CHICAOO. Jan. 7.-Thcro wns heavlci trntllnft In the grain markets today than foi rotno time ] ) nst , and fluctuations were rapid The somber foreign outlook at first oxcrclw ! a powerful Inllucnco. but us later news was more pacific the markets yielded more tc ordinary Influences nnd cased off.Vhcal opened Irregularly at from Glc to H . > k to 6U c and closed at fiom CO'.ic to COWc. t loss of Ho compared with last nlfiht. Corr held Its strength bolter nnd closed Me hlghei nt 29'Ac , while oatu lost Its early pain nni clotcd practically unchanged nt lO Jc. Pro' Visions made sulntnnllnl KnlnI'ork showed nn advance of 27ic ! , lard Be nnd ribs U'ic. Wheat opened strong but very IrreRtilai nnd under some llttlo excitement. The flrsl transactions In May wetc mnde over a range of Vtc per bu. , or nt from COHo t > to GH4c only ono or two trades wore effected nt the top nnd bottom prices , the bulk of the trails notions during the tlrst few seconds havlnp bscn nt ( Xc. ) The price rose and fell foi nn hour In mighty uwclli of nctlve trndlns between COUe nnd Clc , but after the fltsl llftocn minutes of the ccsslo.1 the tendency for the remainder of the hour was Kcncrnlly downward. The one-nine strength wan the exprepplon of the doubt in the minds of the opcrntor regarding the possibility of ni Anglo-German war. Alter the openlnr BltiiKglc mound C0c nnd Glc ( litre wa n cradual decline U ) CO'/sc , and that was tel lowed by a rocovcrj' to Gin ngnln , due to n report Ipsucd by Statistician Thnmnn , whlcli gave the condition of the winter when ! plnntw In the six stales which grow It mosl largely nt 78.1 , against SIM on Uecombci 1 , nnd adding that 78.1 1st the lowest statuf of the plnnl ever recorded In the month ol January. Hut the upward movement roused pome of Ihc big phorls to make a hot llghl against the advance , nnd n great volume ol long wheat came up on the market nnd the advance was checked. The newn , too. turncil less bullish : consoli recovetcd all their do- cllns , and the Inter cables quoted whenl lower und Argentine reports showed clearing weather and that Aigentlno wheat wns of fered In London to arrive at lower prlcer , With this the mailed here peen became heavy and many of the early buyers began to sell out , nnd It did not take long for the price to go oft le- from the top and % c below the close last night. The market was qulel but steady during the last hour. May holdIng - Ing at from CO'ic to C0sc , but without much business nnd closed at from G0',4c to GO'/iC. Corn opened strom : under the continuation of the warlike political situation In Europe. It acted very nervously for about two hours nnd fluctuated rather wildly. May , which doped yesterday at 2ic ! , started at 23c tir to 23Vlc , and rose excitedly to 29c. Calls for the day came Into play at the advance , und selling against those privileges brought about a gradual but lirogulnr decline. The bulk of the polling after 12 o'clock was nt from 23'lc to 29Wff2 ( ; ic , nnd It closed nt from 29'4o ' to 29'Xc. Cash corn brought ic per bu. more than It illd yesterday. Oats wsre strong In sympathy with the better feeling In corn , but most of the early gain wns lost , May sold nt from l0c ! to 20c nnd off to from IDXc to 19T c split. Provisions started llrm and maintained that condition all day. The same Influences which , had started wheat nnd corn were at work In the hog products market , nnd , un like the traders In grain , the provision men kept up the good demnnd with which they Inaugurated the business of the day until the session wns over. Hog receipts were even hcavlsr than the heavy numbsr esti mated yesterday for today , but the report" from the yards were that cvcrv one wanted hogs at yesterday's prices. The day's run was 44,000 head , and 45,000 head Is the esti mate for tomorrow. Offerings of products wore light and that was n feature of the entire day's trading. The day's advance In pork wan from 25c to 27' c ; In lard. Go to 7Hc. ribs , 12'Ac. Estimated for tomorrow : Wheat , Co cars ; corn , 875 cars ; oats , 135 cars ; hoes , 45.00C head. As com pared with yesterday there wan a slight falling off In the arrivals , but nfl camp ired with Wednesday of last week there was a big gain. The cattle have evidently been coming too fas-t for the demand and values on lllllni : ; cattle are gradually sinking In ron3e < iu nce. Steers good enough for the dressed bce-I trade were quite well represented among the receipts , but a good many of them were only fairish stuff , really good tattle not being very plentiful. The market was lower on all grades. Handy fat cuttle did not experience as much decline , but heavy cattle , especially those on the coarselsh or der , were close to 15c lower than on Monday. AB usual on a down market the : raile was not very active , but at the close the offerings were pretty well cleaned up. Butchers stock was In pretty liberal sup ply , there being a goodly number of cows and heifers on sale. The offerings , how ever , were none too great for the demand , which WUH largo enough to hold pi Ices pretty nearly steady. In some cases Milts- men thought the market was a little easier In sympathy with fat steers , but the general trade was about like yesterday. The market was fairly active and the offerings were pietty much all taken In good season. Stackers and feeders were In light tin ply and as there was a fair demand , the market was In pretty good shape. Values \vero fully steady on all grades. Representative sales : DEEP STEERS. Jan. 8. Thoman's crop report today rays : Returns up to the Cth Inrt. , In clusive , make quite a marked falling off In the condition of winter wheat during the past month. In the six states east of the Rocky Mountains , which furnish the com mercial supply , the present condition Is 7S.1 per cent , against 84.4 per cent on December 1 , and 94,2 per cent on January 1 , 1805 , a deterioration of C.3 per cent as compared with last month , and of 10.1 per cent na compared with the January condition last year. This Is the lowest January condition ever reported. For the whole breadth It Is S2.C per cent , against 8G.7 per cent last month , and 94,3 per cent last January , or a falling off as com pared with last month of 4.1 per cent , of 11.7 per cent ns compared with January one year ago. Improvement Is noted on tlio Pacific coast. The protection and benefit usually accorded by a covering of snow have been deficient this jjeason , and owing to a small growth , thin E'tand ' and lack of vitality , th ? plant will bo unusually susceptible to atmospheric changes. With a very favorable winter , normal vitality and growth may yet bs realized , but with ad verse climatic conditions , more than ordinary damage would result. SENATOR lULI * HAS AVAR FEVUK. TIilnkH that CnnMrrcMM Should Attend Strictly to Iiuiiorliint IliiHlncHH. BROOKLYN , Jan. 8. In a Washington In terview In the Baglo Senator Hill gives evidence that ho has become a victim of the "war fever" that Is sweeping the earth. "I think It would bo a mighty good Idea K the women were packed away and sent out of Washington and the men left alone here to attend to the business that they are sent here for by the country. There are too mcny dinners and too much social dissipa tion In official circles at the capital. No man can go to these fashionable dinners night after night and sit up until morning attending to social functions and bo In any condition to grapple with the knotty problems of finance and affairs that are at this tlnu forced upon the consideration of our public men. I attribute a good many foolish blunders made by public men of late to just these things too much society and not enough attention and study of public affairs. " SAYS HARRISON W1M < NUT MARIIV. Uncle John Scott I.nuuliH nt the Cur- rrnt Humor * . PORT TOWNSKND , Wash. , Jan. 8. There Is more than ordinary Interest felt here In the gossip concerning the probable marriage of ex-President Harrison and Mrs. Dlmmlck , because her uncle , John Scott , a brother of the late Mrs. Harrison , has resided here for the pait nix yearn and Is one of Port Tonnsend's moat popular citizens , John Scott baa always corresponded with General Harrison slnco coming here and appears to enjoy a certain degree of confidence of the latter , probably because he baa quite as good a reputation of being quite as discreet with his thoughts and expressions aa liaa the cx- presldent himself. When questioned about the gossip , Judge Scott protested ho knew nothing of It. "There's just about as much probability of General Harrison and Mrs. Dlmmlck mar rying au that you and I will marry each other , " he raid. Killed ! > > u Glunt I'owilrr DENVER , Jan. 8.
