THE OMAHA DAILY BEE ; , SEPTEMBER is , isoc. CONDITION OF OMAHA'S ' TRADE Cooler Weather1 Brings About a Better Demand - mand for Fall Goods. LOCAL RETAIL TRADE UNUSUALLY SMALL Local C nil ii Men Credit N'clirnnku with I he I.nrKONt Corn Croii In ( bo y of tlio .Stiite lluiliieeil llanlc CleurliiKi ) . The State fair at an end , the present week saw trade back In the old nnd well lieaten patll with nothing In particular to 1 > reak the monotony ot the dally round. ! * ] n n general way the week has been devoid of nny very Interesting features as regards the Jobbing business ot the city. The cooler weather , bringing with It a reminder of the near approach of fall and winter , has natu- r.i'ly enough brought nbout a little freer buying of cold weather merchandise of all Hinds. The movement was not largo , but In some lines Improvement was shown over previous weeks. The general sentiment In the Jobbing district would seem to point toward a con tinuance ot present conditions , ns there Is every reason for believing that consumption will bo reduced to the very lowest mark possible owing to tbo scarcity of money In the country. While occasional spurts arc to bo expected , as n change In the weather or season may compel the buying of mer chandise , no one appears to believe that business will be anything but dull for seine time to come. Money IM scarce In the country , and with ptlccs on farm products bo low , thcro Is no chance of Its becoming moro plentiful , not for seine time , at least. The local retail trade is very quiet In every line nnd collections are poor. Strong efforts arc being made In some branches of business to limit credits ami thus guard against excessive losses from poor-paylng customers. What meas- uru of success Is to result from these efforts remains to bo scon. The ac tual condition of business Is reflected to u considerable degree In the bank clear ings , which for the past week show n fallIng - Ing oft of 2'A per cunt as compared with the corresponding week of previous year , \VhlIo a report of clearings that shows a decrease can never be satisfactory. It Is really re garded as a matter of congratulation that the decrease Is no larger in view of the fact that the clearings lor tbo whole conn- try show a decrease of over 21 per cent. HuslnesH may be very quiet In Omaha , but It is evidently in much worse condition at u good many other points , especially so in the largo eastern cities. CATBIUNG TO CHILDUHN. Very few people appear to realize the Importance of the toy business. Largo fortunes have been made by Inventors of n slnglo toy , connived for the amusement of children , und somu of the largest manu facturing entcrptises In the country are devoted to turning out toys and other goods on the saino order. The Jobbing of thcso goods has come to bo un Important busi ness In nearly all the largo cities of the country , and Omaha does not appear to bo behind In this respect. During the fair week there wcro representatives her.o from all the large western cities , and from Chicago cage and New Yoik as well , with samples to show the retail trade of the country , but from all accounts they did not meet with the reception that they had expected. Country merchants appear to have found out that Omaha has as good a. Jobbing toy Jiouso as is to be found In thp country , and thpy showed their appreciation by placing their orders with the homo concern tnste.id ot sending their money to help swell tha business of rival cities. FIGURING- THE CORN CROP. Some of the local grain men are calling In , question the last government report which gave the condition of the corn crop In Nebraska as 103 as against 108 a month ago. They claim that whatever change there may have been was on the side of Improvement anil that If 103 was a true rep resentation of the crop condition of a month ago the last report should have been nt least 112 or 113. The. government report would Indicate a crop for tbo state of 200.0CO.COO to 223,0(10,000 ( bushpls of corn , but the moro sanguiuo amonu local grain mun say It will rcach 273 OflO.OOO to 300,000.000 ImsheJM , The quality of the corn Is excel lent and the ylolil Is largo In all sections' , aside from ono. or two counties down In the southwestern part of the state. It is estimated that 70 per cent of the crop la out of all danger from frost. A light frost would be benetlclal , ns It would tend to bring the corn to maturity more rapidly. Towa will probably lead all other states In thii union In T > olnt of yield , with Kansas secoiml and Nebraska .third , though Nebraska and Kansas may change places when the actual yield