THE OMAHA DAILY REE : SUNDAY , SEPTEMBER 23 , 189i 15 CONDITION OF OMAHA'S ' TRADE Business In n Jobbing Way Quito Aotlvo in Sams Lines. It goes to show that there Is returning confidence In spite ot the hard times and toss of crops , nnd that the business men ot this section ot the west ore not discouraged , but are going ahead , not withstanding there are obstacles In the road , As pointed out aweek ago , there are certain lines ot business from which but Ilttlo can bo expected when the crops are light , but on the other hand the staple lines are more act ive lhan was anticipated. A good many Job bers wcro looking for a light business even In such lines as groceries , dry goods and boots and shoes , but In this- they have been happily dUappolntod , The opening ot the present month found the shelves of the mer chants almost bare of goods , as a result of the conservative policy In buying that has been the rule during HID past year. It soon became evident to the merchants that while their -business might not bo so largo as on somd former seasons , there was bound to b ; BOIIIO business , and they have been forced to stock up to meet the demand for the. fall and winter Roods. A good many ot Iho largest retail merchants In the state- who have been accustomed to buy In the east had | nit otl placing tholr orders until It was too late to go cast for the goods , and they have been forced to transfer their bunlness to local houses , thus helping to swell the volume ol business. Omaha dry goods houses claim that they are now sending out moro goods than they ever did before , even during tlu most prosperous seasons , The coming of cooler weather during the iarly part of the week had a 'tendency tc Mart up business a little In some other lines , Thus the hardware jobbers reported an In- crcaso In the sales of seasonable goods and r better outlook for business during the nc\l feww eka to come. At the opening of theCallforlnla fn season last spring the commission men Omaha organized a fruit auction and I nuguralcd dally sales ot fruit. This net I waa taken because the shippers of Callfon favor ( hat method ot disposing of th fruit , and as markets In the east h adopted tho. plan It seemed necessary tl Omnha should do the same. The fruit si son Is now -well advanced and It Is posstl to give BO mo Idea of tlio results of tl method of disposing of fruits. Up to the present date 1G9 cars of d fornla fruit have passed through the Oma auction house , the total salea ot wh ! amount to 3121.GS7. Thla largo amount fruit has not all been consumed tn Oma ! but hits been distributed from this pate to Ihe smaller markets , mostly In Iowa a Nebraska , though shipments have been m : to other stales. The handling- this lai Amount of fruit has given employment qulto a. large force of men and the trade ' upon the whole , of moro Importance to 1 city than thoa : outside of the business mil Imagine. Omnlu commission -men were , of the op Ion that there -were not enough whole * dealers In fruit In this city to support auction house alone , and accordingly tl * established what Is known In the trade an "open auction ; " that Is , ona In wh any person can buy fruit. The very fl auction that was held -was attended by ' tin peddlers In tha city , and it coon beca evident that they were bound to cut an I portant figure in the trade. Ai tha sea : progressed this phase of the question raine better understood. The peddlers not only buying the Inferior fruit , but tl lisvo gradually extended their oporatl until the regular fruit commission tinu complain ( hat they are ruining the buslni The peddlers , after making their purchat load ( ho fruit on to wagons nnd carry around to the retail stores and fruit sta and soil It out at an advance of 5 to ctnti per box. As the retailer pays tli cash they can afford to aell at a miall mar am ) still make what to them Is good wai They also load up their wagons and Btal them on the itrcet In th early morn whom the grocers are accustomed to c ( lo buy tholr dally supplies * ot the nut gardeners and furnish tha trade right un tha noses ot the wholesalers. All this trade formerly -wont to tha t ularwholesale houses , and U ti safe to that the peddler * have just about rul tha local business of Ihe regular deal 1 during the pait summer. This Is not at surprising , as other cities where open i tlaus ara held hive eip rieuced the si Th bowftrar , ore not with the local -business , but are reaching out after tha shipping trade. They have mada serious Inroads upon thn trade ( tha wholesale houses In nearby towns , such as Fremont , Blair and Tekamah. The jobbers thought that or not allowing any buyer to purchase less th.iti good round lots ot fruit at the auction hou-irn would shut out nil the smaller peddlers , nnd tluy would hare to come lo the jabbers to get their supplies , the fiamo 49 frrmorly. In this they were mistaken , iu the peddlers combine , and If ono cannot handle a single lot , lie divides It up among his friends. It was also provided that every purchaser should deposit $25 tvlth tha auction company before being allowed to maka a bid , so as to Insure the carrying out of contracts. The peddlers got around this by having one of their number make the de posit as required , and then ho docs the buying for the crowd. So far as the regular fruit houses are con cerned , there Is no disputing the fact that the auction has proved a great detriment. On the other hand , there Is" no doubt but what It Is a good thing for the grower and shipper of the fruit. It brings all the buy- era together and Increases the competition , and Insures him better prices than could bo expected at a private sate. The best Inter ests of the grower would appear to be on the side ot an open auction , hut It would look at the present tlmo as It the closed auction -was the only thing that would pro tect the regular fruit houses. Whether the Irult men -will take any action to protect themselves against the peddlers the coming season remains to be seen , but whatever they do , the fruit auc tion will be continued In some form or other , as the auction method ot disposing