COMMERCIAL AND FINANCIAL Wheat Again Takes On Strength and Gains Nearly a Otnt and a Half. ORN AND OATS EACH LOSE A FRACTION l > rovMotiM Clone ; Jlllnlitly ( live the IHilU Their Chief Source ot I'imrr. CHICAGO , July 19.-The bulls In wheat to day more tlmn recouped Saturday's loss. September closed 2c from the bottom , n gain of I'&c ' for the day. Corn nnd oats each lost tic. Provisions were 24' ! 5c higher nt the close. The Liverpool quotation , which had been the main source of strength to the whcnt nun ket. won reported IVid lower this mornIng - Ing , iiml Chicago had llfty-clBht carloads of wheat inspected Into store since Saturday morning , flfly three of them from this year's crop. These were the reasons of nn opening decline of from Uc to Vo Indicated. The total receipts ut the live principal winter vvluat nmrkets amounted to 347'Jlfl bu. , of which 211,000 fou. werv reported from Kansas City. Last year on the corresponding day the receipts ut the same live cities were 400,1179 bu. , W ) that the deficiency between the prcfent and previous season Is not now of thu movement very striking. That feature ment should change rapidly from now on. It Iswith that expectation that gome bear ish feeling If developing among leading speculators , which would quickly become very aggressive with a little encouragement In the way of weakness abroad. Thu visible Httpply , which was expected to show about COU.WJ bu. reduction .It creased ] ,2S.iOX ) fou. . leaving thu total at l.VKM.wo bu. , compared with 4fi.74t,000 : fou. last year. The amount afloat for Hurope Is l.'JOO.WJO fou , smaller than U was a wtek ago. IK-erfoohm's reported u total reduction for the week In European stocks of 2,01tiono bu. , Indicating about j- 000,000 bu , as the total reduction In the world's stocks. The exports of wheat and Hour from Atlantic ports since Saturday were equal to 340.000 bu. The decrease In the visible exceeding expectations , und some spring wheat being taken ncre for Imme diate export , caused a change In speculative iHilitlment. The tendency had been down ward during the greater part of the fore noon and short sellers sold confidently on every rally until the matters last referred to brought support to the bull side of ii Htrong enough character to turn the bulk of the locai crowd from the bear side. Most of the buying was on weak spots nnd there was enough of It to absorb the floating Fcalplng supply nnd turn sentiment from felling to buying. September , which got down to G9'&c In about nn hour from the start recovered to "OVic. dropped again to GS'dc and once more started upward , reachIng - Ing 70-/ic. Cablegrams from 1'arls quoting that market excited from speculation and Jioor threshing returns had some effect In Jiclplng the advance In the latter part of the session. The French crop where It Is most plentifully produced Is not ripe yi-t. The price here became still stronger toward the end. September wheat opened UHi'itC lower at RaiivG'Ji&e , sold from G'J'lc to ( J'J4c , back to G'J\r. then up to 71',4c , closing with Eellers at 71'c. Corn was moderately active nnd inclined to follow the direction natural to good re ports concerning the progress of the crop rind the Increasing receipts. The afternoon firmness In wheat was the reason for a recovery of about half of an earlier He de cline. The receipts worn 719 cars nnd 1,000 nre expected tomorrow. The amount on ocean passage Incre.iped G40.000 bu. since Jlonday laEt , but the visible supply de creased 2T ! , ( XJO bu. , leaving I.I.IOO.OOO bu. as the amount now In fight. The visible a year ngo was S.GCC.OOO foil. After the first hour corn followed the course of .wheat. Septem ber opened from 26c to 27c , against 27i- on Saturday , declined to 2G ! < .e , rallied to 2CT4e at the close. The market for oats was moderately active and steady. Local bears were fair pellem and elevator people did the most buying. Prices had a small range and the advance In wheat detracted from the market and there wero-no Important devel opments. Receipts were 310 carp. The visi ble Increased 54 000 bu. September opened iv shade lower at UftiiTlSp , sold at 17-y4fr ( lic and ISc. closing at 17c. Only 23,000 head of hogs In today's run. In stead of 3T,000 head as estimated , started provisions strong , and the firmness at the beginning was fairly well maintained In the face of some quite general Belling of small lots by packers.
