Opening trades Hhowed from > 4e to ' ,4c advance , and almost Imemdlntcly sold up nnothcr % c , reacted % c nnd closed steady , Tlio early ItrcnRtli was attributed to the liberal de- creaHC on ocean passage of 1,320,000 bu. and to dry weather talk , the steadier Huropcan Cables and to advices from the other side that shipments of Argentine wheat were fallIng - Ing off. Iloom traders bought at the start , whllo offerings were very limited , but on n little realizing the price sagged , but" rallied later when the visible supply wan announced thowlng n much larger decrease than antici pated 1,9115,000 bu. Hcports from the west - Iowa and Kansas mainly stated that rain was needed badly In many sections nnd crop prospects were not nt all bright. There was also Injury In TenncHsee and Missouri. Porn was rather quiet , but generally firm , within % c range. Receipts under the esti mate nnd unfavorable crop reports were the Btrcngthcnlng factors. Oats were uctlvo nnd decidedly firmer on reports of dry weather nnd covering by shorts. Prices advanced from ? ic to lc , and finished near the top. Provisions declined slightly at the start on heavy hog receipts , reacting later on n scarcity of offerings. The market was very dull and slow. Compared with Saturday night July pork and ribs are unchanged nnd July lard Cc lower. The demand for vessel room was light , but rather steady at 10 for corn to Buffalo and ll/tc to Port Huron. NEW YORK , June 4. The week opened on the Stock exchange with a fairly active speculation and a strong tone to the trad- Ing. London was a factor In the advancing tendency ot prices , both as a buyer In this market of the arbitrage stocks and also by reason of the Improvement of the American securities on the London Stock exchange. One ot the principal influences of the specu lation wag the unexpected decrease In the St. Paul cnrnlnps for the month of May A toss ot $200,000 at least had been anticipated , and when only about half that amount was reported the short Interest In the stock was a trifle scared and began to cover. Purchases for the railway list In general were also stimulated , but the Industrial stocks did not sympathize In the movement , except To bacco , Distilling , Lead and Cordage , Sugar was notable weak , and on ncavy sales , said to bo mainly to realize profits of the recent advance , declined 24 per cent , to 102V4 , the lower figure Including purchases , which caused a recovery of 2',1 ' per cent , but In the final dealings another selling movement was developed which resulted In a reaction of 1 per cent , the last sale being made at a de cline of 1 per cent on the day. liurllngton was not largely dealt In , but was bought moderately for the Boston account and rose 1 per cent , reacting U per cent In the later dealing. N'orthwest gained Vi per cent and Hock Inland > ,4 per cent. In the rest of the list the volume of business was light , but dur ing the greater part of the day the dealings were strong In tone. Toward the close , however , nn easier tone prevailed and the market closed slightly heavy. The bond market wan generally firm. The Evening Post says : The bulk of to day's transactions were , as usual , confined to a few stocks , the changes elsewhere being made on small tradings. All told , to day's advance \vas considerable , and the fact that Sugar and Chicago Gas hung back was neither surprising nor unfavorable. The Post's London cable says : The stocks were today about steady. The chief feature was n further rise In gill-edge stocks and the recovery In Americans. The last named closed nt the best figures. Louisville made the chief gain. It Is expected that there will bo trouble In the grain trade here , but no failure Is yet announced. Halt a million pounds In gold Is coming from India. This U Important ns It strengthens silver. India exchange Is rising. The supply of cattle was less than WOO head , or about the same as on last Monday nnd the quality was very fair. The market was active nnd generally about lOc higher than Saturday1- Comparatively light supplies made the dressed beef men free buyers , whllo the bullish tone to Chicago advices brought out an active demand frojn shipping nnd export buycM. Fair to choice 1,200 to l.COO In. beeves sold nt from $3.90 to $ UO nnd fair to very good 1,000 to 1,160 Ib. steers brought from $3.7G to $1.10. The trade was tolerably lively from the start to finish , the feeling being firm throughout. A good early clear ance was effected , Good fat cows and heifers were In active demand nt strong prices , , while the common nnd canning grades ruled dull , although prices were not quotably lower than last week. The general calf market was weak nnd on an average about GOo lower than n week ago , except perhaps for the best veals. Hough stock of nil kinds continues In fnlr request nt gcod II rm prices. There was not n very rushing trade In Btockers nnd feeders , but prlcca In general wore firmly held , sales of fair to good stock being largely at from $2.85 to $3.15. The demand wns not overly brisk , but as the supply was not largo the feeling was firm on nil sides. Good to choice feeders are quoted at $3.00fr3.40 , fair to good nt $2.80 ® 3.00 , nnd the commoner grades nt from $2.80 down. Dealers construed It Into a sure Indication of liberal receipts for the balance of the week , and the feeling was consequently rnthcr bearish. A big run and a lower mar ket In Chicago did not help matters any and the buyers experienced little difficulty In getting what hogs they needed at prices averaging a nickel lower than Saturday. The general quality of the offerings was not very good and heavy hogs commanded a slight pre mium , selling at from $4.40 up to $4.50 , whllo common to choice light and light mixed hogs wont at from $4.35 up to $4.45. There was very little change In the market from the opening to the close , but the pens were emptied In good reason.
