ner , who has recently become Mme. Dou-
guercau and the wife of the distinguished
French painter , was a moderately successful
artUt living In Worcester , Mass , She was
the second member of what may bo called a
firm of artUts , the tenlor partner being Miss
M , Imogeno Uobinsou. Together they set
up a "Worcester school of design and acad
emy of fiuu arts , " to which departments
wcro added fur tlio study of music , lan
guages , etc , so that the institution resem
bled any girls' school of that date.
Although patronized by some of the lead
ing families of the city , the school was not
n lasting success. When , after a lew- > ears ,
It was Klvt'ii up. Miss Gardner went abroad ,
and there she has since lived ,
Miss Gaidner was born In 1812. She
still Is remembered In Worcester as a pretty
biunctto ) oung woman of pleasing manners

particular provided the at Untie circles of
the town with considerable amusement.
Miss Gardner had at the time a theory

Laffen's plain In over forty War department
wagons. The sun was scorching hot as the
long procession btarted at 10.30. The route
to the plain was lined with villagers nnd
othcis , who warmly cheered the Americans.
The duke of Connaught , Lord Wolseley nnd
the headquarters staff were on horseback.
When the plain was reached It was seen
that the saluting point was flanked by a
large number of coaches a'nl drags filled
with ladles. For the accommodation of thp
visitors and their friends special stands had
been elected. Nearly 2,000 troops were
paraded and they presented a brilliant spec
tacle.
The sham fight commenced soon after the
arrival of the American Ancients. The
tioops wcro under command of Generals
Swalnc nnd Hengough. After some
maneuvers had been carried out the whole
force marched past the saluting point , where
the stars and stripes lloatcd a hhort distance
from the rojal standard. In all there were
twenttwo icglments of infantry , cavalry
and artillery on the Held.
The carriage containing the United States
ambassador was drawn up under the royal
standard and eloso to the royal carriage
containing tlio duchess of Connaught and
her two daughters.
The march past commenced at 1 o'clock.
Lord Wolseley had previously Introduced
Colonel Walker to the duchess and the
princess nnd then Mr. Hayntd and Colonel
Walker stood by the royal carriage. Loid
Wolseley , however , asked Colonel Walker
to share the salute with him. Colonel
Walker accepted this unusual honor nnJ
stood by the side of Lord Wolseley's horse.
Lord Wolselcy , the duke of Connunght und
Colonel Walker were the only officers In
