May 7 , compiled by Captain George K. Hunt ,

follows by the Nebraska weather bureau :
Except In the southwestern portion of the
state , where vegetation Is beginning to
suffer from lock of moisture , Nebraska has
experienced another week of excellent farm
ing weather. Wheat , oats nnd pastures
show Improvement , fruit prospects wcrj
never belter nnd all vegetation Is growing
vigorously. Corn planting Is well under way
In all sections of the state. The ground Is ,
with few exceptions , In excellent condition
for germinating the grain , nnd some corre
spondents report the plant already up nnd a
good stand. The temperature for the week
has been considerably above the normal ,
while the rainfall has been light nnd
scattered.

SOUTHEAST SECTION.
Duller County Farmers are well advanced
with plowing nnd planting for this season.
Hall did some damage to Holds and whipped
oft some fruit blossoms.
Clay County Fruit trees blossomed heav
ily. About one-fourth of an Inch of rain nn
the 2d , with some hall. Small grain looks
well , but grass shows signs of going back.
Chinch bugs getting bad. Drought Is Injur
ing .oats and wheat In vicinity of Harvard.
Flllmoro County Ilaln on 2d reached
greater portion of the county. Hall In the
vicinity of Geneva Injured fruit and garden ? .
The potato beetle has nude Us appearance
In great numbers and promises to be a great
pest this season. A great deal of early sown
oats will be plowed up and replanted to corn.
Gngo County Good rain on 2d and 3d.
Ground thoroughly soaked. All vegetation
doing well. Haln during week renders crop
prospects Ilrst class.
Hamilton County Past week dry with con
siderable wind , which has had a damaging
effect on oats. Some corn planted two weeks
ago Is up , but cut worms working badly
In It.
Jefferson County Ilnln of Sd beneficial to
all crops. Wheat crop looks well. Oats poor
stand. Corn coming up nicely.
Johnson County Week has been favorable
for corn planting and for Its speedy germi
nation. Probably 75 per cent of the corn
planted. Moro rain would benefit crops.
Wheat looks well and oats have gained In
appearance.
Lancaster County Good growing week.
Trees of nil kinds putting out foliage very
fast. Ilnln needed. Hyo beginning to head
out.
Nemaha County Crops growing slowly.
Ground needs soaking rain. Largo acreage
of corn has been put In during week.
Otoo County Ground in good condition for
corn planting. Haln needed for growing
crops.
Pawnee County The week has been favor
able for vegetation. Winter wheat nnd oats
look fairly well. Corn planting well ad
vanced. Wheat looks yellow in spots. Col
orado beetle already on potato tops. Cut
worms bad.
Polk County A good week for growing
crops. Early sown oats are thin , but
stcollng out nicely. Pastures and meadows
are looking well.
Hlchardson County Week favorable to all
crops. Corn one half planted. Some corn
up.
Thayer County Small grain making rapid
growth. Ground in good condition. Eaily
planted corn coming up well. Season two
weeks early.
Saline County Ground In excellent condi
tion , but rain becoming necessary ; wheat
and oats have made a fair growth ; corn
planting progressing rapidly ; fruit looks
finely , and a large crop of apples , cherries
and plums Is promised.
Saunders County A favorable week for
everything. Corn planting progressing rap-
Idly. Small grain nnd pastures looking fine.
Seward County Favorable week for grow
ing crops , n line light bhower having fallen ,
but ground Is becoming dry. Corn planting
Is being pushed. Some farmers have fin
ished.
Stanton County All crops In fine condition.
Corn planting well advanced.
York County Ground In good condition ,
Corn planting begun. More rain needed to
help plowing. Some farmers plowing up
their oats nnd putting In corn. Winter
wheat looks backward.
NORTHEAST SECTION.
Antelope County Light rainfall ; wheat ,
corn and oats.looking fine ; corn and potato
planting well advanced. Some wheat and
oats showing effect of March freeze. AVeok
generally favorable to all crops.
lioyd County Good growing weather.
Corn planting In full operation. Grass In
abundance for grazing.
Cedar County Crop prospects never bet
ter. All small grain doing finely. Fruit all
right and trees looking well.
Colfax County Ilcgnn planting corn.
Ground needs a good rain.
Cumins County Some corn planted.
Ground In the best possible condition. Oats
reported tl'ln. All other crops are two

Yesterday was n lively day In the building
inspector's office , and permits wcro granted
for Improvements aggregating over $30,000.
During the day a permit vas Issued to St.
Mary Magdalen's Catholic church for the
erection ot a handsome new edifice to re
place the one destroyed by the Hoston Store
fire. The new church will bo erected on the
old situ at 1011 Douglas street , at nn esti
mated cost of JS.OOO. The building uill be
36x81 feet In niea. The basement will be
used for various minor purposes and the re
mainder of the building will bo occupied by
the auditorium. The structure will bs built
of brick , witli n pressed brick front , and
stone trimmings.
The general plan of the Interior will be
similar to that of the old church. The choir
left \\I1I ba located at the Douglas street
end of the building nnd will bo twclvo feet
wide , extending the entire width of the
church. The other end of the auditorium
will ba occupied by the altar. Tim Interior
will bo lighted by four largo windows In
front and flvo on each aide. TI.e Interior
decorations have not been entirely decided
on , but will be of a nature to compars favor
ably with those of any church In the city.
Mr. Charles Offtitt will build a handsome
residence at the corner of Twenty-ninth ami
Davenport streets , The pinna are already
drawn and work will ba begun at once. The
material will ho brick , and the residence will

The members of tlio city council held nn
adjourned session In the council clmmbor
yesterday afternoon at a o'clock , with Mayor
Johnston In this clmlr and every inombor
present.
The room was well filled with spectators ,
the majority of them being men who are
Interested In having the council repeal the
ordinance levying nn occupation tax of $101) )
a year on saloon keepers. This ordinance
was rood for the Ilrst tlmo nnd referred.

