There has pribafy never been a time when the outlook f3r an abundant corn crop was any better at Ibis present stage of Its growth. As a refttlt country merchants are expressing more con fidence in tbe future of trade than at any time before since tbe commencement of tbe jcor In some sections of tbe slate farmers vrre Equally preparing to move out. being tSuroupHy discouraged by tbe drouth. Tbe c im.ng of tbe rains has relieved their fears .nd the farmers -wfll remain , with the pros- j"t of having large crops to harvest. \wi these facts before them the Job- Vcrs sf the city cannot well keep from feel- 1-g very cheerful over tbe future of trade. Ni ons anticipate * any great rush or boom , as trade will undoubtedly remain rather quiet 83 long as tbe general conditions pre- va.ing In the c untry at large are so very unfavorable Merchants will be very likely to foil w a conservative policy so loci ; as the cry of hard times Is heard in the land , end few will attempt to branch out very fjr tbe present. 'What tbe jobbers expert is a continuation of tbe present steady trade which they are now en- Jry.ng , followed by a brisker demand vltn tbe corn crop Is secure. OMAHA'S FRCIT MARKET. Tbe present month has witnessed & great grow'h In tie fruit market of tbU city. Tbe opening of an auction house has been tbe main stimulus and has been productive of far more goad to tbe trade thsn was an- tirlpsted. Tbe wholesale fruit merchants of tbe larger towns as far east as tbe Mls- Elss ppl river have found it more convenient t3 send their orders to this city for Cali fornia IruSt than to try to get it direct from the coast or from Chicago. In con sequence Omaha has suddenly jumped into the front rank as a fruit jobbing pclnt , and tbe season has only just commenced. As tlie season advances there is good reason to ripect an Increase in the amount of busi ness transacted In this Branch of the job bing trade. Tbe season has opened with prices un usually low. In fact lower than ever be fore , and this will have a tendency to cumulate tbe consumption in spite of tbe Inclination on the part of consumers to cut off luxuries. During tbe past week cties like Fort Dodge , Des Molnes. Dav- rnport. Red Oak and Sioux City , Iay St. J sepb. Mo. . jid Lincoln and Beatrice , J\eb. , have been large buyers on this mar- tct. BAXK CLEARINGS. During tbe past week Omaha has shown a decrease In clearings of 15 per cent , as com pared with the same week last year. As against this decline Minneapolis gained IS per cent , but most other western cities , like Omaha , show a decrease , as St. Paul C per cent , Denver 47 , and St. Joseph 22. The decrease for tbe whole country is IS Tier cent , or S per cent .more than Omaha's decrease. The following will show tbe clearings for rach day of tbe past week at this point : Monday S B77.773.13 Tuesday _ - K3L033.4S AVednesday 70.827.59 Thursday , . _ 802.164.09 Friday . _ , _ 941.US-09 Saturday _ 7S2.729.54 Total . . .H .HAJ5 AJ5 Commercial Club and 3Lmmf ctnre.r Ai- KoeiaUon Should JJe Harmonious. Mr. W. H. Roberton , manager of R. G. Dun & Ca."t mercantile agency , says : "I was present at tbe meeting of the ex ecutive committee of tbe Commercial club lost Tuesday and was very much interested in the discussion led by President Page of tbe Manufacturers and Consumers associa tion. Tbe executive committee was appar ently very much relieved when a shrewd lawyer raised a technical objection to the consideration of the question at issue and BO permitted the episode to escape through one of the side doors. Nevertheless , what Mr. Page and ether members said found a lodgment in the minds of their hearers , and while he did not succeed in committing the committee to his ideas , they will not be forgotten. "The Commercial club cannot fall to ap- preclate tbe Important work accomplished by tbe Manufacturers and Consumers asso ciation. It W3uld be both proper and profit able t = r our growing club to place Itself squarely on the home patronage platform If it has not already done so. Direct re- sul * = , benefiting everybody , ore certain to f 'Low a persistent and consistent advocacy of tte principle , Tbe central organization of the Manufacturers of Nebraska has en tered upon an extensive campaign for tbe "benefit of home industries it will hold a eeries of meetings and clve banquets at various Nebraska towns and cities for tbe express purpose of Interesting citizens to home products and home manufactures. At c ch banquet the entire menu will be made up of Nebraska products , and in each city and town local home patronage clubs will be organized and encouraged. The Manufac turers and Consumers association has done enough already to win a prominent -plz.ee among business organizations , and It is just beginning its career of usefulness. "Tbe jobbers will organize another excur sion out into the state next week. Tbe re sults of the last have already been felt. At the excursion committee meeting the other flay Chairman Weller struck a keynote when tie reminded his fellow merchants that Omaha was not securing all the trade to which she is entitled ra Nebraska and west ern Iowa It Is well enaugb to reach out tnto otber territory for an that can be ob- ed , but the trade of western Iowa and Nebraska , the richest agricultural region of the world. Is enough of itself to quadruple Omaha's business in a year U It were cap- tared. The first thing every jobber in this city should undertake todsy is tbe conquest of the immediate tributary country , and this Is jK > sible If proper effort is exjxnded at the right time. IA. j > er onal acquaintance with tbe traders hereabouts is one losg step teyard the rchlpveraent of results in this filrection , "Trade it better and hopes are vastly 1m- prorod. " SXOW , CIICKCI1 4 CO'S VIEWS. n ln of the TTtk lU-rlre Tr de at TTell m tire win c Crop * . Albert Aodriano , local Kn ; > erintendent of Snow. Church & Co. ' * mercantile agency. writes ; "The abundance of moisture , the. Trarm nlchts , the cloudy dar of the past few weeks , have been what may be termed Meal corn weather. Heavy rains have fallen In most parts of thl * Ftate , and crops are in prime condition.Vllh a continu ance of this weather for two or three week * more corn will be high eoongh to shade the ground , and unless we have an un usually dry season u large crop is amply well assured. "Trade , like a barometer , is affected by the weather. The exceedingly favorable conditions which have prevailed of late have had a very perceptible influence on the number and Blze of orders from the coun try. Country merchants are ordering quite lll > rally for fall delivery , and wholesalers are reasonably well satisfied with the out look. Trade in some lines rtlll continues dull. Retailers rej ort only a fair business , but wholesalers in most lines report a very encouraging condition of affairs. Clothing and dry goods merchants and manufac turers of overalls and Bhlrtings say that orders are coming in quite welt A large number of these orders are for future de livery , and provided crop prospects con tinue as good as they are at present will no doubt be filled. Should affairs , however , take an unfavorable turn there is no doubt that a large numl > er of them will be coun termanded. Should everything remain fa vorable and the orders that are now com ing in be filled , business for the last six months of this year will show up very welL Last year orders came in In large numbers , but were canceled before the sea son had advanced very far , making the fall business show Tip very poorly. "The fact of the matter is,1 said a leading jobber. 'that merchants are not anticipating busi ness , and there is a growing tendency to put in only sufficient poods to meet all reasonable demands. Dealers learned a very severe lesson last year. They had overstocked on many lines , and were un able to unload their goods when they needed money. It is my opinion , and I believe I am right , when 1 say that the custom of ordering In large quantities in anticipation of their wants will not lie in dulged in to such an extent in the future as it has in the past. I am satisfied , and every other wholesaler should be. that it is better for eveir one concerned. There is no necessity for a small dealer to carry a large line in any one class of goods. If he cannot unload it he accuses the job- Iwr of selling him something that is not salable ; if he does , it takes him so long to do it that he often has to ask extensions to meet his "bills. On the -other hand , by this method the jobber is forced to keep on hand large quantities of goods and -order far in advance. Should'there be no demand for the line on which he has bought espe cially heavy he sustains a loss. If the re tailer develops the inclination to buy oft- ecier and in small quantities the whole saler will not itnd It nscEssary to - anticipate pate these orders. This custom may be carried to excess , but no doubt , as trade gradually settles down to a normal condi tion , these matters will adjust themselves to suit circumstances. " "Boot and shoe men report quite fair trade , -with prospects of a good fall busi ness. Grocers are doing a fair business. In hardware trade is .not as active as it was last month. Dry goods men have had a very fair business during the entire spring , and orders now coming in give hope of a good trade for the fall. "In summing up the situation It is safe to say that everything depends upon the corn crop. Retailers and jobbers