Is moro dotlnltcly known. Touring leisure moments operators on the Hoard of Trade have figured It out that corn at prevailing prices would make a cheaper fuel than coal. It makes a very hat flrc. Is easily kindled , and gives out a wimll proportion of ash nnd no gns. Some operators have calculated that the gpiipral use of eorn for fuel on the part of farmers would materially reduce the quantity avail able for shipment to market , and con- spqgently have Homo inilnrnco In bringing nbout nn advance In values. Very few farmers , however , burn corn , ns the rule Is to shell it llrst and use the cobs only for fnnl. In times past some corn has been burned In Kansas nnd thu railroads tried it ono season as a substitute , for coal on their locomotives. Corn at the present tlmn Is bringing the farmer In Nobrask.i only Ilftl2 ! cents per bushel. bushel.NEBRASKA NEBRASKA FACTORY FACTS. nusliipss among the manufacturers of the ntato Is none too good owing to the general dppipsslon , but at the same time most local factories have held their own In splto of nil udvorso circumstances. The Cudaby Packing company will coin- jnened the manufacture of laundry and bath soaps the first of the month. 'Ibo Mereer Chemical company Is pushed to 111 ! orders , thn dpmand for goods In their line being quite good from the regular trade , A\hllo In addition they have a gov ernment contract to supply all the Indian ngeiH'lPs In the country with pharmaceu tical preparations. The llrst requisition from the government called for goods amounting to over $4,000. Whllo gcurly all the roots nnd herbs which enter into the manufacture of medicines are either Im- liorted or brought from southern eountiies , there ure a few which nro found growing in this part of the world , and a dozen or - . - "IV11 n u furnished steady employment In liuntlim for the. few useful varieties or pI'intH to be found hero. The Blow freights ( due In part to the small number of curs going at nny one time ) , tbe lack of fruit or refrigerator cars and the Inexperience of the packers here for long dis tance shipments , are the greatest drawbacks. This caused the decline shortly after the opening. The closing price for December was BOTJc. Corn was more active and lirm , influence ! largely by the strength In wheat. There was free covering by shorts and some de mand for the long account. Small Argen tine shipments and strong cables wuro also factors in the strength. Heavy hog receipts were instrumental In opening provisions at prices a shade lower than yesterday's close. Aged nmlvliltchnlrcil senators , like tlio venerable Murrlll of Vermont , who lias occuplcil a seat In the chamber for thirty years , nmy ho led to voivlor homrwhat when they flrst sec Its newly iicciuired splendors. Anil the younger ami moro fes- tlvo senators , whoso eyes so often icvert to the gnllcilos to cntch the smllci anil glances of their fair occupants , will sec the spectators , not crowded In old pi.lnleil wooden benches as of , yore , but sealed luxuriously In rising tiers nf opera eiialrn , richly cushioned and upholstered In dot It icd leather and constructeil after n uuliiuo design , They will sco the walls renewed nnd fresh , nnd at night the chamber will bo Illuminated brilliantly with Ijoaiuiful clus ters ot incandescent electric lights above the tinted glass ceilings , and not only la the galleries , but on the senate floor , every body will bo moro comfortable by reason of tbo many novel Improvements In the reconstruction , heating anil ventilation oC the restored chamber. As stated lutnto- 4 fore the temperature In summer will bo Kept cool and oqtiablo by means of a cold-storage system , nnd nt nil times and seasons tbu personal comfort and wel fare ot the fccnatnra will be promoted by the boat modern agencies that money can buy. And thus greater Inducements ami incentives than ever will bo present to prompt aspiring statesmen to attempt to "break Into" the United Status sonata THI3 CHAM1U3H DISMANTLED. Just now thu old chamber , that has not been materially changed for forty jears , Is completely gutteil , and the Interior Is filled with u contused litter of mingled bricks , uiortar , lumber , Iron and flying dust. The entire lloor and all the brick walls and piers beneath It have been taken out , to bo replaced by anew lion floor.topped by a wooden ono of cherry. Tlio homely , old-fashioned galleries have been utterly demolished , nnd will bo superseded by up-to-dato theaters , Tbo pealing capacity of tbo old galleries accommodated 1,500 people , but the arrangement ot the benches always resulted in jamming nnd disorderly crowding