the Britannia creasing the finishing line
one minute and forty-live seconds ahead
of the Volkjrle.
The regatta opens the fortnight of yacht
racluc on the Clyde nnd will glvo the ofll-
cers and seamen of the Vlcllant a fair op
portunity of judging of the ability of the
three most dangerous competitor ! ) which the
American sloop will moot on this side of the
Atlantic. The Hrltannla Is cutter-rigged ,
rated at 1G1 tons and Is owned by the
prince of Wales. The Satanlta Is cuttcr-
i-lggod , rated at 102 tons , and Is the prop
erty of Mr. A. D. Clarke. The Valkyrlo Is
cutter-rigged and wns formerly rated at 118
tons. She Is owned by Lord Dunrnvun.
In last year's regatta , over a course very
much similar to the ono sailed over today ,
estimated to mcnsiiro forty-eight miles , the
Mrltnnnla , Satanlta , Valkyrlo and Iverna
started. The Satanlta then allowed thn
Hrltannla ono minute eight seconds , the
Valkyrlo two minutes and the Iverna seven
minutes forty seconds. The Britannia won
in three hours nljie minutes thlrtv-two seconds
ends , the Satanlta was s > econd In three
hours twelve minutes twenty seconds and
the Valkyrlo wasi third In three hours four
teen minutes thirty-seven seconds. The
Iverna gave up the race when It was about
half over.
It Is stated the Vigilant will compete In
the Mudhook Yacht club regatta , which
takes place on Thursday and Friday next ,
and that she will race for the Mulr chal
lenge cup and bo steered by Not Hcrshoft
as an amateur , with Lord Dunraven and
George L. Watson , the yacht designer ,
steering the Valkyrie , Jamleson steering
the Britannia and Robert Ure having the
stick of the Satanlta. It Is under'tood
that the Messrs. Gould accept this as a
compromise of the Mudhook Yacht club
rule that the steersmen In this race must
