LINCOLN , Nov. 7. ( Special. ) The supreme
premo court convcncil today pursuant to
adjournment nnd a number of cases were
argued and submitted. The habeas corpus
cnso of Attorney VnnScelvcr of California ,
the man wanted badly In that state ,
was reviewed by the court and submitted
on a brief niod by tils attorney. Sheriff
Aublo of Los Angeles Is firm In tlio convic
tion that his patience will bo rewarded with
victory and that ho Is destined to enjoy
the company of Van back to California. A
decision Is expected tomorrow morning , to
which tlmo the court adjourned.
Ono of the alleged victims of C. II.
llcrtram , the missing saloon keeper , who
suddenly shook the dust of Lincoln from his
feet last Saturday , Is a young man named
Uosenstock. He says that Bertram borrowed
fiom him J1CO as a short tlmo loan. This
happened to ho all the money possessed by
him at the time. It Is Kosenstock's candidly
expressed opinion that ho was nulto fortunate
In not having more cash by him at tlio
time llcrtram negotiated the loan. As n
sort of security and to reassure Itosen-
stock , Uortram requested him to take charge
of the receipts of the place until he ro-
tLTpcd and to keep the same In his pockut.
Hut the conscientious Uosonstock deposited
them In a bank , and now finds himself let
In for the whole amount of the loan because
the real owners of the saloon attached every
thing In sight , bank account and all.
Information has just reached the friends
of Mrs. K. T. Shields , wife of the abscond
ing dentist , to the effect that she has dis
covered her recreant spouse In Denver , nnd
that they have mutually agreed to kiss and
make up. Shields , It Is understood. Is
the man who a short tlmo since sent his
wlfo to a neighboring town to use her good
business Judgment In selecting a location
for him , nnd subsequently look advantage of
her absence to depart from the city , leaving
a note advising her to return to her parental
homo In Illinois , as they could no longer
llvo together.
The sheriff of Lawrence. Kan. , conveys the
pleasant Information to Lincoln's police ofll-
clals that a man calling himself by the
euphonious name of Dill Duly , but vv'ho Is in
reality James Jones , has broken jail at
that point and Is now headed toward this
state. It Is believed that Mr. Jones onca
lived In Lincoln.

lowed Is not developed , but at any rate at
the tlmo a man named Griffin was seriously
stabbed. This morning Carr waived ex
amination and was bound over In the sum

federal court. On giving the bond ha was
presented with his liberty , and now stren
uously claims that ho Is a victim of petsccu-
tlon at the hands of parties whom ho de
clines to name.
The Intelligence .was received today of the
suicide at the Norfolk Insane asylum of Mrs.

A fair and apparently healthy specimen of
the lieloderma horrtdum , or "Qlla monster , "
was received today at the geological depart
ment of the State university. This Is the
largest and ugliest lizard found In the United
States. Its bite Is deadly and Its favorite
menu consists principally of boiled eggs. The
monster reptile was enclosed In two thick
nesses of wire netting as a probable pre
caution agalnt Inquisitive postal clerks , ex
press messengers and baggage men. As a
further precaution the box was attached to
upright supports by which It could bo safely
handled. Its colors are marked and brilliant ,
this particular specimen having adopted the
well known Insignia of Princeton college ,
orange and black. In experimenting with this
reptile Prof. Shuefcldlaa once bitten. In
describing Its venomous nature he says that
It Is only by the most skilled medical as
sistance that a person once bitten can be
saved. A now wire cage has been built at the
university for the reptile , and he will be
kept on exhibition at the state museum.
Mary Sturey Is tiling the Hock Island Uoll-
road company for $3,090. The trial Is before
a jury In Judge Tlbbet's court. She alleges
In her petition that the company has dam
aged her property that amount , said property
consisting cf a lot In Houtz I'lncc addition.
She avers that If the road would only keep
Its track In one place she might endure the
annoyance with some degree of complacency ,
but It Is being continually shifted from ono
point on her land to another. Defendants
claim that the lot Is not worth over $1,000.
They also say that she has taken advantage
of the elding on her lot to start a coal yard ,
and has never removed from the place , but
continues to reside there and enjoy the bene
fits or tlio location.

Is being sued In the district court by Cella V.
Shyrock for n claim against the company for
his death. The defendant association an
swers that the deccdant's death was not cauie < l
by accident , and also that he misrepre
sented his physical and mental condition when
