thirteen arrivals In 1810 , the business dropped
to only one arrival In 1514. DIrectly after
American rights were acknowledged In 1815
things btgan to boom steadily. In 1817' ' thlr.

In 1820' there were twenty-eight nrrlvals
In 1830 forty-six. In 1840 eighty-two and In
1854 113.
I was between 180 and 1857 that whalIng

320 vessels then engaged , with a tonnage of
from 104,000 to engage. Their catch morel
In value from $5,000,000 to $10OOQ,000. with
an average of about $9500.000 ; , an Immense
part of whIch WS profit. AS whaling
boomed , so did everything else. In 1851
alone forty-eight vessels were added to tIle :
fleet . most of them built al home or Its Im-
leet. buit
medlte vicinity. Blacksmiths . caulkers , rIggers - '
gels , salmallers , ship carpenter and all
other artIsans naturally ' allied to ship Inter-
est were In great demand and found plenty
of work al high wages. As an example of
the way things In New Bedford boomed ,
financIally . It may be InterestIng to say that
In 1852 , In one contract , the government
bought 76,000 galons or sperm oIl at $1.18 %
per gallon. And that was a fall sample at
the market There was always a demand
and al good prices. which yIelded . a big profit .
The aggregate of population jumped up by
the thousands. In 1850 'It was 16,000 and In
1860 I was 22.000 ,
To show the Immense profits or whaling , I
few cases are cited. In 1850 the chIp Envoy
fled out at a cost of $8.000. brought In a
catch valued at $138,000. In 1852 the Sara-
toga landed $124.000 after I voyage of thirty-
thremonlhs. . In 1853 the Montreal. 'n
thlrty two months handed $136,023.19. In
1866 the shIps Corinthian and George IoW-

I Is said that In four . years on Investments

1867 the ship Commodore MorrIs In thirty
