SHORT ON COAL.
Street IlalliTity Couipuny Jlny Ilo Com-
IM-lU-iI to Shut Down Homo Lines ,
It wau reported In street railway circles
yontenloy that the company expected
lo be forced to shut down the Harney
street power iiouso early next week on ac
count of the curtailment of the coal supply.
The rumor wua freely circulated among the
conductors and motormen , and come of them
wore In expectation of receiving notice of an
Indefinite lay off.
According to the street railway ofllclals
this report wua premature. Superintendent
Smith nnd Secretary Qoodrlch both agreed
that up to date no such determination had
been arrived at. They had been very for
tunate In obtaining coal thus far , and had
enough ahead at the present time ( o luut
about ten days. If the coal famine lantcd
much longer they might be seriously cm-
! ) arrats ) l , but no more BO than other es
tablishments which required large supplies
of coal.
If It should be necessary to shut down
any part of the system It IB believed that
the Harney street establishment would bo
; ho first to bo Idle. This house furnishes
the power for tlio cable and the Harney
street motor lints and as only ono of these
s considered a paying Institution the * tmt
down would naturally take effect there It
anywhere. U Is also argued that the sus
pension of these lines would not be so ureal
i hardship on tlie public as that of the
cnger lines which reach people who reside
at a greater distance from the center of the
city ,

Messrs. Allen nnil SnclitlcLoii , Iho two
young Americans who made a remurknule
bicycle tour nroiuul the world , celebrated independence -
dependence dny In Aslntlc Turkey In n most
appropriate manner. On July 4 tlicao outer-
pilslng and Intrepid travelers planted tlio
stars anil strlpea on the stimmlt of Mount
Ararat , and there In sight of three of the
most absolute monarchs In the world they
saluted It with a volley trom their revolvers.
The ascent was memorable for two reasons :
Jt was the first time that the mountain had
over been climbed by Americans , and It
was the earliest In the year while the vast
winter snow fields still stretched far down
Its sides that the ascent had ever been
made :
Messrs. Allen and Sachtlcben , nre telling
the story of their Journey rr'omthe'flosphorus
to 1'eklng In a scrleu of papers for the Cen
tury magazine. The chapter In the number
for June Is wholly given up to ah account
of the ascent of Mount Ararat. According
to tradition 'this mountain Is the scene of
two of the most Important events In the
history of the human race. In the sacred
land of Eden , which Armenian legend places
nt Its base , the first human being was born ;
and on Its solitary peak the last human be
ings were saved from an all-destroying flood.
The nomad Kurds , who now feed their ( locks
on Its grassy slopes , hold It In peculiar vener
ation , as the homo of mighty nnd mysterious
Jlnns. So powerful do they believe these
genii to be , and so jealous of their sovereignty
eignty , that they are ready to dispute all
tostlmony and declare that the mountain has
never yet been ascended.
Owing to the hostility of these Kurds , an
escort of zaptlehs was sent wltfi the Ameri
cans by the mutcssarlf of Daya/.ld , to whom
they bore a letter from thu grand vizir of
Turkey. They also succeeded In Inducing an
aged Austrian Tyrolcse , an artist named
Ignaz Ilafll , to accompany them.
"At ten minutes of 11 , o'i the morning of
the"2d of July , " the travelers write , "our
small cavalcade , with the two exasperating
donkeys at the head laden with mats , bags
of provisions , extra clothing , alpenstocks ,
spiked shoes , and cells of stout rope , filed
down the streets of Uayazld , followed by a
curious rabble. As Uayazld lies hidden be
hind a projecting spur of the mountains wo
could obtain no view of the peak Itself until
we had tramped some distance out on
the plain. Its huge giant mass broke upon
us. all at once. We stopped and looked and
looked again. No mountain peak wo have
seen , though several have been higher , has
ever Inspired the feeling which filled us when
we looked for the first time upon towering
Ararat. v
"The plain was strewn \vlth sand and
rocks , with here and there a bunch of tough ,
wiry grass about a foot and a half high ,
which , though early In the year , was partly
dry. It'would have been hot work except
for the rain of the day before and a strong
southeast wind. As It was , our feet were
blistered and bruised , the thin leather sandals
worn at the outset offering very poor protec
tion. The atmosphere being dry , though not
excessively hot , we soon began to suffer
from thirst. Although searched diligently
for wat r , we did not find It till after two
hours more of constant marching , when
at a height of about 6,000 feet , fifty yards ,
from the path , we discerned a picturesque
cascade of sparkling , cold mountain water.