ot Irult has come to stay. L1VB STOCK MARKET. A fair amount of business tvas transacted at South Omaha last -week. The receipts of cattle were larger than during the previous week by some 8,700 head , but there was a decrease. In the arrivals of hog ! amounting to about 5,500. The packing houses are experiencing no little difficult ! In securing as many good beef cattle a ; are required by their trade , and while thcj are paying better prices than other mar kets , tlio cattle do not seem to come here. Several times during the past few day : western cattle shippers have divided theli shipments , sending one-half here , and th ! balance to Kansas City , with the resull that the cattle brought to Omaha wouli bring 25c and 35c per 100 marc than tin others. On some days ot the past wccl there have hardly been enough fat stecri here to. make a real test ot the market while on other days there has been a fal ; run , but everything received has sold rsadllj at very satisfactory prices. Prices havi ranged very even , there being little changi from day to day , but If anything the mar kct Is a little firmer at the close than I was at the opening of the weel : . The market on cows and mixed stock ha been In good sliapa all the week , there belli ; an active demand and a very fair supply The business doing In stocliers and feeder has been la/gc , and the country has been < liberal buyer , though U baa kept dealer busy to keep the supply down , the receipt have been so large. Owing to the larg supply the market had a downward tendenc during the latter part ot the week , an prices dropped 15c and 20c. The hog market has experienced a decide drop during the week In spite of the fallln off in the receipts. A short time ago ther was a very active demand from all quarter for provisions , and every one was buyln under the Impression that the market wa going still higher. Some were predlctln that hogs would reach $7 In the fto future. All ot a sudden the excitement an desire to buy cameto an end , and as th market turned downward the demand fc hog products has fallen oft very material ! : Two weeks ago England was a most acttv buyer , and English cuts were In great 1 ( mand. but at the present lime there is a ! most no demand. In ( he tearae way th south was a large buyer , but with provision It Is. the same as with all other commod ties , no ono wants to- buy -when the marki Is dropping and the demand has fallen o from that source as well. Some of tt wise ones In ( he trade are now cpmmcnclii ( o predict that the Hoc market , under U present light demand lor the product , wl drop until hogs will bo selling at this mai kct for $4.50 to $5. " The sheep market does not show muc change : from day to day , and prices ai .about the same now as they wera a. wee ago. Omaha is not a 'very large shee market , but there Is a demand here for fair number of good muttons , and It Is a every day demand , which In the course i a month would amount up to quite a nun ber ot head. head.ht. ht. As a result wheat shows n loss of Hoper bu , . wjillo September corn dropped 2o and May lo of their previous value. Pro visions are lower by So for perk , 17J4c In lard nnd 20c In ribs. For the first time slnco August C wheat la worth more money ha a No. 2 corn. Wheat opened quiet , but firm , at a small ractlonn ! advance. The firmness was In onscqucnce of the Inspected receipts hero : urtilng out much leas thin had been esti mated. The estimated receipts were 160 : ars , and the number actually Inspected OS cars. The general condition oC the pcculatlvo situation was uncnangoJ. The weakest feature of the day's n-ews was the eavlness of the northwestern receipts , which at Minneapolis and Duluth amounted to 010 car loads , compared with only 650 on the corresponding day of the year before. The speculative business was local In character and rather light In volume. Fearing the probability of a heavy Increase In the visible supply , the crowd was bearish and all the moro Inclined to sell on account of the weakness of corn. Decccmber opened at 57We , and sagged wearily to Glc. which was the price when the minute warning bell sounded Its caution to prepare for the close. The desire to sell Increased and V&C & was reached near the end , with from H54c , the closing price. Corn opened firm , but did not long remain so. It gradually became weak , then weaker , and was weakest at the end. Stop loss orders were reached at c decline , below 52a for May , and as the closing value was lJ2ic , there were numerous opportunities tor the stop loss orders to come Into play. Tha weakness was principally In consequence of tha pressure to sell September , which , for the first time this season , sold , at a discount , as compared with May , and for the first tlmo In about two months , cash corn was cheaper than cash wheat. The receipts wore 357 cars by rail and 20,400 bu. bj canal. September was worth 52c neai the opening , and G0o at the close , while May declined Ic from the highest to the lowest price made today. Oats were active from the beginning to the end. Selling was still very urgent , mostb long stuff , and prices were agsln lowered Tha first symptoms , of the decline were no ticeable at the start , when brokers fm Cudshy started to raid the market with heavj offerings. The general disposition was tc close , and the prlca of May declined frorr 34&tc , the opening price , to 31c , the lowest point , and at which price the market closed n decline of % c. October ranged from29V4 < to 28o and closed % o under the latter price Hogs receipts being light and the gralt market rather firm at tha opening the firs few transactions In the provision marke showed some steadiness : That state of feeellni was soon exchanged for one of extremi weakness. Stop orders on the decline wen reached In great plenty from the appearanci of the offerings and the packers , led b ; brokers for John Cud ah y , made It easy fo stop orders to be reached. There was ver ; Ilttlo recovery at the close , from the botton prices , .although a good deal ot covering o shorts was In progress during the last flf Icon minutes oC the session.
