless , careless , witty
and sentimental , but a gentleman always
and with all tbo winning qualities which arc
usually associated with the best types from
the Emerald Isle. During the course of Ilia
drama bo will Introduce a number of new
tongs , Including "Tho Irish Street Singer , "
"My Sweetest Girl. " Mack's "Dove Song , "
and "My Heart's Delight. " "Molly 0" will
bo given by special request. Tao action of
"An Irish Gentleman" takes place In tliu
neighborhood ot the lakes of Klllarney , and
the hero Is a ) oung fellow , calling himself
Jack Shannon , who , although a perfect
clrcnger , has , through a faculty of mail In 4
friends readily , obtained the position ot
steward on a line old rotate , This accom
plished , ho proceeds forthwith to fall In love
With his employer's daughter. At this point
a former chum of Shannon's , who has devel
oped Into a scoundrel , appears on the scene ,
end becoming desperately smitten with the
heroine , proceeds to ruin Iho young fellow
by means of his knowledge of a ccitaln paat
transaction wherein the hero , although Inno
cent , has made a written confession of guilt.
Things drift along until , by a strong and
deftly woven chain of circumstantial ovl-
denco , the crimes ot both forgery and theft
are fastened upon him. Then , through a
erics ot novel surprises , his complete Inno
cence Is established , and ( ho play ends hap
pily. Mr. Mack'a supporting company In