Even the old gentleman , Uain , joined heart
ily In the gaiety Induced by this clear , cold
water from Ararat's melting snows.
"Our ascent for two and a half hours longer
was through a luxuriant vegetation of
flowers , grasses and weeds , which grew more
and more scanty as wo advanced. "
The night was spent In a Kurdish encamp
ment , which the writers describe with inter
esting detail. In the morning , when they re
sumed the Journey , the ascent became steeper
and more difficult , and they say they could
not but wonder how Noah ever managed
with the animals from the ark. At 7.GOO
feet they met the highest Kurdish encamp
ment on their line of ascent.
At 8,000 feet they struck the first snow
drift , and the donkeys had to be half carried
across. At 10 o'clock , at an altitude of 9,000
feet , lunch was eaten In a quiet mountain
glen , by the side of a rippling rill.
At this point the muleteers and the zap
tlehs gave up and would go no farther ; so
Messrs. Allen and Sachtleben and the old
Austrian took n small blanket , a felt mat ,
two long , stout ropes , enough food to last
two days , a bottle of cold tea , and a can of
Turkish rakl , and at half-past 2 o'clocK in
Mio afternoon started bravely out. Do thov
climbed over the rough rocks nnd the deep
snow unt'l nearly 6 o'cljck , when they had
reached a height of 11,000 feet.
"Here the thermometer registered 39 de
grees Fahrenheit and was constantly falling.
If we should continue on the cold during the
night , especially with our scanty clothing ,
wculd become intolerable ; and then , too , we
could scarcely find a spot level enough to
sleep on. We therefore determined to stop
here for the night and to continue the
ascent at dawn. Some high , rugged crags
on the ridge above us attracted our atten
tion as affording a comparatively protected
lodging. Among these we spread our
cat pot and piled stones In the Intervening
spaces to form a complete Inclosurc. Thus
busily engaged , we failed for a time to
realize the grandeur of the situation.
"Over the vast and misty panorama that
sprrud out before us the lingering rays of
the setting sun shed a tinge of gold , which
was communicated to the snowy beds arou.id
us. Behind the peak of Little Ararat a
brilliant rainbow stretched In one grand
archway above the weeping cloilds. Hut
this was only ono turn of nature's kaleido
scope. The arch soon faded away , and the
shadows lengthened and deepened across the
plain and mingled , till all was lost to view
Behind the falling curtains of the night.
The Kurdish tents far down the elope and
the white curling smoke from their evening
cump fires , wo could see no more ; only the
occasional bark of a dog was V ° rne upward
through the Impenetrable darkness.
"We turned In together under our single
blanket , with the old gentleman between us.
Ho had put on every article of clothing , In
cluding gloves , hat , hood , cloak and heavy
shoes. For pillows wo used the provision
bogs and camera. The bottle of cold tea
we buttoned up In our crats to prevent U
from freezing. On both sides and above us
ay the purs white snow ; below us a huge
ibyes. Into which the rocky rWBc descended
Ike a darkened stairway to the lower
regions. The awful stillness was unbroken ,
save by the whistling of the wind among
the rocks. Dark masses of clouds seemed
to bear down upon us every now and then ,
opening up their trap doora and letting down
a heavy fall of snow. The heat of our
bodies molted the Ice beneath us and our
clothes became saturated with Ice water.
Although wa wsre surrounded by snow anil
ce we were suffering with a burning thirst.
Since Beparatlng from our companions we
md found no water whatever , while the
single bottle of cold tea wo had must be
> rceerved for the morrow. Sleep under
luch circumstance * and in our cramped
Kfltlon was utterly Impossible. At J

"Just at daybreak , 3:65 : n. m. , on the Fourth
of July , we started off on what proved to be
tha hardest day's work wo had ever , accom
plished , We struck out at once across th- >
broad snow field to the second rock rib on
the right , which seemed to lead up to th
only line of rocks above. The surface of
thi-so large snow beds had frozen during
the night , so that we had to cut stops with
our Ice picks to keep from slipping down
tlielr glassy surface. Up Ihls ridge we
slowly climbed for three weary hours , leap
ing from boulder to boulder or dragging
ourselves up their precipitous sides.
