STRANGE STORY FROM SAN FRANCISCO
Mrnllliy JleiUlenl < > l ModeHto. Cnl , , Comoi
lluck After ItcltiK Ilecluroil Uititl bjr
tlio Court linn A way from
u. Illff Law Suit.
SAN F11ANCI9CO , Sepl. 23. Dr. Thomas
Tynan , the Modesto physician and capitalist ,
whom the courts have declared to bo dead ,
and whose J200,000 estate * Ima boon dlbtrlti-
tiled among his rcl.itlvi's , arrived In San
Francisco this morning. Ho was met at
the Oakland ferry by a number ot frlemla
and business associates , who had been null-
led i > t his coming by parties vihn went to
lleno , Nev. , to meet lilin , Though pale and
slightly- emaciated , the aged gentleman ap
peared In fair health. To reporters ho re-
'used ' to talk to any extent. He said , how
ever , tltat he hnd been In Boston nil the time
slnco Ills strange disappearance , ami that the
reason for his sudden leaving over two years
ago was to avoid the annoynncn ot litigation
iin by hli ! stepdaughters to recover prop
erty which they iilItKcd belonged to them ,
f mills belonging to the estate or their de
ceased mother. Tynan's flrst wife , having
been appropriated by Tynan , as they say.
There was an affectionate meeting between
[ ho doctor and his present \ > lfe , who has
been searching for him so long , and who had
conic to mourn him as gone.
The old man said hu would probably have
never returned had not the spiritualist , Sla
ter , discovered him In Itostcm and brought
111 in on to Itono. Slater , who claims to have
boon guided by spirits , claims the $5iOOO re
ward offered by Mrs. Tynan for Information
ot her husband's whereabouts. lr. Tynan
was the heaviest property owner In Modesto.
IIo was also a director of the Grangers bank
in this city , and well known to people all
over the I'aclflo cojst , among whom he had
been a familiar llgure for ye.ira. his largo
wealth , bis prolonged vigorous strength hav
ing made him conspicuous. He was over
7& years old when he disappeared. On the
16th day of October lie was In the Grangers
bank In this city , and then there was paid
over to him the sum or $5,000. From about
that day until now he has been supposed to
be dead. His wife offered a reward of $5,000
to any person who should fnrnlsh Information
thai he was alhe. No such Information
came.
came. What was temporarily supposed < o be the
re in a I us of Dr. Tynan came to light , some
times In one place and sometimes In another.
The detectives , however. Insisted that they
had traced Tynan to Sacramento , where IIB
bought a ticket to New York under the name
of Thomas S. Stanley , but further than this
they could not trace him. His wife searched
for many months for him , and finally con
cluded ho was dead , and on the showing
made Judge Minor of Stanislaus county
decided that he was dead.
John Slater , a lr > cal spiritualist , gave to
the Grangers bank the flrst authentic In
formation about Tynan a few days ago. He
said that the missing physician was In lleno ,
and asked that some one be sent with him
to Reno. Accordingly Henry McCormack ,
who Is connected with the bank and who
knew Dr. Tynan , went to Reno with Slater.
The Identification was complete. Slater
bays lie knew Tynan , whom ho had met east
of the Rocky mountains. As to finding the
doctor. Slater ascribes It all to the spirit
form of Ur. Tynan's first wife , He says :
"On May 28 I was writing a letter In my
sulto of rooms at the Clarendon hotel In
Boston. It was a letter to my wife. It
was about 7:30 : o'clock. Suddenly a woman's
form stood over me , distinctly as could be.
'I am Rose Marvin Tynan , ' It said. 'Co to
No. - street tonight , ' sure ; and you wfll
see my husband , Ur. Thomas E. Tynan. '
"I went Immediately ; 'I ' did not wait to
finish my letter. The number given was
that of a well known boarding house In a
central location , not more than twenty min
utes' walk from my hotel" . The street and
number I have promUod not to reveal.
When I rang the bell , I asked for Dr Tynan.
They told mo he wns not there , hut \\hlle I
was talking he came to the top of the stairs
and spola to me. I took htm to the hotel
and ws talked together until after midnight.
Then ho went away and I inado no effort to
restrain him. For three weeks 1 saw htm
occasionally. Then he left lloston und I
returned soon after to California. I saw-
Mrs. Tynan , but she would not believe that
I had seen the doctor. She believes It now.
Early in August I went back nnd found the
doctor again. We went to New York to
gether and on Monday , the 17th lust. , we left
there , bound this way. We ttopped ono
( Jay In Chicago and reached Reno , where I
left Dr. Tynan Saturday. "
Slater. It IB understood , has the promise
of $5,000 and expenses. Mrs. Tynan would
not pay that sum until she saw the doctor.
Dr. Tynan will now take steps In the