Flro Chief Smith made .Ma animal report ,
It conveyed the Information Mint fifty-two
alarms hiivo been sent In during the last
year. The most extensive conflagration was
the burning of the Ltv , hotel on April 3 ,
when ono llfo was lost and the damage by
llro and water was conaldcniblu. The chief
estimates that the total loss by fires for the
year was $1 1,090 , and snys the greater portion
tion of this was covered by insurance. At
the present llmo the department consists of
only flvo men besides the superintendent ot
lire alarms , who has ninety-six bells of bat
teries to look after. Two men nro stationed
at No. 2 engine house at Thirty-first nnd 11
streets and two men and the chief at No. 1
engine house on Twenty-fourth street. Ho
reports that the houses nro In gooil slmpo.
They contain 2,100 feet of hoso. The city linn
elghty-flvo hydrants , which cost an annual
rental of $1,9:10. : The chief estimate.- ) that
the cost of running the department for the
next twelve months , with the number of men
now employed , exclusive of Urn hydrant rent ,
will bo $ G,000. Ho recommends that n light
truck be bought , with n fifty-five-foot exten
sion ladder , some shorter ones , poles , hooks ,
etc. llo says he will try nnd supply the bill-
lancci by donations. Ho states that If a
truck Is bought the department now has nn
extra horse which can bo used to draw It.
Ho also recommends that one more man ba
employed to drive the hook and ladder truck.
Another Idea the chlof suggests Is that n
volunteer company of four or lbo organ zed
and that the men bo paid for the actual serv
ices they give. The cxpsnso for running n
volunteer company ho figures would not cost
the city moro than $1,2UO a year.

The engineer reported that It would cost
? 7G to fill the hole at Twenty-fourth nnd Q
streets. Referred.
An ordinance was Introduced to grade Q
street from Seventeenth to Twenty-second.
Tom Hock was granted permission to prac
tically operate his saloon on the sidewalk or
street while ho builds n two-story brick on
his present site.
Chief Hrcnnan reported that there was con
siderable city property In the shape of tools
missing. The committee on buildings nnd
property will look the matter up.
John Hush asked that the city wnter works
be extended out to his largo building , which
Is now occupied as the Homo of the flood
Shepherd. Referred.
The chief of police was Instructed to sea
that a substantial sidewalk was laid In front
of the Dslmonlco hotel property.
Police Judge Chrlstman reported that 85
arrests had been made In April and that
Jfi5.no had been collected In lines.
Ilefore adjourning Mayor Johnston took
occasion to reprimand members who had
been absent from n regular meeting and
urged that each councilman attend every
meeting nnd that he come early nnd stay
late. The meeting adjourned till Monday
night nt 7:30 : o'clock.
Motions and amendments which amounted
to nothing but wind were made for two
hours nt n meeting of the Taxpayers league
In the council chamber last night. At 10
o'clock the members agreed to quit making
silly motions nnd the citizens who had paid
In $1 Initiation fee proceeded to roast each
other. Mr. Doud moved that the resolution
adopted by the executive committee In re
gard to determining the class of the city bo
adopted for the purpose of discussion. Ho
also moved that the report In regard to tha
city engineer ba not adopted. Mayor John
ston gave Information to the satisfaction ot
nil that Engineer ttcal was a citizen , a voter ,
a taxpayer and n competent engineer , and
the report was voted on. Anderson claimed
the motion was lost , but the chair wns In
doubt , the roll was called nnd the motion
carried by ono majority.
Pat llowley rung In a motion that tha
chief of police bo sent out for a basket ot
marbles , nnd Postmaster Glasgow wanted to
know the difference between tweedledco and
tweedledum.
Attorney Lane offered a resolution "that
the league recommend the city council not
to poform any act beyond the powers of a
city cf the second class , and If thu city coun
cil does perform any act contrary to law or
beyond the powers ) of a city of the second
class that the executive committee bo In
structed to take suitable action to prevent
such acts. "
Mr. Towlo took the floor long enough to
resign ns a member of the executive board
and offered his stock for sale dirt cheap.
Dave Anderson was about to buy. when Mr.
Doud got the floor and wanted to know
about how much cash the league had on
hand to test the law on the class the city
belonged to. Mr. Hunt said there was $20
In his bank and Pat llowley said that would
be enough. Mr. Towle's resignation was
then accepted. Pat llowley made n motion
to adjourn. It was voted down , but a num
ber left the room.
The resolution passed by the executive
committee licensing the present adminis
tration of extravagance , raising salaries , etc , ,
and recommending that the league enjoin tha
payment of nil salaries to officers In order to
have the courts pass upon the class ot the
city , was then read. When Secretary O'Neill
began to read the minutes of n mooting ot
the directors held on April 25 Mayor John
ston stopped him and made n motion that the
minutes not only bo not read , but bo stricken
from the books , from the fact that there was
not a quorum present at the time. Mr.
Johnston claimed that outsiders wore called
In and that only nine members of the board
wcro present. Dave Anderson took the
floor and gave It out cold that Mr. Johnston
might bo able to run the cl'y council and
certain citizens of South Omaha , but that
ho could not run the Taxpayers league.
Mr. O'Neill moved , as an amendment , that
the minutes bo read for the Information of
the meinbera. Mr. Mon'Komary considered
Mr. Johnston's motion out of order. Mr.
O'Neill's nmundmcnt carried and the min
utes \\erc read. Pat Rowley took occasion
to remark that ho cnuld not aeo what the-
Taxpayers league had to do with the burning
of the Leo hotel. Mr. Lane said the league
had no right to expunge the record * glvlni ;