Human greatness Is certainly one of na-
titra's mysteries. What Is the strength that
raises ono man above his .fellows . and makes
him their acknowledged leader ? What was
It that made Hccthovcn able to read the
human soul and reveal Its Innermost longIng -
Ing In muslj ? What was that that made
Goethe's Insight equally penetrating and jet
caused him to choose words as his language ?
What la that that causes the painter to KCO
In the relationship of lines and the blending
of colors the consummation ot beauty and
clory ? What made Peter the Apostle march
to martyrdom the conqueror of Koine and
of the world ?
Can It bo that thoie Is one answer to all
these questions ? Inctilratlon ! Well , what
Is Inspiration ? In Peter the Christian will
say It was the direct power of God ; In
Ueethovcn It was the power ot genius. Then
comes the question : Whence Is genius ? Is
It human , or more than human ; Is It the nat-
ualworking of the soul In relation toother
souls , or In relation to the soul of the world ?
And If In relation to the soul of the world ,
wherein docs It differ from the Inspiration of
Peter ? Is It not possible that all souls are
In close communion with their Creator , hut
that many know It not ; just as ono blind
may stand In the piescnce of a beautiful
nalntlne and see It not , and as ono deaf may
bo surrounded by sweet music and hear It
not ? May It not bo that genius Is n soul
more perfectly attuned to the harmonics of
the world-soul seeking expression In Its own
peculiar language , loving the world and man
and striving to reveal the hidden beauties
of which It Is so clearly conscious ?
May It not bo that there Is genius In all
of us. If we will only look up , Instead of
down ?
May It not bo that r.e are so small be
cause wo are so chut up within ourselves ;
so unwilling to be Insptied by the g cat as-
? lratlons of humanity and by the possible
? lorloa of Its Intended destiny ? How many
llttlo people there arc who are utterly self-
contained , but who might bo great by the
aid of their fellows. Complete dependence
and complete Independence are alike con
ditions of weakness. The admiration of
greatness develops greatness ; the Influence
of genius reveals genius ; the contemplation
of Iho source of Inspiration Is an Inspiration.
* *
It has been said that genius Is ono part
talent ami nine parts work. TrueIt Is that
many of the world's great were born very
small. It Is the misfortune of the most of us
that we alvvajs remain small. To begin lifo
amid disadvantageous , conditions Is no grounj
for blame , for wo may not chocse our begin
ning. IJut after wo ale in the world we are
the arbiters of our own destiny to n % ery
Rre at extent. Handel's father was a barber ;
Ills mother the daughter of Iho town pastor.
Chorublnl's father was harpsichord accom
panist In n theater In Floicnce ; he was born
In n cottage. Rossini's father was town
t'umpetcr and crier at Uavenna ; his mother
was an opera singer. Beethoven's father
waa a tenor-singer In a chapel In Bonn' ' at a
salary of $ inn ajear and was an Intemperate
good-for-nothing ; his mother was the
daughter of a head cook. Sehuman was the
son of a clergyman and was designed for a
commercial career. Hajdn's father was a
wheelwright In the little village of Rohrau ;
his mother was the daughter of a cook.
Schubert's father was the parish school
master at Llchtcnthal ; his mother was a
cook. Cooks have always been popular with
musicians.
What advantages could these parents have
given their children In any age or country ?
How llttlo did they give them In n countrjl
where noble birth counted for everything ?
Yet these children gave the world Its' great
est art If there be a greatest art and have
loft names that even time cannot obscure.
Mozart , dying a pauper , gave to humanity
a requiem for the dead that almost reveals
the pathway that leads to that far country
beyond thegrave. . Beethoven died planning
a tenth symphony ; Haydn regretting that ho
could not llvo to carry his beloved art on
to yet greater perfection ; Wagner planning
a muslo drama which should reveal id us of
the Occident the character end life of Buddha ,
the. morning light of the orient , the first to
preach the doctrine of unlvcisal brotherly
love.
These men had no time to kill. Ono can
make friends and money and everything else
that he nerds or wants , but he cannot make
an 'nstant of time. He who kills time has
lived long enough. Look at Paul as ho faces
death ; hear him say , as thirty years oD toll ,
privation and suffering are approaching their
end : "I have fought a good fight ; I have
finished my course , I ha\e kept the faltb.
Henceforth there Is laid up for me a crown
ot righteousness. "
Work Is about the only thing that Is sure
to accomplish results In music or out. of It.
It Is ono of the wonders of the world to the
musician how and wlum Bach wrote down all
the music he composed. H bccius Jo If the
period of a man's life Is iot suflicleiit fo <
merely making the notes. It has been salci
that It would take a cop } 1st a lifetime to
rewrite his compositions. Yet Bach was oue
of the greatest organists of his time , drilled
and conducted a church choir , played the
violin , gave lessons , was twice married and
raised thirteen children.
Mozart died when he w < is 35 years ot age ,
yet ho composed forty-one symphonies ,
thirty-one serenades and divertimentos for
orchestra , twenty-one overtures , seven or
eight operas , ten concertos and other pieces
for violin with orchestra , nine qulntctes for
string Instruments , twenty-seven string quar
tets , twenty-eight concertos for the piano
with orchestra , sixteen masses , about sixty
arias and part songa with orchestral accom
paniment , about fifty separate pieces for the
Catholic church service , a largo number of
cantatas and a still larger number of mis
cellaneous pieces for various combinations
of Instruments. Besides all his work of
composition he waa one of the finest pianists
of his time and made several concert tours
throughout Europe. Remember , he died
when ho was :15 : years old.
There are In ( his city those who pretend tea
a lovn of music end to a desire to become
proficient performers and whoso time Is al
most all their own , who cannot find tlmo for
more than nil hour of practice each day.
There are these who liavo ability enough to
become artists , but who arc such enemies to
work that they will never amount to any
thing. They torment themselves and their
friends with vain wishes for ability and
skill awl waste their time and poUon their
natures envying these who , by work , are
maKIng life a success. The year Is young
jet , the opportunity Is to hand , persistent
effort has made many great ; It will continue
to do so. Omaha's real musical greatness
will bo accomplished by her own people. By
their talent developed by Industry will she
shlno. The talent Is here ; It Is tlmo for the
Industry ,
The most Important musical event of the
past week In this city was the organization
of the Dcrthtck Musical-Literary club. U
wus and la Important becaueu It is a power
ful educational Institution that will do much
for the cause of good music , and because It
fills a vacancy not occupied by the ordinary
xan of music lessons. To understand music
ono must have a fensrltlve Imagination , able
to help the composer draw pictures. Music
Is more ( ban a mere succession of sounds ; It
Is as the throbbing of the human soul , made
Jn the Imago of Goj , and , by Its throbs , pic
turing the whole world of experience , The
jnuthod ot music study Included In the Dei-
Ihlck system develops and directs the Imag
ination and thereby makes successions of
sounds represent and recall successions of
experiences.

Is not unlikely that she will be heard In
Omaha. No American singer of late years
has scored more thorough success at homo
and abroad than Mme. Flsk. She possesses
a grand mezzo-soprano voice , especially fitted
for dramatic roles , and her most pronounced
triumphs In Europe were made with the ex
acting music of Saint Sacns' "Samson and
Dllllah. "
The musical world was recently startled
by the news that Richard Strauss , director
of the opera at Munich , had resigned his po
sition and engaged to take a. similar post at
Hamburg. It turns out that ho and Hcrr
Poasart , general Intended ! , wanted to oust
Herr Royal Intendant Perfall an old-timer

bluff. The prince regent called It and > oung
Mr. Strauss will stay In Munich , take lessens

and Instructive essay on the manner in
which a valid will should bo made , de

program which was good from start to
