The wheat market today was weak nnd firm by turns on tltrco or four occasions , nnd although winding up nt n decline for thu day of Ho per bu. , the tone of the market nt the then prevailing Iirlce was rather strong September closed t from MHo to M'.ic , against 57o yester day , nnd December at t'Jc , compared with COlic on the day before. The poor quality of most of the carloads offered In the cash market and the small demand for that kind of wheat gives nn appearance ot heaviness In the cosh market which affects the specu lators , although the nrtlclo dealt In for future delivery Is In Rood demand In the sample market , both from elevator people nnd country millers , and that kind Is ex tremely scarce. Corn was easier principally because of the prospect for the Krowllif ? crop. 1'ro- visions opened Ilrm and remained so until nearly the end , when they weakened with lard the only nrtlclo higher In the end than It closed yesterday. There wns little Improvement In the trade In wheat nnd the volume of business was very moderate. The feellnc displayed at the start nnd during the early part of the session was weak and prices sagged down , rallying some later , Ilnat llgures show ng nbout < Ac decline. Fluctuations for the day wc.ro within -y4c. Liberal northwest re ceipts , the lower stock market and a fail ure of a couple of banks , one nt New \ork and the other at Duluth , tended to de press the price , and then temperatures were cooler In the spring wheat country. The absence of outside speculative Interest also continues something of n deptesslng Influence. Cables came easy at Hil de cline , and western maikets ruled easy , rlie government report WIIH Interpreted ns bull ish , showing a drop of 14-1 points In the condition of spring- wheat , or < s.3 per cent. Antwerp cables again referred to reduc tions being made In the yield of wheat n southern Russia. Ilalns were reported In Krtince. cooler wcnther in Germany , and dull and chilly conditions In England utter atorms. , Thcro was but a moderate trade In corn , the market ruling rather aulet nt times the range for the day being from Vic to % c. The feeling manifested was naturally weak on the government report , which made an Improvement In conditions of 3.0 points , or 9G per cent , ns against 102.3 per cent August 1 last year. OatB were weaker and lower. Prices opened easier , receded % c nnd closed nt n net loss of from 'Ac to > ie. There was less trading , but a fair volume of busi ness transpired. The feature was the sellIng - Ing by two leading longs nnd covering by shorts. The government crop report was bullish , showing a reduction In the con dition during July of 19 points , making it 77 n Provisions held fairly firm until the end of the session , when n break occurred which lost nn early advance In pork of 17V4c , and 12V4c besides. Lard held lirm throughout , contrary to Its recent atti tude to the other articles , and it closed 2Hc higher for September and PC up for January than It did yesterday. Klbs were more In line with pork , but scarcely so weak In the end. For September the clos ing price was only 2'/5c beiow that of yes terday , nnd January was unchanged.
