original grant.
The book committee reported bick the com
munication of the librarian is Uh reference to
the Inventory which had been nude , finding
the same substantially correct , and tccum-
mendlng that future statements of the num
ber of books In the library distinguish be
tween the number of books accession ? ' ! , and
the number on. the shelves as ahown by the
Invcntoiy The accession number Is about
54,000 , whllo of these , deducting the book :
lost , destroyed , woru out and discarded , about
48.000 arc on the shelves.
The book committee also made a report on
the loss of books In the recent Hces fl'e , ac
oompanled by a conimunlratlon from the Hces
company , agreeing to malto good the value
of thu books dratrojed. On recommendation
of the comuiltteu It was ordered that parties
doing binding for the library bo notltled that
they will be held resmnalblo for loss or
destruction of books In tnelr custody , ami
that they will bo expected to protect them
selves In their own Insurance policies The
final settlement for the burned books was de
ferred until the actuil loss could be definitely
appraised.

The now Crolghton Medical icollego at
Fourteenth and Davenport streets was for
mally opened to the public last night by a
reception which was tendered by Mr. John
A. Crelghron and the members of the fac
ulty to several hundred Omaha people rep
resenting the leading pivofesslonal and social
circles The Interior of the handsome build
ing was seen for the flist tlmo by a ma
jority of those who thronged Its corridors
between S and 11 o'clock , nnd the elaborately
finished Interior appeared to excellent ad
vantage under the blaze of electric lights ,
and adorned with a profusion of flowers aud
potted plants The guests were received at
the east entrance by members of the rq-
ceptlon committee and during the entire
evening the entire lower part of the build
ing was crowded. The Sutorlus Mandolin
club , assisted by Miss Pauline Lowe , dis
coursed music throughout the evuitng and
light refreshments were served In the stu
dents' reading room. Those who with their

As W. W Buford , coloied , of 2120 Sahlor
street , an emplovo of the Carter White Leaa
works , was returning home last night , he re
ports that ho was assaulted and robbed ot
his week's wages amounting to about $10.
He had alighted from the street car at
Twenty-fourth street and had gene a short
distance up Sahlor stieet when ho mot three
men. Just as ho was pissing them , Buford
saya , one of them stiuck him on the head
with .1 heavy weapon 'Buford ' fell , severely
stunned , and the men took his money and
hurried away Shortly afterward he was
