CHICAGO. Nov. 7. After n firm opening
on better cobles , wheat broke slmi-ply today
on free Belling nnd closed &c lower for Mny.
May corn closed Uo lower , Muy oats Ho
lower nnd provisions at light declines. On
this light display ot strcnBth enrly there
WOH nn Immense umount of wheat for Bale
and the pressure was BO general that the
market could not absorb It , even In tilt-
face of the firm cables. There was an ex
pectation of a large Increaue In the world's
visible supply , and the amount put afloat
last week by exporting countries wn about
2.003 bu. In excess of the weekly require
ments. At noon Ilrndstrcet's came In , show-
Inff an Increase In the world's visible sup
ply. After a rally , the market again
turned weak on the free realizing and fell
to 6SHc for May and GS'&c ' for December ,
closing at those figures.
The corn market was neglected to a large
extent for the more active dealings In the
neighboring wheat pit. It wan firm at the
start , but weakened with wheat In splta of
email receipts. May opened Irregularly nt
from Cllic to GHc , declined to W } c and
closed with sellers at 50',4c.
Another quiet nesslon was passed In the
oat market. The fluctuations were gov
erned by corn principally. May started nt
82 > ic , sold down to from 32 } c to 32lie and
clotted nt 32'ic. '
Heavy receipts of hogs and n prospective
continuance of such a movement caused
weakness In provisions. Offerings from
packers were heavy mid longs sold also.
Compared with Monday's clos'ns prices pork

WEDNESDAY , Nov. 7.
As usual on the day following nn election
ecelpts were- light , but US curs In nil.
During the past three days only about half
.s many cattle arrived as during the same
hree days last week. Hog supplies , how-
> ver , htive Increased over 3,000 , head und
heep nearly 6,000 hcail.
There was another strong , active cattle
market today. With the sharp falling off
n supplies noted , favorable news from the
east and an Improved demand for shipping
account , tn addition to the usual good In
quiry from local slaughterers , sellers were
able to realize fully lOc more per hundred
for their cattle than they could have ob-
alned on Tuesday. There were several
lunches of very good cornfed beeves , one
oad of 1,537-lb. steers , good enough to go to
nn eastern shipper , nt J3.10 , nnd another
oad of 1,336-lb. steers brought J5. Very
common to very good half fatted natives
; old nt from $2.75 up to 4SO : , while several
oads of fairish western rangers brought
! 3.25 and $3.43. There was a good , healthy
undertone to the trade throughout and by
loon nearly everything of any consequence
lad changed.
The cow market was Indifferently sup
plied , both ns to quantity and quality , but
hat did not hinder buyers from paying-
fully a dime more than Tuesday for tne-
llum 1 to good cows. There was nn nctlve
, lemaml \ from all sources , nnd the few loads
lere soon passed over the scales to the
dark and bloody beyond. " Calves have
jeen comlntr in freely for some time and
irlces have dropped back n few notches.
Hut little change , however , has been noted
ti the maiket for bulls , stags and rough
stock generally.
Business In stackers" and feeders was
somewhat neglected , but as far as It went
' trading was on the basis of steady prices ,
the more desirable stock selling firm nnd
: he commoner stock steers and heifers hard
to sell at any price at all. Good to choice
feeders are quotable at ? J.COJJ3.:3 ; fair to
; oed , J2.2302.CO , and common grades from

GREAT" " BATTLES.
Ancient und Modern VTnrH niul the Num
bers Engaged.
Without doubt , of all the battles rccordcc
In modern history , says the Brooklyn Eagle
the longest and sternest , as well as ono In
which most men were engaged , was the
memorable battle of Lelpslc , October 1C , IS
and 19 , 1813 , called by the Germans the battle
.
tle of the nations. The number of troops
engaged Is variously estimated by different
writers at from 136,000 to 190,000 on the
side of Napoleon I , nnd from 230,000 to 290-
000 on that of the allies under Prince
Schwartzenherg , Dlucher and Oernadottc. In
this awful battle the slain on both sides
amcunted to 60,000 , and thousands of the
wounded law for days around the city. In
the battle of Koniggratz , or Sadowa , July 3
1SCC , fought during the "Seven Weeks' War , '
the allied Austrian and Saxon troops en
gaged amounted lo about 200,000 men , while
the Prussians , under their king , mttsterec
In round numbers 200,000 combatants , The
total loss to the Austrlans , etc. , amounted
to about 40,000 men , while that of the Prus
sians was 10,000.
If we go back to the melees of ancient
days , wo Ilnd It stated that at one fought at
Tours In 732 between the Franks nnd the
Saracens from 350,000 to 376,000 men were
killed on the field. This would , of course
mean that many more mon were engagct
than at Lelpslc. In a battle mentioned In
II Chronicles , between Asa , king of Judali
and Zerah , king of Ethiopia , we arc told thai
the former had an army of a thousand thous
and , or 1,000,000. Canon Ilawllnson observea
that this statement does net exceed the num
bers of other oriental armies. Darius Codo-
mannus brought Into the field n force o ;
1,040,000 men near Arbela , where ho was
finally defeated by Alexander the. Great , 331
n. C. Xerxes , too , as Prof. Rawllnson says
crossed Into Greece with certainly above
1,000,000 combatants , and Artaxerxes Mne-
inon collected 1,260,000 to meet the attack o
the younger Cyrus.
Hud u Serious Time of It.
While In Chicago , Mr. Charles L. Kahler ,
a prominent shoo merchant of Oca Molnes
Iowa , had quite a serious time of U. Ho took
such a severe cold that he could hardly talker
or navigate , but the prompt Use of Chamber
lain's Cough Remedy cured him of hla colt
so quickly that others at the hotel who hat
bad colds followed his example , and half a
dozen persons ordered It from the nearest
drug store. They were profuse In their
thanks to Mr. Kahler for telling them how to
cure a bad cold so quickly. For sale by

The Treasury department at Washington
Is preparing to spend between (50,000 ant
$100,000 to give the people of the United
States a more artistic paper currency , says
Harper's Weekly. Of course , any estimate
of the probable cost of changes In design
of the treasury cotes and certificates Is nec
essarily vague and unsatisfactory. And tea
a billion-dollar country the amount to be
„
spent Is small. If It were $200-
000 , considering the results to be
attained. Hut the great American
public usually wants to know of any public
work Just what It cost ; and as nearly as
an estimate can be formed at the prescn
time , the reform Inaugurated under Secre
tary Carlisle by Chief Johnson , of the bureau
of engraving and printing , will cost at leas
$00,000. There are tblrty-elx designs to bo
changed eventually ; though the present plan
contemplates the experimental change ot bu
six the designs for the silver certificates
of the denominations ot $1 , $2 , | 5 , $10 , $50 and
(100. If these changes are acceptable to
the public , the others will follow.
"While down In the southwestern part o

mcrs , editor of the Chlco ( Cal. ) Enterprise
"I had an attack of dysentery. Having heard
of Chamberlain's Colic , Cholera and Dlar

doies of It completely cured me. Now I am
a champion of that remedy for all stomach
and bowel complaints. " For sale by drug