on great field days. Tbcro will bo only 700 chairs In the now galleries , but each one will bo u sort of reserved seat , and when they have all been tilled .tho limit of capacity cannot be stretched , and thus overcrowding will bo avoided. Those gallery chairs will bo remarkable irom the fnet that they are to bo supplied with an original ventilating device. Each chair will have two mahogany legs or sup ports , and nmlcr these , forming a part nt tlio legs , will be an apparatus fnr diffusing an ciniablo current of fresh nlr of the right tonipeiature In and around the clothing and body of the occupant. This air will bo supplied continuously from shafts under neath the floor , and will be sifted evenly from apertures in tbu supports , so that thcio will be no drafts. The cost of thcsa ventilated chairs will bu $3,000 , or $ r..U apiece. Tbu scnatbrs' mahogany desks flown on the senate floor will also bo fitted with similar ventilators. , PLAN FOR VENTILATION. Thu ventilation scheme 1 elaborate and ingenious. It It now bolng carried out under the direction of the architect ot the capltol , Mr. ISdvvard Clark , in accordance with scientific plans prepared by I'rof. S. II. Woodbrldgo , , profcssor of physics la the Massachusetts Institute of Technology , at Boston. The need nf Improved ventila tion in the senate docs not strike the nvnr- ago visitor In the galleries as urgent , but ever since one lordly and reverend sen ator , n few years ago , removed ono of hla uiiumer shoes to enso a lacerated toe and plaecd the wounded foot on a colleague's desk , there has been a deal of joking In. tbo senate on thu subject ot ventilation , and there arc olliclals In the senate who remark that tbo present ventilation pio- ject Is the sequel of that jocular and good- natured agitation. First , a cold storage plant , to cost $15,000 , will bn established In the terrace at the west front of the capltol. It will bo ope rated by the usual ammonia process and will ineliido a refrigerating machine , a tank , an Insulator and an englno. Exceedingly cold brine will bo supplied to the air In the system of nlr ducts reaching from the tuivaco to the distributing shafts. This will abstn.et the humidity from the air and reduce its temperature , and can bo controlled so that tlio reiiulsllo supply of cool air can bo given 10 tlio senate even In thu n.ost torrid Washington summer weather. Associated with this cold storage plant will be frcnh air and steam heating systems. The steam heating plant m the tqnato basement , ' in undergoing recon struction , ami suitable arrangements will bo provided to furnish this steam heated air to automatic fans at a definite temper ature. ' The old fans and steam engines have been removed , and newer and moro illlclcnt foils will bo substituted , to bo driven by cleotrlu motors dlieetly con nected with tno shaft fans. WHCKM THKY Q13T AIR. Tl'o pure outside nlr supplied to the steam heating cells will hu brought from the stone tower nt tbo northwest auction ot the capltol grounds , and , after being properly warmed , will be diffused through the beating shafts. The temperature will be regulated by a sp cjal automatic dcvlco. If the temperature In thu enato should change onu degree either too warm or too cool , the d vko will abut off thu hot nlr supply in a measure , if too warm , and al low the cold air to mix with It until tha desired tcmpciaturo U restored. It too cool , the cupply of cold nlr will bo re stricted Jn n similar way , Tim air Mijjply , whether heated for winter - tor or artificially cooled for summer , will bn forced from thu various plnnts with an ovnn pressure through the air shafts under tbe ulr-tlght flooring of the nenato and gal- Icrlw , through the dculi and chair legs and thrmigh the diffusing boxen. The pressure will bo controlled by regulator ) ) under each' chair , dusk and box. The foul or conauwcd air will osrapo through especially designed apertures In the rclllngt : , and will bo drawn theneo to tJifc ouUldo by n special /an jdae'ed on tbo roof of thu connecting oor- , rldrir , joining the tenatn ulnj ; to the old central building , The paneling of Ihc gallery walls will bo rmiowed and painted In lighter and moro modern lU'slgna , and Iho lower walls of the chamber will bo restore/I and colored In light pom I. with gold damask panels , Tlm press 'gallery will llkuwlsu bo restored In an Improved farm , and ventilating ebalr will supplant UIOIQ of the abandoned patteru , INCANUUSCKNT 1.1(11173 , The Bulmtltutlon of Incandescent electric lights iibovft the Klasa ceilings Will bo a. great improvement over tlm old gas lamps.
