THE O1SEAIIA SUKDAY , MAllOIl I V ? . . IN SACKCLOTH AND ASHES Society for a Season Puts on the Qfttb o Accentuated Woe. PRETTY FAREV/ELL / GERMAN AT HILLSIDi Fop Forlr nnr * Hie IIccillcnK Mnr At- ttine Their MliitU to Oilier Theme * Tlinn Tlione Ilolntliisf to Mmulune Tha lentsn curtain ha desccuJcd upon th < miscellaneous and assorted frivolities of th < racial season , ana the swimmers with tlio cur. rent of faabloniiblb observance may now foi uf tlio rctardot a llttlo season take advantage flow ot events to rc t and othcrwlio rofresl thr-mselves. Even the exhilaration of Ast Wednesday's renunciatory vowa has passoc away hy this lime , and m > ldo from the strug gle inoro severe In sumo cauei than Ir others of kect > ! ne unimpaired the good rcso lutloni of that holy day , the wearied mind and tired body may apply themselves to suet restoratives as are nearest ut hand and heal uttt'il to Individual needs. Lent haa Us compensations , even for whlct , as do not by nctlvo observance , subject them elves to Its peacclul Influence. Its cnforcii murtlflcatlon of tlio llcalt 1 ? , nla , not alwayi welcomed by those whofo corporal frame Is most In need of such correction ; but It retail- llslire a temporary catiallty between these and thosp others \vhuse flesh U perpetually jnortllled By their Inability to got Into thr charmed Lent-ob ervliig circle , and by tut envy consequent thereon. It grlovously cur tails the society columns of the Sundaj papers , and contracts the hearts of those whc contribute thereto ; wit , on tlio other hand. U mercifully tempers oven the wind ot this iioro aflllctlon to that shorn lamb , the reader , And ao the social wheel , hi Its yearly round , dlpi a segment of Us periphery below the blackness of this penitential tlma , carrying with It Into ecllpso that class of earth'B In habitants which habitually occupied the larg. est share of public attention with IU comings and goini'H. humbler part * of the circle are raised by the same involution Into a plural- iicnco denied them ut other tlmco , anJ arc permitted to luxuriate In a radiance which is entirely Independent of the full moon which follows the twenty-first of March. These are some of the things which do , or should , commend Lent to all men as a thing to be desired. For the devout , who strictly observe the sacrificial season , and who need no recom pense thcicfor other thnn the consciousness of rectitude , there are componsatalons as well , which fall like an uiiHOUGht benedic tion upon those who deserve them. Not to dwell unduly upon the capacity of \ Irtuc to be its own reward , nor to Insist upon the urgent necessity for mental und physical rest which Is often self-evident , there Is the spiritual exaltation which leads to and accompanies n good stiff , genulno renunciation a tem porary putting away of something near and dear. Conceive the case of ono to whom the the diamond-back terrapin ot the Chesa peake Is a dally necessity : and stand In awe at the sublimity of a sacrifice which interdicts that chclonlan luxury for forty days. Or , again , suppose the obligation of Icntcn self-denial to have fallen heavily upon ono to whom the habit of plucking the blos som of the century plant hag become as second end nature. If ho firmly believes It to be his duty to relinquish this deop-rooted cus tom for forty days , and-nerves himself to the point of turning hid back upon his chlcfest Joy ho Is a hero , and as such Is very properly admired by his fellows of lesser stamina. These may bo Isolated cases , but It Is be lieved that they are fairly typical of the vast bulk ot penitential self-denial which Is practiced by bravo and "holy " men and women yiroughout Christendom. 1'iirty by the Murrlcil Men. IMUTV FltOH THIS WEST HUTUHA'S. SnllNllra with the IloHiilt of Their KITortN. After a Junket of over 0,000 miles and an absence of almost a month , the western con tingent ot the exposition promoters returned homo last night. The special sleeper , which bore the black and yellow banners of the party , was attached to the eastbound Over land of the Union Pacific , and arrived ia Omaha at 4:40. : The party consisted of O. W. Wattles , John L. Webster , G. M. Hitchcock , Captain II. E. Palmer , Clement Chase and W. S. Popploton , nearly all being accompanied by their wives and children. The last stop made by tbo party was at Sacramento and the homeward run of over 1,800 uilles wae made without Incident. President Wattles of the exposition expressed - pressed himself as being well satisfied with the trip , taking under consideration the dis advantages encountered In the way of hard times , the lethargy of the homo legislature In acting upon the Nebraska appropriation , and other obstacles. " 1 think wo mny con gratulate ourselves , " he said , "upon having advertised the exposition over a vast terri tory. People of the western stated who had never heard of the project were made ac quainted with It In the best possible manner. Nearly all the- capitals wo visited had the legislature In session and In the majority of places we addressed a Joint gathering of both the houses. It Is true that the western country Is feeling the effects of hard tlmeo most severely , yet wherever we went wo met with loynlty to the great west and were handsomely received. Interest upon every hand was manifested In the great show and wo were assured by all those In power that pressure would be broufiht to bear toward making appropriations for the etoto ex hibits. The prospect for the Ca'lfornlan ap propriation of $50,000 Is , I think , most ex cellent ; also for the Utah sum of $20,000. At Olympla wo found the legislative houses wrestling with the subject of Internal econ omy , but have a fair assurance that the state will come forward with at least $12,000 to represent the industries of this truly mag nificent en'iplro. The private auhscrlptlon of Marcus Daly of $15,000 was most encouraging and I think'the legislature of Montana will surely appropriate $1G,000 > In addition , It not moro. The appropriations of Kansas and Colorado are more doubtful , yet they will unquestionably fall Into line , as the work toward perfecting the exposition progresses. " Captain Palmer , John L. Webster , Clement Chase and others of the party expressed themselves along the same lines and appeared well satisfied with the outcome of the trip. Council Ji'iviHb Women.
