FEATUREVAS / COVERING &Y SHORTS Corn \Vn I'lrin Wltlilii n Smnll Itsinge mid " " O t Were Sirong on Uufnvornble Crop New * .Slock ! and llondi. ClMPAfJO , May 28. Fears of crop dam age again nliled tile bulls In wheat today and July closed with a % c gain , Corn nnd oats closed % c higher and provisions scored a Might advance all around , There was only n moderate business In wheat , with price cliangcii limited to from 4c to Ic range. Tlie feature was covering by local shorts and the abfenco of the sel ling pressure which was so pronounced Saturday. The better tone was attributed to the frost rcare , report ! ) of bad weather abroad , stronger continental cables and bad crop news from the west. Private cables re ported a severe storm In Kugland , which had badly damaged crops , und many districts In northern Spain and southern France were Bald to be under snow. The decrease In the visible Mipply was not ns large as gen erally expected 715,000 bu. making the total quantity In sight 01,329,000 bu. , against 70,1551,000 bu , for the same time last year. Trices advanced with few re actions , and the close was at the top. Corn was firm within a range of from % c lo % c. Ueporls of crop damage , n decrcato In local stocks last week and a fair demand were the bull factors. The mar ket closed at the top. Oats were firm on favorable crop news , and helped by the strength In wheat nnd corn , prices advanced from ' ,4c. to % o and closed strong , at the top. Provisions opened weak on big live hog re ceipts , but firmed up later on scarce offer ings and the strength In the grain markets. The close was strong , with July pork Be , July lard 2'/jC and July rllu lOc higher. Freights were quiet at I''iC for corn and from ivjc to IViC for oata to Uuffalo , nud 2J4c for corn to Kingston. Week OpeiiutI In HpcurltioH wllli it Decrease In Illiniums. NEW YOUK , May 28. The week opened on the Stock exchange with a decrease In the volume of business and a generally dull , heavy tone to the speculation. The trailing was unimportant , as aHrule , and was largely monopolized by the room operators , who operated only In n small way. There was no specially controlling Influences In the market. A renewal , of the reports that the sugar schedule of the tariff bill as agreed on by the senate committee would finally be adopted failed to move the stock of the trust up 55 per cent In the early dealings , but "the higher range- lea the shorts to put out fresh lines , which led to a decline of 1 % per cent. Insiders came to the support of the shares at this point , with the result of a rally of 1S per cent. The Improvement was only temporary , and , under fresh selling a decline of 2 pep cent was effected. In the later dealings a recovery of 1 % per cent was made , of which 1 per cent was lost at the close , the last sale being at a flguro 1U per cent below Saturday's closing. Sugar preferred Is down % per cent. The grangers opened H to & per cent lower , and , on sell ing orders . .fromthe west- made further de clines. Qccaslonal rallies occurred , but the trend was dowtiward atfrt the final sales were at the lowest of the day , except for St. Paul , which Is U per cent above the . bottom figure , the net losses being : Hock Island and Burlington & Qulncy , each 1 per cent ; St. Paul , % per cent , and Northwest , U per cent. Atclilaon was sold by Iloston uid local traders In ti > belief ( hat the as- neiamenl to bo made under tlio reorganlxa lion will be heavier than has been proposed under the published plan. A decline of per cent on the day resulted , and consider able long stock was thrown on the market , which was taken surprisingly well. Mis souri Pacific maile a gain of * 4 per cent In the morning trading and then lost 1 per cent , closing at the lowest figures made , despite reports of. steadily Increasing net earning ! ) . The transactions In the rest of the list were unusually light , and only In the specialties were there any material fluc tuation * . The trading was very Irregular during the- afternoon and was generally heavy at the close. The railway and mis cdlnucoua bond list market was somewhat easier In tone during the morning , but gained i strength In the afternoon and closed I ' i The Evening Post says : Xo doubt the fact .that , two Important controversies that over the senate sugar tariff and that ovcr the bituminous I coal miners wages will -come % tea a : head this week , served to make the day's slock f market dull. Such active pressure as fi fI there I was against prices came chiefly from a i ctltiue of operators for the decline , who sold i on the professional basin of a market whoso scattered short Interest has been lately I "driven out. " Otherwise , the day's movement of prices was quite as meaningless as those of a few days since. The Evening Post's London cablegram say : Htislness In stocks today was con fined to arrangement of tlie account , which Is of moderate size. Money was plentiful Contagoes on American 2 to 3 per cent. Except for gllt-cdgcd stocks the tone was bullish. Consols were 101V4. the. highest record. Americans opened firm , but fell away and closed weak at the lowest prlco. A sharp rlso In Indian exchange put up rupee paper 1 per cent. The Indian council sold 23 lakha of specials up to 1 % pence. Argentine stocks were steady , although the gold premium there Is 324. The following arc the closing quotations on the leading stocks of the New York ex change today : The tolal sales of stock today were m.HW shares , Including : American Tobacco. 11,600 ; Xow Yorlt Slonoy AInrkPt. Cj jj\ MONDAY , May 28. Supplies of caty5cre ? rather light for a Monday , but the run of hcgs was the heavl cst for the first day of the week In nine months. Sheep receipt * were also liberal. The cattle market was very active at prices ranging from strong to lOc higher than Saturday. There was an active de mand from the dressed beef men and n good Inquiry for shipping and speculative account , as well as for export. Chicago was reported higher and , as the supply was limited , dealers lost no time In gcttjng down to business. The demand for good medium weight and heavy cattle was better than It has been for a long time , but good , fat , light cattle were quick sellers. Hough heavy cattle did not fore so well , and the light steers felt the depression In the feeder market. Prices were somewhat uneven , but the movement was brisk and trade was over before the middle of the forenoon. There were not a hundred head of cows In the yards , and as buyers all wanted them the meager supply goon vanished. Prices ruled a shade stronger than Saturday all around. Veal calves were also In active demand and firm. Heavy calves were rather neglected. Bulls , oxen and stags iold read ily at full strong prices. The trade In feeders was simply demoral ized. Supplies , both fresh and stale , were heavy and they coiild hardly be moved at any price. Even low prices fall to stimu late the country demand , as pastures are all dry. Prices ore nominally fully 50c lower than a week ago , but in many cases that would hardly cover the decline. Good to choice feeders arc quoted at $3.00@3.30 , fair to good at $2.7B3.00 , and the commoner grade * at from $2.05 down. nepicscntallve sales : DltCSSKD HEHF. No. Av. Pr. No. Av. 1'r. No. Av. That number was exceeded today , and with lower markets elsewhere sellers had to sub mit to a Do to lOc and In most cases a flat lOc decline. The demand was confined al most entirely to local packers , although shippers took nearly 800 hogs. One packer , who got left on filling his order , paid $4.57V6 and $4.60 for a few loads at the close , and a couple of loads of pigs went at $4.40. For fair to good hogs of all weights , however , Is was practically at $4.50 and $4.55 market , nearly everything going at those figure ! ) , as against $4.60 and $4.G5 Saturday and $4.65 on last Monday , It was rather a dull , drag ging market , but a very good clearance was finally effected.
