THE OMAHA DAILY iTSEE : SUNDAY , JUNK 10 , 1895. - DOMINO A DECIDED DUMP Looked Like a Leadplpo in tin Suburban , but Never Showed at the End. IAZZAROHE WINS WITHOUT STRETCHING llemnrUably 1'oor Plicmlng Mnrte by the Oildioii I'nvorlto In a Itnco tluit bcclncd tn Ilo Mndo Just to Ills Notion , NHW YOHK , June 1C. Heller Ihan today's weather could not lia\o been desireJ for Iho running of llio Suburban , as Ihe air was ns clear as could be , and , although the sun was hot , a cooling breeze swept across the grand- atand anil down the etrelch at Sheepshead Hay. In spile of Ihe fact that the Suburban was supposed to be at Ihe mercy of Domino and the starters only numbered six , there was as much Interest as ever In Iho race. When the lime came for Ihe running of Ihe big race a typical Suburban crowd was'pres ent , and the hwn was as well picked as Ihe grandstand. At ( Uo minutes pjst 4 the horses cantered uy past the grandstand to the start ing , but , unllko former years , there wai < very llttlo enthusiasm. A few applauded Domino and Taral , and when Sir Walter and Doggett appeared there was considerable handclapplng Apparenty the game llttlo eon of Midlothian was the sentimental favorite , oven though he was a bad second choice In the betting. The others got llttlo attention , and In a short lime Iho six conlsnders were ready for Ihe [ e word The delay at the post was but trifling and without any false breaks Howe got them In line The red Hag swished , the crowd shouted and the rac > was begun. In I the first few Jumps Declare led the way , with Hong and Dance second , Domino third , Sir Walter fourth , Lazzarono fifth and Hublcon TF sixth. Domino wa on Ihe outside , and Taral wanted to get up with the leaders , so he set a fair pace and gave chase for Song and Dance , who had taken the lead. Then the lot took things asy and passed the Judges for the first time In twelve and one- half seconds , Song and IXince leading by three parts of a length , Domino second by a loncth , Sir Walter third by a neck , anJ Hublcon , Declare and ha/rarono following Then came the simp turn at the paddlck , and with the Jockeys steadying their mountp aa they came around , Song and Dance look It a llttlo easier , while Declare gained a bit , Sir Walter falling off In a worse poslllon The first quarter was run In 0.25 , and Song and Dance was only leading by a head , with Domino second , a length In front of Declare anil Hublcon , Sir Walter and La rarono fol lowing The half wa.i reached In 0 51 , with Song anJ Dance only a neck In front of Sir Walter , ho half a length In front of Domino , who was a head In front of Hublcon , Declare and Lazzarono following Taral had not yei made a move on Domino , and had calmly seen Sir Walter pas hlrn The pace was slow that Domino was getting , what It was eupposed ho wanted an easy run at first and a spurt In the end At the live-eighths polo Sir Walter ww gaining On went Sir Walter and soon two'lengths separated him from the rest of the field Hamilton , on Ltuzaronc , came to the conclusion that Sir Walter was the horse ho had to beat , so he let out a link and ga\c chose Ho cut down Declare , and then Song and Dance , and then got Into fourth place at the seven-eighths pole Hublcon was only a neck In front of him , Domino only a licaJ further away , while D.oggett was working on Sir Walter , two lengths In front of all "Sir Walter wins ! " was the cry. and It did , Indeed , look as If such might bo the case. The turn into the stretch with only n quarter of a mlle to gc was close at hand and all the Jockeys were l\ard \ at work. Sir Walter maintained his lead of two lengths up to the turn , but Lazzarono had crept up to Domino and was only a short head behind The mlle was passed In 1:42 , "Look at Laz/arone , " was then the cry. Ho was coming after Sir Walter like a whirlwind , and poor Domino was now completely used up Lazzarono loft him as If he were stamlliiK still , and there was a great ply of whips and spurs. It was of no use to urge Doggett or his mount to further efforts for Hamilton had the better horse under him , and Inch by inch ho crept away from his rival , first a ncck then half a length and then daylight showed between them as they bounded along , and just as the watches of the timers stopped at 2:07 : 4-5 , Lazzarono passed the wire a length and a half In front of Sir Walter , Domino , however , was doomed to still further humiliation , for In the last few jumps , Song and Dance took thltd place away from him , while Declare and Rubicon were four lengths behind him It was a true run race , and the nest horse at the weights won It. The opening race was an easy ono for the nuttcrfiles , for she laid back to the last furlong and then came away and won with case from Hey del Oarderes. who was heav ily backed , and finished far ahead of the rest of the field Monaco won the second rather easily. Then the double event was won with seven starters. Applegate was the favorite , with Ha/lct second choice , whllo the big son of Hanover , Handspring who , as good as 10 1 , galloped In an easy winner. IISM l.L AMJ AUVri.N WON IIASILV Deciding1 Mutch fur the C ty Championship In lonnU Double- * . Last evening Hafakell and Austin \yon the tllle of champions of the city In the tennis doubles. The jJocUllnif match was pla > ed at G o'clock on the grounds of the Omaha Lawn Tennis club at Twenty-second and Hnrnoy stioels , belween the team that held the title during the past year , .Haver- stick nnd Colpetrer , and Haskell and Aus tin , who were Ihe winners of the tourna ment which closed last week The game was not particularly Interest ing at any point , BH it was too easily won. Orl > tluee sets were needed to decide. In the first Colpetzer and Ilavcrstlck started out "well , but let up before the end of the set , losing1 it finally by the score of G to 4 The second set was a love set. In the last Haverstlck and Colpotzer again started out In good shajo nnd appeared to have some hope of Retting the set , as the score was at one time J to 1 , but their opponenls ob tained live games out of the remaining six that were pla > ed The llnal score was 6-4 , G-0 and G-l , In favor of Haskell and Austin ! 2ach of the teams played well enough together , although there were a number of points lost b > both because thr men were not In jilnce , or thought the other man of the team was after the bill. The play of relthoi team , however , was In any way re markable , probably because the losing team was not a match for the other and because both teams knew this Consequently the Individual piny of all four of the players was not up to what thej have each shown In the past Of the four HaverstlcK was evidently plajlng to win all the time. He made the greatest efforts' to get after halls. The others , of course , did not Intentionally lose a point , but unless they had a good chance of gettlnK the balls they did not exert themselves to go after them This consent nt ently detracted much from the Interesl of the match , as there were very few pretty strokes. Hut Haverstlck went after every thing and played a "pretty " game , as he al- wa > s does In doubles. Although he made a number of double faults , his service was especially good , making several points by the quick and speedy balls he sent when he was serving. He watt unfortunate In tryIng - Ing to smash the ball from the back of the court , and even nearer to the net , semllns ? a large number Into the net. Colpolzer was apparently more Imbued with the idea that the match could not be won from his opponents than his partner. Consequently his play was by no means as good ns usual nnd ho lost a large number of bad points. Sometimes nt the net he sl-ovved what he could do , both in smash- In ! ; and In placing Neither Austin nor Haskell exerted them selves They plu > od an avernso good game , but they appeared to content themselves In allowing their opponents to make the larger number of points for them by send ing their returns out of the court and Into the net. They did not try to bo very skill ful In theit placing. There Is some talk ot having a tourna ment of mixed doubles In the near future , but the anangoments have not yet been completed _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ llrllunnlit und Nlngnrti Win. SOUTHAMPTON.