through out the country are dealing In futures. It is with all of them a question of corner or no corn , trade or no trade. If favora ble conditions continue to prevail this crop will be the largest ever had in the state , and It is for this reason that every chance in the -weather affects business favoralily or unfavorably , as the case may be. The tariff will be settled before congress - adjourns journs , and by fall matters will have ad justed themselves to the new conditions. It is to be hoped by that time labor trou bles win have been satisfactorily disposed of. "With these conditions and a good corn crop , with a consummation of the local projects now under consideration , business at Omaha and in Nebraska -will once more reach the high level of prosperity. It should be re membered. of course , 'that these are pros pects and only prospects. Trade at this time of the year usually Incomes some what dull , and continues so during the summer months. This year will be no ex ception to the rule and indeed things may lie a little bit duller even than in previous years , but -when the time romes for busi ness to pick up , as it will in the fall , then the renewal of trade in Nebraska vein be the certain result of a good crop and a set tled condition of affairs , just as certain as poor business and continued hard times will t > e the result of crop failure and un settled condition of affairs. It is not my purpose , nor is it In keeping with my duty. to take an optimistic view of the future. and for this reason I he been particu larly careful in this instance to give both sides of the argument , cause and effect. and I do not think that the greatest pessi mist can honestly say that conditions and prospects are not just as favorable as they have been pictured in the foregoing. The early weakness was attributable to the passage of the Hatch bill yecterday In the house aad tbe elevator situation aim cut doinething of a figure. The early strength was due In a measure to tbe better cables and more Inquiry for cash wheat , A pri vate Liverpool cable " "Id weather was too wet and asked for offers of wheat. A better Inquiry from the otber side was said to prevail for cash wheat and two lots were reported worked here today. A sale of 70,000 bu. "What hurt tbe trade more than anything el . however , was the tow market 01 the otber side'el the water. Liverpool was re ported tbe lowest of the year under tbe In- flmtDoe of excessive KGitplfea , and this bml a tendency to paralyse the shipping unJ tx- Jiort trade. Dressed beef men have had tt pretty much alt their own way , a--'l for the most part they hsve been eJta ppraUnuly Indifferent buyers. Heavy cattle , pa-tic Ur- ly if coarse or lacking style , wrre neglected , and the green and half fatted stock has t ee > u hard to move at anything like remunerative prices. About the only cattle that have been in any demand whatever were the handy , well fatted steers welching from 1.000 up to 1,306 Ibs. These did not puffer M > much , but the ceneral market for fat cittle closed IT.c to SOc lower than last week. With very little outside supjwt. prices jnled rather uneven an week. Light supplies caused a moderate boom on > lonlay and Tuesday , but tbe market went to pieces Wednesday , and durln : the latter half of tbe week It was very dull and featureless. Today's trade -was very satisfactory from whatever standpoint viewed. Supplies were light as to quantity , and rather indifferent as to quality , while tbe demand lacked life. Handy fat steers , such as suited the dressed beef trade , sold at good , steady prices , but rough , heavy cattle and grassy lipbt graces were discriminated against badly and hard to work off to advantage. There was a dull , weak undertone to tbe trade throughout , but about everything found a. purchaser before the close. The cow market was a fair sample of what it has been all week. Supplies have been Insignificant , and , while dry-fed stock has been scarce and in good demand at firm prices , the common grassy grades that have made up tbe bulk of tbe offerings have gone lower from day to day. The calf market has been considerably demoralized , but prime veals showed same Improvement toward the close of the week. Ftt bulls have sold all right , but thin , rough stock has been a drug on the market. On account of the Improved condition of pastures the feeder trade picked up nicely during the early part of the week. Prices advanced 20c to SOc , and the supply did not begin to fill the demand. Of late , however , the depression in the fat cattle market has hurt the business some , and part of this ad vance has b en lost. There is still a very fair demand , however , and prices are quotably - bly lOc to lac better than a week aco.