'Wo pushed and pulled one another almost
to the top and then , with one more des
perate effort , we stood upon a vast and
gradually sloping snow bed. Down we
plunged above our kaeea through the yield-
Ing surface , and staggers , ! ami fill with

nent abutments , and separated by a snow
yaiicy , or deptrsMon , from fifty to 100 feet
In depth , "
"The eastern top , on which wo ' wcro
Handing , was quite extensive , ailtl thirty to
forty feet lower than Its western neighbor.
lion tops are hummocks on the hugo dome
of Ararat , like the humps on the back of n
camel , on neither ono of which Is there
a vestige of anything but snow.
"There remained Just us lltilo trace of
UK- crosses left '
by 1'nrrot and Chodzko , an
of the ark Itself.Ve remembered the plo-
turcs WP had been In our nursery books ,
which represented this mountain-top cov
ered wllh green grass , and Noah Stepping
out of the ark , In thi ; bright , warm suimhlno
before the receding waves , and now wo looked
around and saw this very spot covered with
perpetual snow. Nor did wo see any evi
dence whatever of n former existing crater ,
except perhaps the snow-niled depression
we have Just mentioned. There was nothing
about this perpetual snow field , and the
freezing atmosphere that was chilling us
to the bone , to remind us that we worn
on the lop of nn extinct Volcano that once
trembled with the convulsions of subter
ranean lu-at.
"The view from this lowering height was
Immeasurably extensive , and almost too
grand. All detail was lost all color , all
outline ; eveil the surrounding mountalmt
seemed to bo but .excrescent ridges of the
plain. Then , too , wo could catch only oc
casional glimpses , as the clouds shifted to
and fro. At ono time they opened up be
neath us , and revealed the Aras valley
with Its glittering ribbon of silver nt an
abyvsmal depth below. Now nnd then wo
could descry the black volcanic peaks of All
Chez , forty miles away to the northwest ,
nnd on the southwest the low mountains
that obscured the town of Dayazld. Of the
Caucasus , the mountains about Erzcrnm on
the west , and Lake Van on the south , nnd
even of the Caspian sea , all of which are
said to bo In Ararat's horizon , we could sco
absolutely nothing. ,
"We were suddenly aroused by the rum
bling of thunder below us. A storm was
rolling rapidly up the southeast slope of the
mountain. The atmosphere seemed to bo
boiling over the heated plain below. Higher
and higher came the clouds , rolling and
seething among the grim crags along jibe
chasm , and soon we were caught In JtB em
brace. The thermometer dropped at once
below freezing point , and the dense mists ,
driven against us by the hurricane , formed
Icicles on our blistered faces , and froze the
Ink In our fountain pens. Our summer clothIng -
Ing was wholly Inadequate for such on un
expected experience ; we were chilled to Iho
bone. To have remained where wo wcro
would have been jeopardizing our health. It
not our lives. Although wo could scarcely
see far enough ahead to follow back on the
track by which we had ascended , yet wo
were obliged to attempt It at once , for the
storm around us was Increasing every mo
ment ; we could even feel the charges of
electricity whenever we touched th Iron
points of our alpenstocks.
"Carefully peering through the clouds , wo
managed to fol'ow ' the trail wo had made
along the gradually sloping summit , to the
head of the great chasm , which nqw ap
peared more terrible than ever. We hero
saw that It would be extremely perilous ,
If not actually Impossible , to attempt' a iV-
descent on the rocks along its 4rc/iclerqs / ) ) )
edge In such a hurricane. The only'ajtor'n -
tlvo was to . take the precipitous snow-cov
ered slope. Planting our Ice hooks .deep fn
the snow behind us , we started. At.Qrst , | io
strong head wind , which on the ( op almost
took us off our feet , somewhat checked our
downward career , but It was not long be
fore we attained a velocity , that made' our
hair stand on end. H was a thrilling ex
perience ; wo seemed to bo sailing through
the air Itself , for the clouds obscured the
slope even twenty feet below. Finally 'Wo
emerged beneath them Into the glare of the
afternoon sunlight , but on we dashed for
G.OOO feet , leaning heavily on the trailing
stocks , which threw up an Icy spray In 'our '
wake. Wo never once stopped until wo
reached the bottom of the dome , at our last
night's camp among the rocks.
